So the DUP is demanding TM “rein Hammond in”.
Wondered how long it would be before the tail started wagging the dog hmm

Yet another crack in the government glass. Phillip Hammond is doing his best in an impossible situation and I think TM may be. As to why the DUP are acting is this way it is a mystery. Of all the parts of the UK affected by Brexit Northern Ireland has the most untenable situation.

When will TM realize that public opinion, which was never really pro Brexit, is now very much against Brexit. The current "Will of the People" as opposed to the will of the Right Wing Faction of her own party has to be considered and respected.

I often talk to total strangers and when I mention Brexit almost everyone thinks that it is high time we called time on the whole process and accepted that we are part of Europe. What will it take to get the message through?

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 06:48:34

Couldn't agree more Cindersdad.

Interesting that the likes of the Daily Crap Mail haven't picked up on 'Grannies Brexit Revolt.'

MaizieD Sun 15-Oct-17 07:28:54

So who is pulling the DUP's strings?
Are they after destroying the GFA?

What is this 'Grannies' Brexit Revolt' Imperfect? Wishful thinking?

loopyloo Sun 15-Oct-17 07:55:35

Never really pro Brexit? Who are you to say that ? We had a referendum on the subject.
Of course we are part of Europe, but that doesn't mean our government should be in Brussels.

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 08:42:46

Maizie - just fantasising about a constructed headline as - unless I have badly misread the political heartbeat of GN - many seem to nurse 'Remain' sentiments here. And as our posts can be 'borrowed' by the national press, I thought someone might want to put a new 'Granny Spin' on things. grin

MaizieD Sun 15-Oct-17 08:58:57

'sigh!'

Our government isn't in Brussels, 'loopyloo'. It never has been and never will be. I don't think you have bothered to inform yourself on the meaning of 'federal', the principle of 'subsidarity' or what the EU actually legislates on. Parrotting the slogans made up by the Leave campaign doesn't impress.

Imperfect I suspect (sadly) that you've indeed misread the political heartbeat of GN. GN took a poll just before the ref which resulted in quite a majority for Leave. I doubt if it would be any different now. We Remainers are a wee enclave clinging together for comfort, I fear grin

It is odd.

We must remember that the brextremists are gunning for Hammond and this of course includes the Telegraph. Fail and Express. All with owners that are never held tobaccountvforvtheir extremist views.

So the Telegraph is busy trying to undermine the Remainers in parliament of which there is a majority, as I have no doubt is true in the country at large.

Lots of amendments being put down -Repeal Bill. Looks very hopeful that we are stopping the insanity of a cliff edge as with luck and a good wind it will be decreed that parliament will have a vote on the final outcome. Democracy at last.

whitewave Sun 15-Oct-17 09:15:01

Never held to account for their!!

My iPad is weird

Cindersdad Sun 15-Oct-17 09:54:13

To quote "loopyloo"
^Never really pro Brexit? Who are you to say that ? We had a referendum on the subject.
Of course we are part of Europe, but that doesn't mean our government should be in Brussels.^

The referendum as we all know was toxic due to lies on both sides but mainly a couple of big ones told by the LEAVE campaign "The £350 million a week for the NHS" and the question of immigration. I can offer no excuses for the young not being bothered to vote but they jumped into life after the result before which everyone expected REMAIN would have won.

The General Election earlier this year gave a huge anti Brexit jolt which should not be ignored. If LEAVERS are so confident in the will of the people why can't they accept that in the interests of democracy a second referendum is essential before the final line is crossed. The majority on MP's themselves voted REMAIN and presumably still feel that way.

Leaving the EU will damage our economy for years to come by which time many of the older leave voters will have passed on.

True the UK Government needs to stand up to Brussels when necessary as do others of the 27. A Federal Europe is not likely simply because of cultural differences. We need to have a say in Europe and to have that say stay in. The very existence of the EU has prevented armed conflict in Europe for the last 70 years.

Luckygirl Sun 15-Oct-17 10:14:30

It is sinister that the predicted manipulation by those who have it by the short and curlies is surfacing. This is not democracy.

whitewave Sun 15-Oct-17 10:22:00

MN

12 anti-Brexit rallies throughout the UK yesterday.

No coverage by BBCangry

MaizieD Sun 15-Oct-17 11:53:30

A Federal Europe is not likely simply because of cultural differences.

Indeed, Cindersdad. When we talked about federalism last week, here:

Mamie had this to say:

I always thing it is interesting that anyone who knows France and the French would think for one minute that they would accept a lessening of their status as a nation to be swept up into the "European superstate" notion.
The idea of "patrimoine" is so strong here and the French are, in my opinion, much more patriotic in their daily lives than the British. Although it is slowly changing, most still drive French cars; for an overwhelming majority French cuisine is the only possible way of cooking, French wine the best in the world etc etc.

I'd add to that that I doubt if the Spanish, the Italians, the Portugese, who have all in the past fought to make, or keep, their countries sovereign would be particularly interested in a federal state of Europe. And I wonder what the EU countries that were formerly part of the USSR would think of the idea?

durhamjen Sun 15-Oct-17 12:12:01

Talking about sacking Hammond is a way of forgetting that last week everyone wanted to sack Boris.
I wonder what would happen if she sacked both?

MaizieD Sun 15-Oct-17 13:27:57

grin

In between the scary bits (like the prospect of a 'no deal' Brexit) this last year has turned out to be quite entertaining, hasn't it dj?

What about if May were to sack Hammond and Boris and then resign...

'What larks, eh' ?

durhamjen Sun 15-Oct-17 14:48:40

But she said she wasn't a quitter.
When's that u-turn going to happen?
Should we have a book on it?
Isn't it Tegan who likes to bet?

Deedaa Sun 15-Oct-17 14:49:21

I think that's why the Tories lost so many seats in the election MaizieD they didn't realise how many of us would vote against them just to stir things up!

lemongrove Sun 15-Oct-17 15:59:00

I wonder at what point the Remoaners will accept that leaving the EU is a fact of life?Next year, never?
It really is wishful thinking , demos against Brexit mean nothing, if a demo can change a democratic referendum or election then no point having democracy.
I don’t know a single person who has changed their mind since 2016.
You would think that you were all facing the firing squad,
Life will go on.

durhamjen Sun 15-Oct-17 18:43:12

Not just flexing their muscle about Hammond, but about WASPI as well.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/conservative-tories-dup-labour-women-pensions-waspi-cash-for-votes-deal-manifesto-coalition-a7999251.html

trisher Sun 15-Oct-17 18:57:47

If Boris, Hammond and May go who will lead the Tories? Not Mr Gove surely! Even they can't be that daft

LadyGracie Sun 15-Oct-17 19:00:12

I voted for Brexit and I haven’t changed my mind!

BlueBelle Sun 15-Oct-17 19:21:34

I voted to REMAIN and will never change my mind
What a total cock up talk about do the okie cokie put your whole self in your whole self out in out in out and shake it all about

BlueBelle Sun 15-Oct-17 19:24:09

By the way democracy can’t be built on lies Nothing democratic about the whole kaboosh The question wasn’t even fair to start with and many voted to leave on the strength of the NHS bus message, very very undemocratic
