Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

Well, I'm a member of the 'British public', Day6 and they're not 'betraying' me.

Ilovecheese Sun 25-Feb-18 14:15:17

Nor me

lemongrove Sun 25-Feb-18 14:20:56

It says everything I need to know about the present Labour Party Day6 !
However nothing is sorted as yet, and Labour change their position from day to day depending on which MP is talking.

mostlyharmless Sun 25-Feb-18 14:22:23

Nor me!
The words “Customs union” were not on the Referendum ballot paper.

mostlyharmless Sun 25-Feb-18 14:31:04

So how is it betraying the British public?

Leaving the EU could have many meanings. The Brexiteer politicians said before the Referendum that it would not mean leaving the Single Market or the Customs Union.

Labour MP Kate Hoey

"When you think about how long the EU has taken to get trade deals - and they still haven’t got them - with China, India, America.

For us to be saying, we’re half in, we’re half-out makes no sense. That would still give the EU control, very simply.

"If you are looking long-term, our trade is going down with the EU every year.

"Even the European Commission have said that 90% of the growth worldwide is outside the EU.

This is a great opportunity, we can make a huge benefit of leaving. If we only half-leave, half-out, it’s not leaving.

"There is a good left-wing argument for leaving - the EU does not care about democracy."

The only way the British public will be betrayed is to continue with the lunacy of a hard Brexit. If that disaster happens then the great British public will be really betrayed, as they see their stNdard of living already falling, fall even further, with less government revenue for all the services the brexit voter so very much depends on.

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 14:35:42

A hard brexiter is Hoey. Willing to forgo all for the sake of a warped ideology

Day6 Sun 25-Feb-18 14:36:02

I think many Remoaners think they won the Brexit vote.

The UK voted to leave the EU (whether you approve or not) and the PM has a mandate from the people, to leave.

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 14:41:06

But the question you are not addressing is what sort of Brexit.

This is what the argument is about. In you apparent anger you failed to see that.

If you want a hard Brexit all well and good, but if you consider that a softer Brexit would, be better for our economy and jobs, give more revenue to the government to provide the people with the services they need, prevent a disaster in NI, help retain the union and much more. Then you should not be cross you should be thankful that common sense is prevailing.

mostlyharmless Sun 25-Feb-18 14:41:07

Doesn’t mean we can’t stay in the Customs Union though - if it is a way of maintaining trade links with EU and keeping peace in Ireland.
The Conservatives realise we might need a Customs Union anyway.

Day6 Sun 25-Feb-18 14:41:08

Labour MP Keir Starmer, a Remainer has already admitted that the Labour desire for a customs union withthe EU would mean agreeing terms with Brussels regarding how we trade. Brussels would be negotiators.

Remaining in an EU, Brussels-led customs union means we do not leave the EU.

MaizieD Sun 25-Feb-18 14:43:43

And you're prepared to throw NI to the wolves, Day6?

I'm sure you must remember 'the troubles'?

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 14:44:01

So do you support a hard Brexit? Only I thought you were a champion of the working class?

mostlyharmless Sun 25-Feb-18 14:44:03

We will have to agree trade terms with EU anyway. No getting round that Day6.

lemongrove Sun 25-Feb-18 14:45:32

‘ a warped ideology’ ? A Labour one perhaps, even Corbyn backs leaving the EU.IMHO he has had to listen to others and go against his instincts on this.
The PM voted to remain, but to her credit is doing what the majority voted for which is Leaving.

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 14:47:27

What sort of leave?

mostlyharmless Sun 25-Feb-18 14:49:51

So what exact deal would you like to see lemongrove and Day6?
And how would you resolve the Irish border issue?

maryeliza54 Sun 25-Feb-18 14:53:41

And what about the rebel Tory MPs betraying the British public? I thought we had a Tory Government and that Labour had lost the last election - but then what do I know?

lemongrove Sun 25-Feb-18 14:54:31

It has to be the sort of Leave that doesn’t hedge us around with so many EU restrictions that we can’t fight our way out.
I remain optimistic that negotiations will go well in the end,
Simply because both sides need it to.
However, I do think that MP’s themselves will be the ones causing problems and harming the UK, rather than the EU
Negotiators.

Day6 Sun 25-Feb-18 14:55:23

I love the way Remainers have absolutely no faith in the UK economy to survive without Brussels and the EU.

You can imagine these people having to ride a bike with stabilisers on it for the rest of their lives, or still swimming with a rubber ring and armbands as adults even though they've passed all their proficiency tests.

There are risks to leaving, of course there are but with member states in turmoil and unrest in many major cities of Europe as well as the rise of far right nationalist parties on the continent, I'd say there is a huge risk in clinging to the sinking EU ship.

As MP Kate Hoey says "Even the European Commission have said that 90% of the growth worldwide is outside the EU."

lemongrove Sun 25-Feb-18 14:57:24

Exactly! Well said.?

Day6 Sun 25-Feb-18 15:02:16

So what exact deal would you like to see lemongrove and Day6?
And how would you resolve the Irish border issue?

Ha ha ha. You tell us Maryeliza?

It's the lefty tactic of needing anyone who opposes them to write an essay giving their reasons why. grin Just like they wanted the electorate to explain how and why they'd voted in the referendum - and proving they'd been educated to degree level - before having their ballot slip accepted. grin

It won't wash anymore.

We were all aware that getting out of the EU would throw up a myriad of problems and questions. MPs, paid a darn sight more then I'll ever earn have been charged with sitting in on these meetings. They have to consider all the options, don't they? Given that Irish border issue has yet to be resolved, why pretend YOU, a Remainer, knows there is a definitive answer?

Your 'tell us' tactics just don't work any more. hmm

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 15:03:03

So from your remarks day6 you are keen for a hard Brexit- well good luck with that one.

From your remarks lemon you are optimistic that something will happen confused grin
