Head of Commonwealth

The leaders of the commonwealth countries are meeting this week in London.

They will choose who will be the next Head after the queen dies.

The queen made a speech this morning and said she hopes her son will follow what her father started .

Corbyn has said it should be each leader in turn and not Charles.

The argument against is - if not Charles, the head of the commonwealth will be a politician

Bridgeit Thu 19-Apr-18 11:41:32

I think I would prefer Charles, not too keen on a politician taking on this role. Anyway I’m sure they have enough to do already?

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 12:10:04

The PM of New Zealand was interviewed , she said she is a republican but does want the head to be Charles, there are enough of disgreements voting for a chair person every two years.

A young girl, sorry missed which country , said their country get lots of support from the Queens family .

I agree with Bridgeit on this.
Much better to have a Head with no political axe to grind.

kittylester Thu 19-Apr-18 12:27:35

I agree we should have someone with no political axe to grind but I don't have much faith in Charles not interfering in some way.

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 12:37:51

How can Charles interfere? He has no power over these countries

nigglynellie Thu 19-Apr-18 12:56:09

I agree that it should be Charles. Someone politically non biased, and who will do the job with the same dedication as his mother and Grandfather. As King, he won't be able to interfere with anything even remotely political in the unlikely event that he would want to. The thought of electing someone to every two years would immediately make it political and just something else to quarrel about!

RosieLeah Thu 19-Apr-18 13:07:37

Prince Charles is the right and obvious choice.

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 13:12:01

And would leaders of large countries give equal attention to small countries. The queens family visit large and small countries. William recently been to Canada , Charles
India, Harry Africa , when at the commonwealth games Charles visited a small country, I can't recall the name.

Anyone watch the Queenie and Attenborough programme this week? Queenie has set up 'The Queens Canopy' forests in most of the commonwealth countries were offered as part of the scheme , they haven't given them away just want them included in the Canopy.

Mmmm. All of the Commonwealth countries would need to agree that the next Head should be another member of the British Royal family. The Commonwealth is certainly important to the Queen and she has dedicated a great deal of time and effort to keeping it together as a legacy to her father, I think. Times change and opinions too. I don’t think we can assume that Charles will be an option. Like some families, when the matriarch dies the individuals go their own way. It will be interesting to see what happens when the time comes. It might be continuity and it might not.

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 14:17:07

It isn't assumed, the leaders will decide , Charles will be on the list.

nigglynellie Thu 19-Apr-18 15:59:15

Exactly annie!

Newquay Thu 19-Apr-18 18:06:09

Surely there should be a democratic election by secret ballot?

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 18:32:37

There will be an election, there is one every two years for the position of chair. I agree with the view that if a leader of one of the countries are elected it will bring politics into the position of head of the commonwealth

BlueBelle Thu 19-Apr-18 18:54:20

Definitely should be Charles, he’s a good chap

Iam64 Thu 19-Apr-18 19:39:08

The Queen has let it be known she would like Charles to become Head of the Commonwealth. I can't imagine an expressed wish from a Queen who has demonstrated her love and support for the commonwealth so often, being ignored.

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 19:46:06

By the queen speaking out about the line of continuity it may silence the demands to by pass Charles for the crown, silence some.

I hope Charles is elected head of the commonwealth when the time comes for a new head.

maryeliza54 Thu 19-Apr-18 19:46:39

Charles has no political axe to grind <faints>

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 19:48:05

Nausea and fainting, oooh a pregnancy perhaps ?

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Apr-18 19:50:39

when at the commonwealth games Charles visited a small country, I can't recall the name.
It was Vanuatu I think, Anniebach; a certain tribe in Vanuatu reveres Prince Philip and he has strong links with them so they could have been a bit disappointed that it was Charles, not Philip, who was visiting.

We went there shortly after the cyclone of 2015 and there were appeals for help then, which may not have been publicised here, although Australians sent immediate aid. I think Charles paid a flying visit to see how they were recovering from this cyclone.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Apr-18 19:53:09

I think it should be Charles who will be Head of the Commonwealth - this is not a political appointment and he will have no political preferences there no political axe to grind. He will also be very concerned about the smaller nations, particularly island nations which could be affected by rising sea levels.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Apr-18 19:53:35

'therefore'

Anniebach Thu 19-Apr-18 20:04:32

Thank you Jalima,

Joelsnan Thu 19-Apr-18 20:13:04

As a devout environment advocate Charles would be a good choice to continue championing incentives started by the Royal family. The Queens Commonwealth Canopy is just such an incentive that needs supporting and encouraging. An A-political head is the right person for this job.
