Anyone else outraged that this bill which was to make taking photographs up a woman’s skirt illegal was blocked by one old Tory MP. He also blocked a bill which would have made it a crime to attack a police dog.

Iam64 Fri 15-Jun-18 18:45:45

I’m off to google who this man is (?)

paddyann Fri 15-Jun-18 18:50:32

thats the tories for you, vile people .

Iam64 Fri 15-Jun-18 18:54:08

Oh for pity’s sake paddynan. This is a serious subject. I find it hard to believe every Tory MP will be dancing in the aisles bin support of whoever this man is

Oldwoman70 Fri 15-Jun-18 18:55:13

This bill was backed by all parties, including Tories. As a Conservative voter myself I am disgusted that just one man could stop this bill. I think every woman in his constituency should now lobby for him to be de-selected. I wonder what made him object. As someone said - perhaps the photos on his phone should be checked.

Ilovecheese Fri 15-Jun-18 18:57:45

He seems to be giving some sort of excuse that it was all too quick and easy.
As if this is a complicated issue!

varian Fri 15-Jun-18 19:00:40

I agree with Paddyann.

Wera Hobhouse, the LIbDem MP who promoted this legislation had done a great deal of cross party negotiation and had the support of the Government, including the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry for Equality.

The Scottish Parliament have already enacted this legislation. More than 95% of the public are in favour, yet this one Tory MP Christopher Choke, can prevent it being enacted. I wonder why?

muffinthemoo Fri 15-Jun-18 19:02:16

The police animals bill has the support of the relevant Sec of State (Gove) so it was completely uncontroversial.

This fandango is completely unnecessary.

I find it hard to believe that the overwhelming majority of folk think upskirting is acceptable behaviour.

I’m not sure what his actions are intended to achieve.

M0nica Fri 15-Jun-18 19:07:55

An interesting article on his activities here. I think he is one of those old reactionaries who thinks that everything should go all his way every time and enjoys throwing spanners into works, regardless of the damage they do.

Just demonstrates how much the House needs to be modernised.

maryeliza54 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:20:09

Knighted via TM only six months ago. For what? What I’d really like to happen now is for him to be de-bagged tonight and photos of his genitalia to be uploaded to Twitter. My guess is that the majority of Tory MPs will be extremely irritated by this.

Squiffy Fri 15-Jun-18 19:22:53

OldWoman70 perhaps the photos on his phone should be checked

That was the first thing that occurred to me! Why on earth would anyone want to stop this Bill?

maryeliza54 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:24:18

Irritated by the objection - not the debagging, they’d probably enjoy that

maryeliza54 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:25:41

Because he’s just an utter p***k who cares nothing for democracy and is an attention seeking little rat. He has much form which is why I don’t get why he was knighted.

varian Fri 15-Jun-18 19:31:40

muffinthemooe the vast majority if folk, more than 95% think this behavour is unacceptable.

Iam64 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:39:47

Thanks for the lovely no MOnica.
Maryeliza, i share your query about why TM decided he qualified to be knighted. Why, given his previous filibustering. Alan Turing - I despair.
Mind you, why were Jeremy Thorpe and Cyril Smith knighted. Allegations about their crimes were well known and well hidden by Mi5 and other agencies. It’s a mystery!

varian Fri 15-Jun-18 19:45:46

I don't think Jeremy Thorpe was ever knighted.

gangy5 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:47:51

Do you really think there is time to discuss a bill of this sort when there is much more important stuff to be considered? Personally, I have been watching two Bills currently going through the House of Commons with regard to peoples work status. I am hoping this will do away with bogus self employment - an injustice affecting many workers. The 2nd reading of these bills was supposed to take place in April but because there was so much business to be dealt with, this now will not happen till November !!

Iam64 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:48:19

Whoops - my mistake. JT was though feted within his party

dbDB77 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:59:25

I think Telly is spot on - 95% of the public and all political parties wanted this Bill passed - so there is something wrong with a system that allows one person to say "I object" and the Bill is lost. System needs to be changed.

varian Fri 15-Jun-18 19:59:57

I met Jeremy Thorpe when he was party leader in the 1970s. He came to a social event in our little town to meet the Liberal supporters. He had been to our town some years before and had met some of the party faithfull.

He recognised a formidable older lady whose name was Miss Gass and strode across the room with his hand outstended and said "how delightful to meet you again, Miss Bagg"

maryeliza54 Fri 15-Jun-18 20:01:17

gangy. You’re switching the argument. The Govt had agreed to give it time, they had decided it was worth it. It’s completely wrong for him to do what he did - Scotland did it 10 years ago - our girls and women deserve the same

muffinthemoo Fri 15-Jun-18 20:03:58

varian exactly, so who exactly is he representing here? The perverts of England and Wales? (Scottish legislation already done) This is hardly a controversial measure. It’s also weird as whatever to choose sexual offending and maiming police dogs as your hills to die on if this is a matter of principle....

Although I had forgotten his carry on over Alan Turing. Funny principles, these

Baggs Fri 15-Jun-18 20:04:34

Someone one Twitter said something about taking pictures of women's genitals. Um... perhaps I am being dense or naive or something, but don't women who wear skirts wear knickers as well nowadays?

muffinthemoo Fri 15-Jun-18 20:05:59

It’s not the fashion of the lingerie the perverts are “admiring”...
