Trade after Brexit

Well, it appears that we have clinched a trade deal with the Faroe Isles. Good stuff

Unfortunately Japan isn't too keen to trade with us on the terms we've been used to:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/08/japan-seeking-big-concessions-from-britain-in-trade-talks-eu-brexit

The USA has a huge list of things they want before they'll agree a trade deal with us. Things like lowering our food standards:

And Australia thinks that a deal with the EU is a priority:

Looking good?

MaizieD Sun 10-Feb-19 08:50:56

It's all going to be fine.

Surprised no-one has any concerns as Britain slides beneath the waves...

EllanVannin Sun 10-Feb-19 08:55:02

It's all as clear as mud at the moment with nothing set in stone.

This from twitter. this guy does his research:

Some people in the US have said they don’t understand the trade benefit of Brexit, so I thought I’d explain it.

or, easier reading, maybe, the thread 'unrolled'

I'm afraid it's a long read to concentrate on, not soundbites

Talking about the environment, is that the Faroe Islands that murder in cold blood, with knives, 10s of 1000s of dolphins every year?

Telly Mon 11-Feb-19 17:08:04

jura2 yes, the same Faroes. Personally I think we should ban all trade with them.

petra Mon 11-Feb-19 17:09:18

is that the Faroe Islands that murder in cold blood with knives
Just the same as the Japanese who the eu have just signed a trade deal with.

petra Mon 11-Feb-19 17:10:54

So the eu should stop trade with Japan hmm

Nonnie Mon 11-Feb-19 17:27:16

Why don't we ban all trade with countries we don't agree with? If they don't do things the way we do them, let's have nothing to do with them.

Telly Mon 11-Feb-19 17:47:44

The economy is unraveling before our eyes. It's like watching a slow motion car crash.
Nonnie - I do think that we should not trade with people who act in ways that in this country we consider to be unethical or morally wrong. Otherwise we are just as bad. Surely someone needs to stand up for something they believe in??

Nonnie Mon 11-Feb-19 17:57:07

Fine Telly but how many countries will be left? Where should the line be drawn?

jura2 Mon 11-Feb-19 18:06:44

Saudi Arabia comes to mind sad

jura2 Mon 11-Feb-19 18:07:13

well, the EU was a very good start

jura2 Mon 11-Feb-19 18:08:26

I'll trade a few 'petty rules' that no one can come up with btw - to wars, FGM, dolphins, whales and a lot worse.

petra Mon 11-Feb-19 18:13:25

Telly
I assume you abhor bull fighting?
Do you buy any fresh produce from Spain? I'm hoping the answer is no.

petra Mon 11-Feb-19 18:33:36

jura2
So your more than happy to see 10s of 1,000s of jobs to go at BAE systems?
And then the Saudis will just go somewhere else, France? to get their fighter jets.

jura2 Mon 11-Feb-19 20:20:05

so you are prepared to see 10s of 1000s of jobs go because of Brexit- but are prepared to see us continue to sell arms that murder innocents all over the world?

I know which jobs I'd choose, for sure.

petra Mon 11-Feb-19 22:49:04

Jura2
Let's wait and see what happens to your mystic meg predictions Re the job losses.
What is a definite is that if we don't sell Saudi jets, arms, technology etc. 10s of 1000s of jobs will be lost

crystaltipps Tue 12-Feb-19 09:35:44

We don’t send bulls to Spain to be slaughtered in the bull ring do we? Must have missed something. Poor analogy. I don’t think selling weapons to a country which uses them to kill men, women and children is quite the same as disapproving of a cruel practice which is present in a particular country. I don’t approve of fois gras, whale hunting, battery hens etc either.

Trade after Brexit

I have seen several posts over the last few months objecting to the fact that we "might" import chlorinated chicken from the USA.

I wonder if you know that all the bags of prepared salad, spinach, vegetables that come in from Spain is chlorinated.

jura2 Tue 12-Feb-19 16:15:27

you do realise chickens are different to salads, don't you? But I never buy bags of salads these days, and when I did, I washed them thoroughly.

petra Tue 12-Feb-19 17:06:03

I don't buy the stuff so I'm not worried.
But I'm pleased that it is chlorinated as the threat to our public health would be serious.
The sanitation conditions in those tunnels is 'not nice'?‍♀️

GrannyGravy13 Tue 12-Feb-19 17:33:12

Petra I try to avoid Spanish produce, because of the "plastic village".

However in Spain I do but all the misshaped vegetables/salad from the local producers, might look odd but tastes fantastic.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 12-Feb-19 17:33:48

Oops should read "buy" not but!!!

Jalima1108 Tue 12-Feb-19 17:59:52

And Australia thinks that a deal with the EU is a priority:
Is that the official position of the Australian government?
If so, they have changed their minds.
