Politicians and Fashion

When watching the scene in Parliament yesterday, I couldn't help noticing the dress of the lady MPs who have broken away from the Tory party, Anna Soubry in particular. I know that there is a fashion for short jackets at the moment, but mature ladies need to keep their hip area under cover. A short jacket with a skirt looks very elegant....with tight trousers, not so. It would seem that these ladies want to appear terribly up-to-date, wearing the latest fashion, without regard to whether it suits them or not. Does this reflect their general character...people who 'go with the flow' instead of thinking for themselves? Sheep in other words. I would have more faith in someone who knows what suits her, and is concerned about how she looks rather than following the latest fad.

I should have put...'while watching'..bad english!

Anniebach Thu 21-Feb-19 09:56:43

Can it not be that Anna Soubry thinks what she wears suits her ?

Luciana Berger wore a lovely maternity dress not a dress stretched over her tummy with navel sticking out, this isn’t going with the flow

MawBroon Thu 21-Feb-19 09:57:11

I think wha professional women choose to wear is arely what you might call “latest fashion”
As it happens I thought they all looked great- good colours, smart business dress. hmm

MawBroon Thu 21-Feb-19 09:59:09

PS why should “mature ladies need to keep their hip area under cover”?
We all have hips and they were not “uncovered blush
Do you say the same about men?
Some women can be their own worst enemies.

MawBroon Thu 21-Feb-19 10:00:21

Some missing consonants in my first post!
“What” and “rarely”

kittylester Thu 21-Feb-19 10:01:29

Quite maw!

Anna Soubry always looks good imo.

I like the fact that the Tory leavers all wore blue.

TerriBull Thu 21-Feb-19 10:10:29

I don't care what they wear, only what comes out of their mouths. Although some might say Jezza really knows how to rock the "anorak" That's pretentious fashion talk, to indicate he wears it with panache! Of course an anorak is ideal if you are going to get down and dirty. At the allotment of course, not metaphorically grin

Anniebach Thu 21-Feb-19 10:13:42

Terri. ?

MacCavity2 Thu 21-Feb-19 10:23:40

Oh dear, surly policies are more important and standing up for what you believe in. Thought JC is looking particularly dapper, cleaned up his act to go to Brussels. He obviously thinks he has a cat in hell chance.

annodomini Thu 21-Feb-19 10:23:41

Does it matter what the women defectors wear? Are the men's outfits under discussion?

annodomini Thu 21-Feb-19 10:24:36

Crossover, MacCavity!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 21-Feb-19 10:39:29

They can turn up in a plastic bin bag tied up with bale strings for all care.
I judge them on their actions and politics as I do the men.

kittylester Thu 21-Feb-19 11:41:34

Whilst, obviously, what politicians do and say is the most important thing, does no one else think how they look has a bearing on how they are perceived?

I wouldn't have a lot of faith in someone who was unkempt as I think that would show a lack of awareness of how the world operates nowadays.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 21-Feb-19 12:16:54

Kittylester you are of course correct we are all judged on how we present ourselves to the outside world.

Just that I think at this moment in political time we should be more concerned in MPs actions and accomplishments than the length of women’s jackets.

EllanVannin Thu 21-Feb-19 12:54:25

I'm not a fan of short jackets but I notice TM is and they don't suit her at all ! Nor do her " ankle-grazer " trousers. Yes she's tall and slim but not the right shape for either I'm afraid.
Longer skirts too wouldn't go amiss to shorten her " not so good " legs as they would look more dressy. She's no chicken to be wearing above the knee skirts anyway. Okay if you've got a decent pair of pins I suppose but not in her case.
What she wears must cost a fortune so she may as well get it right.

KatyK Thu 21-Feb-19 12:59:43

I'm nearly 70 and I love a short jacket but then very few people care what I wear!

lemongrove Thu 21-Feb-19 13:29:24

Actually, I think the OP has a point, and I don’t think short jackets suit T May, even though she is tall, slim (and elegant in much of what she wears.) I always think her jackets would look much better six inches longer.

lemongrove Thu 21-Feb-19 13:31:24

Didn’t notice what Soubry was wearing, but her facial expression always looks scary to me, as if she’s going to punch someone imminently.

Jabberwok Thu 21-Feb-19 14:00:26

And her skirt on occasions Lemon!!!! I'm also glad to see the plunging neckline has been abandoned, at least in working hours! I don't disapprove, but I felt they were a bit of a diversion! Can't imagine either on Mrs T!!

Jabberwok Thu 21-Feb-19 14:03:20

I agree about A. Soubry.! I find her quite scary!!!! T.M is probably fairly glad to see the back of her!

eazybee Thu 21-Feb-19 14:14:55

I saw Mrs. Soubry on the Andrew Marr Show some months ago, wearing a tight black lacy top with what appeared to be a fleecy top, tracksuit trousers with a stripe, and scarlet pixie boots. Her hair was bright blonde, her eyes heavily outlined, and she wore far too much red lipstick. She looked like a fugitive from the previous night's Strictly, and it was difficult to take her seriously.

Normally she dresses smartly, but what was the point of yesterday's outfit, in very obviously Tory blue?

kittylester Thu 21-Feb-19 14:53:53

I think they were making the point that they are Tories but the party is changing for the worse.

KatyK Thu 21-Feb-19 15:45:09

I can only look at Anna and think of her as the reporter she once was on Central News or something.

M0nica Thu 21-Feb-19 16:37:52

Women politicians and fashion are two opposites, like black and white, most seem to go in for skirts a bit too short, jackets a bit to tight and trousers that remind me of that Ogden Nash poem:
Oh deck your lower limbs in pants
Yours are the limbs, my sweeting
You look divine as you advance.
Have you seen yourself retreating?

Colours run to the garish,
