He must be the most embarrassing awful person on the planet, but as a Speaker, he makes everything about him, he is not impartial. He has typical "little man syndrome" because he is so ineffectual, smirking and meddling like a errant schoolboy. This latest stunt just about sums him up, who dares about the country, the chaos, as long as his final parting shot stopped everyone in their tracks, he waited until the 12th hour. When I think how impartial and dignified Betty Bootgroyd was, how did this man, trailing his equally mixed up, loud mouthed wife, ever get elected. He was confronted yesterday, where he never answered a question of waiting reporters and public, by someone be calling him traitor. How true, he is working against the country not with it.

Bercow is the best Speaker this country has had for a long long time.He is bright, articulate, witty and principled. His ruling was absolutely right. OP you really are a sore loser aren’t you - are you AL’s mum or sister?

Anja Wed 20-Mar-19 07:35:09

Rubbish!

Anja Wed 20-Mar-19 07:35:39

Oops that was to the OP

Anja Wed 20-Mar-19 07:37:34

‘He was confronted yesterday ,where he never answered a question of waiting reporters and public, by someone calling him traitor.’ [sic]

I should think not.

Poor OP too much time spent listening to big sis and reading the gutter press. I watched the actual clip and the BBC journalist hassling him in the street behaved appallingly. JB behaved with impeccable politeness. Later Norman Smith , the BBC deputy political editor, tweeted what a shining example of journalism his colleague had demonstrated which tells you everything you need to know about the BBC.

I think it's dangerous talk describing someone as a traitor - the tabloids do it often.

I wonder if the woman who called out 'traitor' to Bercow yesterday as he entered the gate was the same one who was inside Parliament last week and shouting the same at Anna Soubry as she was being interviewed on TV.

I find the accusation sinister, no matter which side it comes from.

Ginny42 Wed 20-Mar-19 07:50:52

He wasn't obliged to answer her and she said it after he'd passed her.

maryeliza54 Wed 20-Mar-19 07:52:45

The BBC deliberately chose, several times, to show this clip of the woman shouting traitor whilst the gutter press tore into him with no holds barred- it’s as if Jo Cox’s murder never happened. I’m ashamed thoroughly ashamed of what this country has become.

Riverwalk Wed 20-Mar-19 07:55:39

No doubt Bercow enjoys the limelight and his new-found worldwide fame but over the years he's been popular with the backbenchers and does run an unruly House well.

maryeliza54 Wed 20-Mar-19 07:58:36

The best Speakers always enjoy the limelight - it’s in the nature of the job and part of what makes them good.

Ginny42 Wed 20-Mar-19 08:03:35

Well a shrinking violet wouldn't have coped with recent days in the House. I very much admired Betty Boothroyd, but I wonder if she wouldn't have found business in the HoC very challenging recently. Different characters, different times.

I like Bercow, he runs a tight ship, he's also very amusing with some of his throw away lines.

maryeliza54 Wed 20-Mar-19 08:09:09

Absolutely agree - his use of language is extremely erudite and elegant.

BlueBelle Wed 20-Mar-19 08:10:33

He’s not the most likeable character but he definitely did the right thing and he did it well All strength to him

maryeliza54 Wed 20-Mar-19 08:20:14

People bother too much about being likable and not enough about doing their job properly IMO. It always comes back and bites them eventually as you can’t please all the people all the time and the gutter press are ever watchful.

lemongrove Wed 20-Mar-19 08:31:16

I would be impressed with all your replies to the OP if I knew that you had all voted to leave the EU in the referendum......but as it is, then not so much!

Although, Bercow ( yes, he does have little man syndrome
Cosmosand is a nasty sarcastic person into the bargain,)
Could have unwittingly helped the situation regarding
Brexit, as it will now concentrate minds.

varian Wed 20-Mar-19 08:37:42

Shocking how divided the nation has become if someone says she could only be impressed by the comments of those who voted for brexit.

maryeliza54 Wed 20-Mar-19 08:40:04

Yes well lemon that cuts both ways. So you think the reaction of the gutter press to his ruling and the BBC encouraging shouts of traitor are absolutely fine then? And that tbe OP was calm and reasonable? And you do know what comments about his height have long been a proxy for don’t you? Apart from just being utterly pathetic.

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Mar-19 08:40:25

Bercow has been elected to his position and in that is chairing the House of Commons in the way he feels is right and proper. Anyone can have a view on whether his judgments and rulings are correct, but when you ballot to elect someone as a chairperson, you then accept the decisions of that selected person.

The use of the word traitor against Bercow is totally wrong, and is being used all too often in recent times by the gutter press and others to heighten further the divisions in an already very divided nation.

lemongrove Wed 20-Mar-19 08:49:54

I agree that his decision has to be respected, the House has no choice in the matter.
He is disliked by many people and has a bad rep with women in the HOC too.
No doubt he knew what the press would say, and some of the population, but doubt that he cares.
varian are you being disingenuous, or really don’t understand my comment? It could well be the latter.

varian Wed 20-Mar-19 08:54:46

Read your own comment again lemon

lemongrove Wed 20-Mar-19 08:57:37

You really didn’t understand it then!

Maryeliza did.

Riverwalk Wed 20-Mar-19 09:01:31

'Could have unwittingly helped the situation regarding
Brexit, as it will now concentrate minds'

Indeed Lemon - it also pulls the rug from under the ERG & DUP who've been the tail wagging the dog. This small group of hard Brexiteers have been calling the shots for too long with their will they/won't they support the deal.

lemongrove Wed 20-Mar-19 09:03:53

Incidentally, although Bercow won’t be bothered by shouts of ‘traitor’ ( he thrives on controversy) of course it’s wrong.
However, given the late hour regarding Brexit it’s understandle that people feel strongly about it.

lemongrove Wed 20-Mar-19 09:04:22

I agree Riverwalk
