Why isn't anybody surprised they have done so well in the council elections?

Mycatisahacker Fri 03-May-19 09:45:14

Totally although I think it’s more disgust at the two main parties than proper support for the Lib Dem’s.

Mycatisahacker Fri 03-May-19 09:48:22

Blow posted too soon. They have however kept a consistent line on Brexit with no weasel words. Personally I don’t agree with them but they have at least been honest.

jura2 Fri 03-May-19 09:52:57

The election results have certainly put massive question marks re 'The will of the people' !

Urmstongran Fri 03-May-19 09:59:36

The Lib Dem’s have, to their credit, always been anti Brexit and consistent about it. However they only polled a measly 7% of the vote in the last GE.

I think at the time a lot of Remainers voted Labour but next time will vote Lib Dem as Jeremy Corbyn isn’t their man after all! The Brexit Party will be for Leave voters.

The Lib Dem = Remain
The Brexit Party = Leave

These will be the two big beasts in the next GE!

These council elections are just the sideshow.

Anniebach Fri 03-May-19 09:59:37

Wonder if Corbyn is so eager to have a GE right now

Urmstongran Fri 03-May-19 10:01:24

I bet not Annie! Labour will not do well with JC at the helm.

Anniebach Fri 03-May-19 10:10:30

Labour should have stormed through with wins throughout England

dragonfly46 Fri 03-May-19 10:14:47

Jura I agree it certainly puts in doubt that the will of the people is to come out of Europe.

gillybob Fri 03-May-19 10:19:35

With that clown as leader the LP will NEVER win a GE !

As a lifetime Labour voter I could never vote for the LP under his leadership and I think there are plenty others who feel the same !

dragonfly46 Fri 03-May-19 10:33:03

No that is the problem Gilly - they need a new leader and even then they will not at the moment win a GE but surely the result yesterday is indicative of how the country is feeling.

Mycatisahacker Fri 03-May-19 10:33:20

Plenty Gilly

Maybe but my view is disgust at the main parties rather then a huge change in voters to remain.

Polls suggest most people havnt changed their minds.

The Lib Dem’s often do well in council elections as a protest vote. GE is different.,

Of course labour should have swept the board. They havnt because of JC.

I also think in a GE the Lib Dem and the people’s vote party, can’t renenber their name, will split that vote. They need to amalgamate to get anywhere but too many egos in the people’s vote camp.

Mycatisahacker Fri 03-May-19 10:34:26

I can’t see why people can’t see he’s toxic to voters.

Labaik Fri 03-May-19 10:52:36

Massive gains for anti Brexit parties throughout the country and yet the news media is saying people are voting against Labour and Conservatives because they just want them to deliver Brexit and they aren't. Oh and no mention of Boris talking about voting in London because he didn't realise there was no voting in London [quickly deleted from his twitter account; lying scoundrel...angry ]….

maryeliza54 Fri 03-May-19 10:58:05

The lib dems do well in council elections not as a protest vote but because they are good at being local councillors - ime they really engage with local people, communicate, answer emails. Of course they are not perfect but who is? I think their soul is in local community politics and if we had a different system of the relationship between local and central government, they would really flourish

Urmstongran Fri 03-May-19 11:04:38

I agree maryeliza

MamaCaz Fri 03-May-19 11:07:45

I don't really understand why anyone would expect Labour to have swept the board.

Since the last General Election, there have been many claims that all votes for both Labour and Conservatives in that election indicated support for Brexit. I am sure I'm not alone in thinking that similar claims would be made about these elections, even though they are only for local councils.

I am sure that many leave voters, those whose interest in politics doesn't begin and end with newspaper headlines, have taken this on board and avoided voting for either of those parties for that very reason, even if in normal times they would have supported one of them wholeheartedly.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 03-May-19 11:09:09

Rees Mogg constituency?

Lib Dem’s 67% of the vote

How glorious!

Grandad1943 Fri 03-May-19 11:13:43

Well, Theresa May called the 2017 General Election after the Labour Party had not done well just prior to that in local and Bye-elections.

May believed she would "wipe out" the Labour Party in that General Election and dramatically increase her majority in the House of Commons.

And we all know what happened then. grin

Roll on the next election and the sooner the better.wink

Anniebach Fri 03-May-19 11:20:38

Yes we know what happened in the 2017 General Election,
Labour didn’t win.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 03-May-19 11:22:17

Looking at where the votes are being won, I think that you could argue that they are picking up a large remain vote.

Framilode Fri 03-May-19 11:31:10

I voted LD and so did my husband because we are remainers. I would have more respect for the Labour Party if they took a definite position on brexit and stopped playing both sides against the middle.

The Labour Party won't win an elec tion with just their northern (leaver) base. They need to pick up seats from the rest of the country.

maryeliza54 Fri 03-May-19 11:33:58

I don’t think Grandad said Labour did win ab but some of us remember that the result was a bit of a surprise to say the least. Even a Tory can concede that.

M0nica Fri 03-May-19 11:38:02

The Lib Dems were punished for their involvement with the Coalition, but now this is water under the bridge, the shambolic state of the two main parties has made the electors forget all about that.

It is significant that the main gains have been in the Liberal heartlands, where electors are returning to the party they have backed for years, which is more secure than Lib Dems being randomly returned in Conservative and Labour heartlands as a protest vote.

I am delighted that my own council has returned to Lib Dem control, even if my village remained solidly Conservative.

Love the news about Rees-Moggs local council. Somerset and the West country has always been a Liberal heartland. How on earth did JRM even get selected for a constituency down there, let alone get elected. perhaps at the next election........?

maryeliza54 Fri 03-May-19 11:39:55

Oh MO that would be the ‘Portillo’ moment
