- standing on the brink of abyss- surely Parliament and new PM and Cabinet won't dare, will they?

aggie Wed 29-May-19 20:47:38

Of course they will

phoenix Wed 29-May-19 20:49:10

Not sure they have a choice, it's a bit like schools, there are preset times for "end of term" so to speak.

Although of course under the circumstances, they should perhaps stay on.

Having said that, no doubt there will be a lot of schmoozing and plotting with regard to candidates for next leader!

sodapop Wed 29-May-19 20:50:20

Of course, as always self first and country last. There may be the odd exception to that.

LarrythecatknowsitAll Wed 29-May-19 21:08:08

of course they will

Anniebach Wed 29-May-19 21:32:37

What about the staff ? And parliment can be recalled

Septimia Wed 29-May-19 21:53:46

Oh I do hope they go - it'll mean no 'Today in Parliament' on Radio 4 at 11.30pm and, I hope, something more interesting to send me to sleep.

Admittedly it probably wouldn't be the best thing for the country.

Urmstongran Wed 29-May-19 22:05:14

Of course they will.

What about the staff Anniebach? this is a crisis situation and needs some sacrifices from the people who can help change things. I can't begin to count the number of times I had to go into work when I was 'off duty' to resolve a crisis or cover for a sick member of staff. This included nights, Christmas, Bank hols etc. The sense of entitlement of these people is astounding. I'm sure ancillary staff could work something out.

NannyJan53 Thu 30-May-19 08:26:16

Telling them no holidays till it is all sorted. That should concentrate their minds !

Anniebach Thu 30-May-19 08:51:18

sodapop ‘the ancillary staff could work something out’?

650 MP’s, work there, so easy to work something out ?

Teetime Thu 30-May-19 09:04:40

I suppose its not just them is it - its the army of civil servants that need a holiday - I should think they haven't had a very good time of it lately.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-19 09:07:08

I wasn’t thinking of the MP’s,

Jabberwok Thu 30-May-19 09:20:21

What can they do if they stay, except argue, shout, waste yet more money and infuriate the rest of us? Perhaps we all need a break from these vexatious people?!!

Jane10 Thu 30-May-19 09:24:48

They might as well go on holiday. They don't agree, they never will agree! The poor civil servants certainly deserve a break though. All those endless, mindless meetings!
All for nothing. sad

sodapop Thu 30-May-19 09:40:24

Surely not beyond the wit of man Annie In any case I'm sure MPs can manage without some services for a short time.

SillyNanny321 Thu 30-May-19 10:52:57

Got other things to worry about, so so sick of Brexit, politicians et al!! Please all go away & leave us in peace for a few weeks!
Maybe by then some nice person will have ended my personal misery of the last 18 months, bought the property I have lived in for 10 years, said I can stay another 10 years & all peaceful again.
Certainly will not be any difference if the whole of Parliament disappeared in a big puff of smoke except for a bit of peace!
So all go away on holiday & do not bother coming back! End of rant!!

Wilma65 Thu 30-May-19 10:56:30

I just looked online at the parliamentary calendar and there are only 32 days when they are in parliament between now and the end of October. They are on a break this week then will be back for a short while. Then summer recess, back for a couple of days then the conference season back for a few days then another break and a few days before 31st October. How will they get anything done

Neilspurgeon0 Thu 30-May-19 11:05:01

To echo Aggie of course they will

polnan Thu 30-May-19 11:07:26

Takes a lot to make me laugh.. but LOL and more LOL

Of course they will!

srn63 Thu 30-May-19 11:17:14

Of course they will, as soon as they were given the latest Brexit extension they went on holiday, unbelievable, they are shower of self seeking individuals who have no thought for their country. What the EU must think of us I don't know, I can only think they will be pleased to be rid of us now the politicians have shown their true colours.

Wobbles Thu 30-May-19 11:30:34

I've always believed in traditions but I think the time has come when Parliament should stay open throughout the year. MPs should get a set number of holidays just like the rest of the workforce.

silverlining48 Thu 30-May-19 11:30:58

Absolutely have no doubt at all, of course they will.

ChrisCross Thu 30-May-19 11:41:50

yes I'm sure they will all head off as usual. Maybe while they are away their loyal staff could do a better job and have it all sorted by the time they come back. Wouldn't that be a relief !! I'm sure we are all sick of hearing the word Brexit and somewhat in despair about the current utter chaos. Sadly we are a laughing stock.

Newatthis Thu 30-May-19 12:35:45

Couldn't we all revolt and sue the government of mis-management of taxpayers money - after all, that's what there doing with Brexit!! (I really mean it - could it be legal!)
