When asked, most recently by YouGov, who would you vote for in a General Election?, the Brexit party came top at 23%. Second were the LibDems at 21% Labour and Conservative were both on 20% Green 9% SNP 4% Plaid Cymru 1% Other 1%.

So , since LP and Cons are split between leave and remain and more or less cancel each other out that means that pro-brexit is 23% or possibly 24% if we assume others means UKIP, while anti-brexit is at 35%

So much for "the will of the people ", "everyone just wants us to leave" and all these other lies. Most people do not want any kind of brexit. We want to remain in the EU and it is high time our voice was heard.

People who support remain are depicted as enemies of democracy, going against the will of the people etc. It's a hard rhetoric to undo - lies have power, unfortunately, and any faith I had in the current political system has collapsed. I know that the ER people have been criticised a lot on this site, but I can understand why they have taken direct action: normal politics has collapsed, left is right and up is down and hatred and abuse seem to have taken over from argument and thoughtfulness. I agree: our voice needs to be heard.

I used to take part in YouGov polls but stopped as I was unhappy at the construction of the questions. I felt pretty much funnelled down to a certain result which I didn't like. Questions that needed to be asked just weren't there. Very suspicious. Since then I've not believed poll results as they clearly seem to reflect what the commissioners of each poll want to be found.

I do YouGov polls. I do usually answer honestly although mostly that means 'don't know'.
It is quite nice when I actually get to the £50 :-)

Smileless2012 Sat 22-Jun-19 13:55:48

The percentages you've quoted varian do not support your claim that "most people don't want any kind of Brexit". That would only be the case if the question had enabled the participants to say if their choice in the next GE was primarily determined on the issue of Brexit.

varian Sat 22-Jun-19 15:01:50

The claim that most people do not want any kind of brexit is based on a huge amount of polling over the last two years or more, eg when asked "In hindsight, do you think Britain was right or wrong to vote to leave the EU?" and excluding don't knows we see these results-

whatukthinks.org/eu/questions/in-highsight-do-you-think-britain-was-right-or-wrong-to-vote-to-leave-the-eu/?removed

These results are entirely consistent with the figures quoted in the OP as both Tory and LP are running at 20% support and the Leave majority amongst Tories is about the same as the Remain majority amongst LP voters and so they more or less cancel each other out.

Smileless2012 Sat 22-Jun-19 17:44:51

But varian, the poll you have referred too to substantiate your claim that the majority don't want any kind of Brexit, by the very question asked ie who would you vote for in a General election, is not about Brexit is it.

You constantly refer in your anti Brexit posts about the will of the people and ignore the will expressed by 17.4 million to leave the EU.

varian Sat 22-Jun-19 20:42:41

The numerous polls, including the one I linked, refer to brexit. Many who voted leave now regret that they were fooled by the leave liars.

Jane10 Sat 22-Jun-19 21:01:30

Equally varian there are those swayed the other way. I reckon another referendum would have about the same result possibly for different reasons : It seems likely that many people would be so sick of it all that they wouldn't bother to vote. This would leave only the hardliners on each side actually voting and snookering each other again. No easy answers.
One thing is clear - no more referendums without a supermajority being required.

varian Sat 22-Jun-19 21:07:36

People are sick of brexit but far too many seem to think that leaving with or without a deal would be the end of it - in fact that would only be the beginning. The only way to end this nonsense is to stop brexit.

Smileless2012 Sat 22-Jun-19 21:15:24

I agree that leaving the EU would only be the beginning, but not necessarily the beginning of the end.

Varian I think it's you who have been fooled by the EU all these years and brain washed by Vince Cable ?

Daisymae Sun 23-Jun-19 08:45:08

I think that the government's inability to negotiate a satisfactory outcome has made enough leavers have a change of heart. So why not ask the people and know for sure?

varian Sun 23-Jun-19 09:15:54

Of course Daisymae it would make sense to ask, but the leave liars are frightened that they might not like the answer

firecracker Is that just me or do you really believe that the umpteen millions who want to stop this brexit nonsense and remain in the EU have been brainwashed by Vince Cable?????

Opinion Polls

1.
Are believed if they agree with your own opinion and challenged if they don't.

2
Are not something to rely on when making judgements, making statements they should be merely treated as a possible pointer, especially as the numbers of people polled can be a so small a percentage of the public they are irrelevent.

3
The pollster 'usually' not always has a political bias to begin with and therefore the poll should be treated, at least viewed with caution.

Smileless2012 Sun 23-Jun-19 13:50:29

Do bear in mind though varian and Daisymae that there will be those who voted remain who view the EU's attitude to the negotiations as deliberately obstructive, and in another referendum would vote leave.

I have spent the last week in Normandy, catching the tail-end of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D Day.

Europe was liberated fromNazism by an army drawn mainly from Britian and the USA but with contingents from most of the coutnries that now form the EU. The sense of gratitude that the French, expecially the Normans have for those allies is enormous and colours our relations with them.

The sense of the coming together of nations in times of joint peril was what inspired Robert Schuman, Alcide De Gasperi and Konrad Adenauer of France, Italy and Germany to form the European community that is now the EU.

Between 1870 and 1945, 75 years, there were three large and destructive European wars. In the 75 years since there have been none. In 1994, the 5Oth anniversary of D Day. I was present at the unveiling of a memorial in the Norman village where our holiday home is. It was to a Lancaster bomber crew, who were shot down and killed in the parish on 6 June. The names and family details of the crew were read out. They were all in their 20s, several the same age as our son was then and as the parents names and their home towns were read out, I realised that thier parents were of the same age as we were then when they lost their sons. That not only our son, but also his father had not been called up to fight for their country like their grandfathers and great grandfathers is due to the peace, harmony and unity between the European countries.

For this reason, if no other, I support remaining in the EU where countries work together is that my children and grand children may also live into their 70s without Europe wide conflict.
