I expect most of us have at some time contributed to these huge mountains of debris. It was so much easier not to pollute in the "old days" because the range of plastic goods and coverings was very limited.
Although there are irresponsible people who throw stuff out of their car windows and don't trouble to bin their litter or take it home with them, I think the problem is bigger than that. Yes, it is disgusting to see cans and bottles discarded everywhere just because people are too lazy to bin them - but even if they are put in bins they have to be got rid of.
We used to buy bottled water and, having discarded them in the bin, thought no further about what would happen to them. I expect many of us have bought balloons, straws, cotton buds, liquid soap in plastic bottles, etc, etc, etc. - all items that aren't really essential but which are now a part of the everyday lives of many people. Many such items cannot be recycled so go into landfill or are incinerated.
It is very difficult to change a way of life that has developed over decades but we will all have to be prepared for the inconvenience of finding alternatives to items that cannot be recycled - or go without. Or the government will have to take a lead in this - but I won't hold my breath on that one.
