Anyone else wondering where all this money is coming from?

Johnson is promising money all over the place, glad handing hospital staff, money for schools blah blah blah. Assuming that these promises are kept, am I the only one who is wondering why this pot of money wasn't opened before? As a long term member of the previous administration, as were many of his cabinet cohorts, why didn't he try to get some of these (now) necessary funds spent before? Does this mean that austerity was not necessary for the financial health of the country but was simply Tory policy to spend as little as possible?

For reasons we'll never know but it does appear that a tight rein has been kept on spending.

It is the hypocrisy that gets me Ellenvannin, suddenly there is an admission that money needs to be spent, something that most of us have known for a long time.

Possibly from the many billions we won’t have to send to Brussels once we have left?

Austerity is Tory ideology, thats all.It was never a necessity .There was always the odd billion going spare for DUP bribes etc .

Austerity was used to allow the Conservatives to demolish public services and move to privatise the NHS. We are not a poverty stricken country. We can now and always could have, afford to fund proper public services.
Fascinating that Boris Johnson used the figure of 20,000 new police officers. Exactly the number that as part of the Conservative governments, he has voted to dismiss.
It's infuriating but I do hope he puts the money where his mouth is, funds 20,000 new police officer posts, funds their training and proper induction into their work. Maybe he'll employ some of the experienced staff they gave redundancy payments to. Not that bothered just increase the numbers.

Put more money in the NHS. Yes, I know it won't be enough to make up for what has been taken away/not funded in recent years but yes, put more money in.

Education, social work, nursing, policing, let the professionals manage their services, rather than government ministers going in with their own often ludicrous notions (Gove anyone) - yes it's infuriating but, if Boris Johnson does put more money in I'll be very pleased. I still wouldn't vote for any government he runs and can't imagine every voting Conservative in any event.

I agree Paddyann, none of this asuterity was necessary, and apart from anything else, it hasn't worked. Jennifereccles that money has already been spent on shoring things up here while we prepare for the economic disaster that Brexit will bring, but hey, as long as you read it on the side of a bus it must be right. A point about the 20,000 Police Officers though; this headline figure may have satisfied some of the tabloid press but the truth is that it will take quite a while to recruit and train new officers assuming that there are the trainers and colleges there to accept this huge intake of course. Then, when this newly trained phalanx of officers is let loose, where do they go? Most Police Stations around here have been sold for housing and officers need a base, a place for paperwork, cells to hold the masses of criminals that Pritti Patel assures us will be swept off the streets. Where is all the equipment coming from and the senior officers who do on the street training and mentoring of newly qualified officers? I am glad that they have finally admitted that the 20,000 cut in officers was a huge mistake, but headline announcements need to be looked at closely.
