Shortage of nurses

In our rural area we have all been shocked to hear that our local hospice is about to close its 12 inpatient beds because they cannot find nurses to staff it.

This is a very important local facility, a charity which so many local people support and which provides a valuable service.

The only alternative offered involves people travelling 30 miles or more each way.

Surely, with free movement of labour, we could once again, attract the nurses we need from other EU countries?

Expect a lot more.

Any leavers prepared to own this?

Surely, with free movement of labour, we could once again, attract the nurses we need from other EU countries?

Why should they chose "little britain" over all the other countries that are also actively recruiting from overseas?

Indeed notanan2 - with much much better working conditions and workloads + facilities, and much higher salaries. UK salaries were not too low, but now the Pound is down so badly, those EU workers find they have much less to save or send home for family.

No no no varian, you have this horribly wrong. You are a victim of Project Fear.
Keep stock piling the toilet rolls and we'll be ok.

No I’m afraid not. Something to do with a £30k salary I think.

Even if things change to make it easier for skilled workers to cone here, nobody WANTS to any more. Britain has shown its colours.

If you think nursing is in a staff crisis that aint nothin'

The doctors, medical scientists & radiographers are struggling even more than that to get staff!

A lot of overseas nurses ( non-EU ) are on contract with a permit that restricts their time in this country so after Brexit who knows what'll happen ? This is the most criminal act that could befall this country !

EllanVannin Thu 22-Aug-19 19:05:35

Brexit is the polite way of telling them all to sod off !

EllanVannin Thu 22-Aug-19 19:06:26

It's as bad as the Windrush scandal.

Something else that has occurred to me. This shower have already stated that they intend to diverge from the EU employment rules, as well as other things.

Who on earth would choose to work here where rights have been diminished, when they can work with more rights just across the channel?

This is going to make it even harder to fill posts imo.

The 12 inpatient places that we are told we are about to lose in our local hospice will be replaced by 2 extra beds in the facility thirty miles or more away.

We all need to speak up and do everything we can to STOP BREXIT. This brexit nonsense is costing lives.

I still don’t understand our long-standing failure to train enough nurses or to recognise that as the majority are female the pattern of their working lives is unlikely to be full-time employment until retirement. The same is true of doctors, given that half of the entrants to medical school are girls. How is it that government workforce planning is so incompetent, and has been for many years?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 22-Aug-19 20:03:01

Lack of investment in training
