Absolutely true but the huge outpouring of anger against that Australian man, by the vast majority of New Zealanders sent a clear message that we will NOT tolerate actions and racist attitudes like this.

You really had to be here to see it and other Kiwis will tell you that every school, business, government department, shop and every social group of any kind not only took to the streets but had nationwide meetings to see how they could help; planted trees to memorialise the dead, and thousands and thousands of bouquets and wreaths were laid at the gates of every mosque in NZ.

Some $12 million was raised within days and for a population of just over 4 million people, that too sends a clear message about who we support.

And it hasn't gone away or beed forgotten, even today I read that a truckload of building materials has gone to Christchurch to help with some homes, as people now need special provision for disabled or elderly hurt during that tragic time.

I wonder why ??

It was certainly a very impressive reaction even seeing it from afar BradfordLass. Sadly I am quite sure it is not the one we would get in England.

I'm not saying that it's right to form these " terror groups " and retaliation never solved anything but for goodness sake study the bigger picture and ask yourselves why this sort of thing is happening.

Of course one of the most well known world wide is White Supremacist Steve Bannon - who has frequent contacts with facist groups in Europe, as well as our own Prime Minister, who has received help from Bannon over speeches.
Farage and others are of course in frequent contact.

Their influence is insidious, particularly as so much of what they say appears “common sense” to particular groups and easy slogans to remember and repeat. Without critical thinking by the listeners these messages are being absorbed into the psyche and accepted as normal.

So EV would you say these groups are justified in their attitudes?

These extreme right-wingers were always there but now feel really emboldened and don't hide in the shadows so much now. They were around in the 1930s (cheered on by the Daily Mail...plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose) and never really went away. My son really narrowly missed one of of the London nail bombs. He heard it go off but was out of range of any shrapnel.

The point that Mr Basu makes about politicians needing to be careful about their rhetoric is very important. We have long had to suffer the irresponsible rantings of Farage and his ilk, but many Conservative politicians have indulged in appalling hate speech in the last three years, using words like "betrayal" about anyone who opposed brexit. You might expect it from the swivel-eyed ERGs, but it was sad to hear Theresa May use words like that, designed to inflame and foment civil unrest.

Exactly - as Mr Basu has reminded us -language counts. Emily Thornberry may be motivated by desperation as she made this irresponsible statement on the day the LibDems overtook Labour in an opinion poll, but that is no excuse. She should be ashamed of herself.
