Johnson and the Supreme Court

It seems that Johnson just can't get enough of Lady Hale and her colleagues. He is now planning to take the Benn Act to the Supreme Court to try to avoid asking for an extension to Article 50.

First he thinks that politics is nothing to do with the law and now he is seeking the help of the law to pursue no-deal Brexit.

Or is he? My inner cynic suspects that he knows that his appeal will be thrown out, but then he will be able to claim that the Supreme Court have 'thwarted the will of the people yet again' etc. etc.

EllanVannin Mon 07-Oct-19 10:22:08

This man is NOT for " the people " ! Who's he trying to kid ?

jo1book Mon 07-Oct-19 10:28:39

The thing is, he has set himself up as the champion of Brexiteers; if Brexit fails, he fails. If he fails the Tories are in deep trouble. It is really do or die for him.

paddyann Mon 07-Oct-19 11:13:16

there are many who are willing to dig a ditch ...and some who would be happy to fill it in.

quizqueen Mon 07-Oct-19 11:18:43

Another 'veiled' murder threat on a politician but the long term 'favourites' never get threatened with being thrown off this site.

Amagran Mon 07-Oct-19 11:28:12

I believe it was Johnson himself who offered to fill the ditch if no-deal Brexit failed.

Jabberwok Mon 07-Oct-19 14:41:40

He said that he would rather die in a ditch sooner than ask the EU for an extension to Brexit, not Brexit failing!
Judging by the opinion polls, not those many on this side of the border Paddyann!!

Urmstongran Mon 07-Oct-19 14:54:07

Boris’ popularity is soaring. Corbyn (and Swinson) must see those figures and be astonished!

Boris has to go to the Supreme Court because everyone else is doing it. If he doesn’t, that’s where the Remainers will challenge him (again).

What makes BJ popular?

Is it because he can get away with cheating on his wife?,

get away with lying through his teeth? again and again and again?,

get away with caring damn all for the UK, but only for advancing his career?,

is it because he's becoming a poor man's Trump?

maddyone Mon 07-Oct-19 19:16:06

John Major cheated on his wife.
Tony Blair lied and took us into an illegal war.
Peter Mandelson cared nothing for the UK, he cared just about his own career and making money for himself.
BJ is not a poor person’s Trump, because not only poor people voted for Brexit. BJ merely wishes to deliver Brexit. That’s why he’s popular. The greater majority voted to leave the EU, the majority was small but was still a majority. More than a million people majority. Whether we like it or not is immaterial, that is the situation.

SirChenjin Mon 07-Oct-19 19:22:31

The polls are now showing the opposite - more people want to remain. Boris may be more popular than JC but that isn’t translating to an increase in support for Leave

varian Mon 07-Oct-19 19:25:10

He cannot deliver the undeliverable promises of brexit which was based on lies. Most British people know that and that includes many who were fooled by the lies in 2016.

maddyone Mon 07-Oct-19 19:27:51

The polls showed a clear lead for remain before the referendum in 2016. It’s never a good idea to rely on polls to accurately show what the entire population thinks, as David Cameron, to his cost, found out.

SirChenjin Mon 07-Oct-19 19:31:16

They did - and then the vote happened, and now that it’s become clear that it’s a disaster we’re back at Remain.

MaizieD Mon 07-Oct-19 20:20:09

Perhaps the fact that the result did not reflect the polling was because of the facebook advertising campaign, on which Vote Leave spent £2.7 million. Many of which were targeted in the final few days of the campaign. See the sudden surge for Leave once the facebook campaign got going?.

This is just about the Beleave campaign.

The 24 adverts, seen at least 1.96 million times - and potentially as many as 4.2 million times - were all posted in the final three days of the EU referendum campaign.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-44966969

N.B The figures given for 'views' of each advert in this report are far higher than those reported by the BBC item.

mobilemarketingmagazine.com/vote-leaves-brexit-ads-and-targeting-methods-revealed-by-facebook

Adverts like the ones shown in this report; a selection of the adverts released by facebook to the Digital and Media Select Committee

www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-vote-leaves-dark-brexit-ads

Here are all the adverts released to the Select committee:

www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-committees/culture-media-and-sport/Fake_news_evidence/Ads-supplied-by-Facebook-to-the-DCMS-Committee.pdf

The tiny handful of Grans on here who protest that they don't have facebook and didn't see the adverts are a negligible quantity compared with those who did see them. Just because some people didn't see them or claim to be impervious to advertising it doesn't follow that no-one saw them or that no-one is impervious to advertising..

paddyann Mon 07-Oct-19 20:24:15

Now the court of session has denied the petition ..will Boris Johnson be tried for conteempt of court if he doesn't send the extension letter?

SirChenjin Mon 07-Oct-19 20:51:27

Let’s hope so paddyann - although I suspect that’s precisely what he’ll do. Either that or he’ll come up with some other ruse that will require further court hearings to bring him to heel. He’s not taking this being told what to do lark well at all.

MaizieD Mon 07-Oct-19 20:58:14

They 'denied the petition' because Johnson's lawyer gave them a document in which Johnson said that he would observe the Benn Act. In view of Johnson's apparent declared intention to obey the law the court could hardly have implied that he was lying and slap an interdict (I think that's the correct term) on him anyway. That most definitely would have been a political act.

However, it's going to appeal tomorrow. Not sure on what grounds...

SirChenjin Mon 07-Oct-19 21:05:06

Does ‘lying toe rag’ constitute as legal grounds? ?

MaizieD Mon 07-Oct-19 21:49:20

Lying filthy piece of toerag please, SirChenjin... wink

paddyann Mon 07-Oct-19 21:54:27

quizqueen I didn't thraten anything far less murder. The "honorable BOJO said he'd die in a ditch if he didn't deliver brexit or words to that effect.I was just informing you that there are volunteers to dig it for him !

SirChenjin Mon 07-Oct-19 22:01:52

Well bonking Boris is likely to called before the Supreme Court to explain why he lied to them when he said that he would follow the “Ben Act” and the frustrated it. I cannot see why the HoC would not try him for contempt of the house. Life can be fun for some gringringrin
