We should all be deeply ashamed by this

I didn't think my heart could sink further. What has this nation become? We used to be seen around the world as a bastion of tolerance.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/oct/24/majority-of-voters-think-violence-against-mps-is-price-worth-paying-for-brexit

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 18:31:44

I haven't looked at the article but just read the headline and cannot think that is true.

I know of no-one who condones violence whatsoever, however they vote.

GabriellaG54 Thu 24-Oct-19 18:31:57

Violence for any reason is abhorrent except in cases of reasonable defence.
I am a pacifist and believe that talking is the better option.

Urmstongran Thu 24-Oct-19 18:40:28

The majority of voters?? Really? Total madness if true.

MamaCaz Thu 24-Oct-19 18:49:36

I challenge the legitimicy of their claim regarding 'the majority of voters ...'

Who have they asked? Is there a single one of us Gransnetters who has officially been asked that question? Or do any of you know anyone who has officially answered that question?

Elegran Thu 24-Oct-19 18:49:51

They didn't ask me. I don't suppose they asked anyone else on GN either. I wonder just who they did ask?

MamaCaz Thu 24-Oct-19 18:51:04

Legitimacy blush

MawB Thu 24-Oct-19 18:51:52

Fake news-remember “ There are 3 types of lie- Lies, damn lies and statistics” ?

Elegran Thu 24-Oct-19 19:01:45

Well, I have no intention of feeling deeply ashamed. It is not my opinion. I shall let those who made that answer feel ashamed of themselves. (whoever they are - and I certainly don't believe that they are a majority of the electorate)

I shall have a look at the source of this "revelation" and see
1) Who did the survey, and what are their qualifications and statistical experience?
2) How many people did they as?
3) Where did they find the people they asked?
4) How were the questions asked?
5) Who wrote the Guardian article and what is their history in statistics and survey analysis?

I may be some time.

ladymuck Thu 24-Oct-19 19:05:19

There is no justification for it. I can't help wondering if that is a deliberately provocative headline, as so many are, and probably taken out of context.

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 19:05:30

Thank you Elegran
We shall await your findings.

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 19:07:18

They asked 4,103 people out of - how many million?

It's a joke and rather a nasty one.

varian Thu 24-Oct-19 19:09:47

Are we to conclude that the majority of voters have been thoroughly brainwashed be the leave liars and their supporters in the media?

If so this is absolutely shocking. Our once democratic country has been corrupted for the last four years by media influencers who do not have our best interests at heart.

M0nica Thu 24-Oct-19 19:19:02

The article gives no guide to who the respondents were. Was it a carefully calculated cross section of the population of the country, matching that in age, ethnicity, sociodemographic group, geographical distribution etc, or was the sample drawn just from students at the university or people in the street? I am very suspicious of any survey that does not include details of the sampling frame.

I find it particularly odd that The Guardian, of all papers, should conceal this information.

Daisymae Thu 24-Oct-19 19:24:24

They asked over 4000 politically representative people. Not random and a reasonably large number of people. What sad times we line in.

varian Thu 24-Oct-19 19:25:20

All this so-called survey seems to show is that far too many people read the poisonous pro-brexit right wing tabloids and let them tell them what to think and say.

Wake up folk. You really are not stupid sheep so start thinking for yourselves.

Violence towards our elected representatives is totally inexcusable, even if some of them have been brainwashed by tax dodging billionaires.

lemongrove Thu 24-Oct-19 19:26:56

I don’t feel in the least ashamed, thank you very much.
Dodgy and very wrong of The Guardian IMHO.

ginny Thu 24-Oct-19 19:43:21

I certainly don’t feel ashamed as it is not my view.
Violence is never the answer to anything.

MissAdventure Thu 24-Oct-19 19:44:21

Well, perhaps those who took the survey can feel ashamed.
I'm absolutely certain they don't speak for me or anyone I know.

LondonGranny Thu 24-Oct-19 19:51:30

Why is wrong of the Guardian to report on a survey done by a good university & overseen by respected academics using established methodology? Should the media stop reporting the toxic atmosphere MPs work in? Should they have hushed up the murder of Jo Cox?
I really don't understand that rationale. It doesn't let anyone, leavers or remainers off the hook. I feel shame because this country doesn't seem like the one I grew up in.

Oopsminty Thu 24-Oct-19 19:52:10

Are we to conclude that the majority of voters have been thoroughly brainwashed be the leave liars and their supporters in the media?

It's Remain voters as well.

Personally I think it's dross from The Guardian.

Elegran Thu 24-Oct-19 20:15:41

I can't find the original report of this survey online. All I can find are media articles about it, which quote statistics from it, but don't have links that will take you to the actual words.

It seems that the study itself is not public. It is surprising that it is not available - maybe it may appear in public in the next few days.

suziewoozie Thu 24-Oct-19 20:17:07

It’s very easy via google to find out the details of this research. It’s academic research carried out by a team headed by two reputable academics based at Cardiff and Edinburgh. It’s the latest findings from a project called the Future of England which has been going for several years. I find some responses on here utterly risible - the Guardian shouldn’t publish the results of a survey because you don’t like the results? Have you any idea how fascist that sounds? Perhaps we should burn copies of the research and imprison the academics who carried it out?

Fiachna50 Thu 24-Oct-19 20:17:44

Why exactly have the Guardian published this? Sorry I am suspicious that this is the media doing what they do best - s* stirring. I know Leave voters, none of them would condone violence ever.

suziewoozie Thu 24-Oct-19 20:19:14

Oh dear Elegran didn’t have you down as a conspiracy theorist. I’ve just read through all the individual questions asked and seen the data across the various subgroups in the survey.
