New Parliament & a new Speaker

Will be a definite improvement on dreadful Bercow. Good riddance.

Nicky Morgan has been given a life peerage and has been reinstated as culture secretary after losing her seat.

Zac Goldsmith has also been given a peerage and a place in Government after losing his seat.

I don’t think Nicky Morgan lost her seat, she didn’t contest it. Zac Goldsmith lost his, yes.

You are correct Calendargirl sorry about that. I suppose she must think she will get less abuse in the Lords than in parliament.

Just been watching this and would echo the comment by Calendargirl

For the first time in 3 and a half years I feel happy and content and calm about politics and Brexit.

This Tory victory was the best Christmas present this country could have wished for. I'm so happy right now

I loved Bercow. Very impartial. Not to mention strict.

Another happy and relieved household here. The relief in the country is palpable.

for a little less than half the voters, yes -

for the rest, no- despair and real worry about the future.

May I join those of you feeling optimistic about politics for the first time in years. I also welcome Sir Lindsay Hoyle as speaker. A breath of fresh air after the last one. (About time the Speaker was good. What was the name of that Scottish one before Bercow, George Martin? Awful. Have to go right back to Betty Boothroyd for a decent one).

I suppose it depends on so many things, and who you talk to.
The young people I know are in despair, and some are actually frightened- especially those from the EU and ethnic minorities, even though they are second, third or more generation British, and who see attacks in the street, on public transport, etc, rise. And those who see that within just days, the sale of NHS services and the threat to workers' rights, product safety and animal bio safety, welfare, etc- are already on the table. The country is as divided and possible more, than ever- as more the Tories so called landslide was voted by a minority of votes- helped in by the outdated and totally undemocratic FPP system
