Australian wild fires, are the airports operating. ?

Try Googling for the airport in Sydney. That will have more up to date news than anyone on GN is likely to have.

I have relatives in WA. Airports are open with plenty of seats available going to aus but rammed full with no spare capacity leaving aus

You need to find the emergency site that covers sydney and there is also current news on ABC australia. There is an excellent emergency site for WA. My son in law was on their roof fire fighting embers 2 years ago while dd was trailering animals away

My daughter in Canberra, their property in NSW is in emergency areas, her parents in law won’t evacuate their home although that is what they are being told to do, they live near Batemans Bay. People panic buying bottled water in Canberra!

I have found another map, this time of the whole of australia. Click on lightening strikes, these are the main fire starters

If you go in close up then sydney looks ok, their distances are vast

we have no concept of the scale in australia, the distances really are vast, several areas look safe enough, like sydney and batemans bay. Try not to worry

Gingster local advice would be best. The smoke may be bad, if your goddaughter could get hold of face masks for her and the children that could be a good idea.
She will be keeping the news on, finding out the local points of contact and pack up for an evacuation if necessary - let's hope it will not be necessary.

Theres no danger in Sydney i.live here. Your goddaughter will be fine. South coast of nsw is where the danger is. No power in sydney is nothing to do with the fires.

There’s info on the thread -I’ve already had great news this year.
I was so happy to hear my DD was OK that I didn’t give enough thought to the thread title.

I’ve been using the fire watch site but when I saw a fire in the middle of the lake near my DD’s house I lost a little faith in its accuracy.

I have two cousins in Australia, one in Brisbane and one in Victoria. Both are ok and well away from the fires, but both are pleading for me to send them rain as everywhere is baked dry!!!! I understand the heat is just awful and making life very uncomfortable too. I've always rather envied them their Aussie life, not quite sure now!!

Well, looking at that fire watch map via the link above gave me a fright because there appeared to be huge clusters in various areas, just where different lots of my family live.
However, if you expand the map it does seem to pinpoint the fires more exactly.

Although, worringly, several new fires have started in the last 12 hours near where DD and family live.

put ABCemergency into facebook, there are very current posts, information and videos

I'm not quite sure of the accuracy of the map as DD and SIL did not see any new fires which appeared on the map when they drove past yesterday.

Another two or three still being fought had disappeared from the map overnight (but not put out yet).

I have just looked at the WA fire map and yesterday was blue ie ok (ish) and today suddenly they are yellow ie very high risk

Canberra airport wasn't receiving incoming flights last time I watched 9News.
I phoned my D in Sydney this morning and so far the fires aren't too near but the air is bad and they have to go easy on the water.
