Colonel (Major) Tom is to be knighted, proposed by the P.M.

Well deserved.

Alima Wed 20-May-20 07:21:44

So well deserved. He restores faith in human nature. (We really need a like button for posts such as these).

It is probably the story that will be remembered as the most positive thing that happened in lockdown.

So happy for him...a grand gentleman ?

Brunette10 Wed 20-May-20 08:02:35

Very well deserved - how proud he and his family must feel. I know I am and I don't know him flowers

Beechnut Wed 20-May-20 08:05:17

Lovely news ?

Anniebach Wed 20-May-20 08:20:31

Wonder if a ceremony can be arranged, hope so

sodapop Wed 20-May-20 08:57:00

Finally a knighthood awarded to a thoroughly deserving person and not some showbiz or sports 'personality'
Well done Captain Sir Tom.

Well deserved, if this hadn't happened I think there would have been mass protests!

I heard his grandson on radio this morning - he was obviously extremely proud of his grandfather and said when he sees him he won't know whether to salute, bow or kneel in front of him! He also said that at some point there will be the biggest party ever.

I am delighted to hear the news. Someone who has rallied this country and lifted spirits like no one else was able to, NOT a businessman or a celebrity. A refreshing change.

Blinko Wed 20-May-20 09:32:38

A fitting award for such a tremendous achievement by a real gentleman. A lovely family too.

Teetime Wed 20-May-20 09:33:58

Juts lovely! smileflowers

Gran16 Wed 20-May-20 09:34:34

Very well deserved. He is a true gentleman and well respected. I hope we see the ceremony on the tv when it happens.

Uninspiringcowkeer Wed 20-May-20 09:35:49

The honours system used to be for people doing good works, not for being highly paid for doing your job or for being very good at something. Nice to see a change

Grandmabeach Wed 20-May-20 09:36:07

His family must be so proud of him. He has been such an inspiration. I hope somebody produces a book of the events which can be passed on by his grandchildren to show to their grandchildren.

minxie Wed 20-May-20 09:38:19

How wonderful, so deserving for a very sweet man. I can’t wait to see this happen and as Captain Tom said.’ I hope she is gentle with the sword’
Did anyone see the clip of him on Blankety Blank, when his girls were teenagers, priceless

hazel93 Wed 20-May-20 09:38:57

So well deserved. A light in the dark in these grim times.

Lynn1959 Wed 20-May-20 09:39:11

lemsip Wed 20-May-20 09:47:45

EllanVannin Wed 20-May-20 10:09:14

Well done Sir Tom. A well deserved knighthood which makes a change ! A lovely gentleman indeed.

H1954 Wed 20-May-20 10:11:06

And not before time either! Long overdue in my opinion! Well done!

Jane43 Wed 20-May-20 10:13:06

He really is an inspiration all over the world and has a lovely sense of humour too. I have a friend in Minnesota USA and she tells me the state Governor spoke about him in one of his recent public addresses. I do hope The Queen is able to knight him as he hopes.

Quizzer Wed 20-May-20 10:21:24

I have no problem with Sir Tom being knighted. However, all he actually did was accept a challenge from his family to do 100 laps of his garden for charity. It was the television and social media that blew this up to the proportions it achieved.

What about all the medics and volunteers who are risking their lives to help us, will they all get knight/damehoods? I doubt it.

Will the medical staff get paid appropriately for the difficult and highly skilled jobs they do every day? I doubt it.

Sir Tom's knighthood is a PR exercise. I don't begrudge him the honour but I feel that there are many, many others who are more deserving. I expect to be shot down by saying this.

red1 Wed 20-May-20 10:22:33

well done to the old soldier, i wonder when all the key workers are to be knighted?

BladeAnnie Wed 20-May-20 10:28:56

So well deserved - he's true inspiration
