But I thought that there wasn't space for any more foreigners, that we couldn't get doctor's appointments because of them and schools were bursting at the seams and they were taking all our jobs while scrounging our welfare benefits and getting priority housing, (etc) Not to mention speaking foreign languages when in the UK and having special shops with their national foodstuffs in..

So why the total silence on the prospect of a blanket invitation to 3 million Hong Kongers?

We've see 'can't take any more immigrants' views from Leavers on here quite often. I was just quoting what I've seen.

It was immigration which swung the Brexit vote - nothing to do with all the marvellous trade deals and all that money for the NHS promised etc. I expect most Brexit voters who are all highly educated and make a point of their non racist credentials will be thrilled, especially since many of them think this government can do no wrong.

I think he's offering them refuge from a dodgy government....ha bloody ha.He's heading one of those himself or is he.I was sure there were loads of posts on here about foreigners taking "our" jobs and with the number of redundencies being announced on a daily basis and Brexit more or less meaning more businesses closing their doors WHERE will the jobs ,homes,schools etc be found for these 3 million souls in need.
Please remember this is a government that makes people pay for a spare bedroom ....cant see them supporting an extra 3 million people ,can you?

What's the difference between Hong Kong refugees and other refugees? If we can take in people from Hong Kong then we can and should take in people escaping war, famine. political upheaval etc from anywhere in the world.

It’s a game of bluff with the Chinese government in any case, and not all Hong Kong residents want to move thousands of miles away to live, they like it where they are.However if push comes to shove we will be a way out for some.Chinese people are hard working and won’t be coming here for any hand outs.Hong Kong has a had a hard time adjusting since the hand over, they are not used to a regime like China cutting down on their freedoms.

I wonder whether he is pandering to China. It probably suits them to be able to get rid of what they consider troublemakers. The whole population is only 7.5m so it is inconceivable that nearly half would want to leave and which 3 million would that be - those China wants to leave.

Many HongKongers might have jumped at the chance of a new life in the UK five years ago - but now? I'm not so sure.

Why have so many well educated Britons left? There has been a huge brexit brain drain of Britons with transferable skills emigrating to other EU countries including half of my family .

Life under the communist People’s Republic is not going to be safe.

They will be aspirational business people on the whole, many will already have property in the uk and they will be a huge asset to this country.

More are clamouring to go to other countries than here. Those who want asylum here usually already have family members in this country or speak English. It makes sense to go where you may have family support or be able to speak the language.

It's a bit of a generalisation to say all Chinese people are hardworking and it suggests that other people aren't. There will be hard workers and shirkers in every race and population. Not everyone who comes to the UK comes for a handout. In fact it's very difficult to survive in the UK if you are an asylum seeker as you're banned from seeking work so are forced to rely on the 'hand outs'. I don’t actually believe for one minute there will be anything but the smallest trickle allowed in. It’s another Johnson gimmick which will fall apart as everything else he promises does as soon as it hits the cold light of day.
