Who am I

I was sent this today by a good friend.

Doe this resonate?

Thoughts please.

Who Am I?

I used to think I was just a regular person, but I was born white,
which now, whether I like it or not, makes me a racist.

I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today's standards,
makes me a fascist.

I am heterosexual, which now makes me a homophobe.

I am mostly non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class
and an ally of big business.

I was christened by my parents, which now labels me as an infidel.

I am retired, which makes me useless.

I think and I reason, therefore I doubt much that the main stream
media tells me, which must make me a reactionary.

I am proud of my heritage, which makes me a xenophobe.

I value my safety and that of my family and I appreciate the police
and the legal system, which makes me a right-wing extremist.

I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to
each individual's merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist.

I (and most of the folks I know), acquired a fair education without
student loan debts and little or no debt, which makes me some kind of
an odd underachiever.

I believe in the defence and protection of my country and I honour
those who served in the Armed Forces, which now makes me a right
wing-militant.

Please help me come to terms with the new me... because I'm just not
sure who the hell I am anymore!

Funny ...it’s all just taken place over the last 10 to 15 years!

As if all this wasn’t enough to deal with ... now I’m not even sure
which lavatory to go into!

To revert back to the dangers of these listicles.

Sometimes the smallest things can reveal the most. Last week Boris Johnson delivered his big speech on future investment in our infrastructure, and referred to planning rules. Specifically, he referred to the great crested newt, which has historically held back certain building projects. With classic bombast, he declared: "Newt-counting delays are a massive drag on the prosperity of this country."

But then a few days later, the BBC reported something peculiar. Such delays had turned out to be a thing of the past. Journalists could find no evidence of significant delays to building projects because of newt surveys. The Local Government Association couldn’t find any examples either. Current surveys could now in fact be done rapidly. The head of the Wildlife Trusts said the speech was "pure fiction". The prime minister had promised to eliminate a problem which did not exist.

This is not meant to be a criticism of Johnson but an example of how completely erroneous beliefs become imprinted in people's minds by the mere repetition of them.

I remember the 'crested newts' thing; it turns out it happened three years ago, but it's not a common occurrence or one that significantly holds up development. It's just one of those things that happen occasionally.

But now people are under the impression that all developments are going to be beset by long delays and complications because of what appear to be inconsequential surveys discoveries. And get cross about it... and believe that it's a really big and Bad thing..

It's not rational and it can easily be used to manipulate people.

And in a while, we can expect Johnson to proclaim how quickly things were achieved and how that problem has been avoided.
And lots of people will be so pleased with him.

Trump is already proclaiming that the US has had fewer Covid deaths than any other country.

Do his fans never think about checking out the facts or do they either just believe everything he says and think that the facts are "fake news"?
