The worst 3 British politicians in the last 50 years

I was thinking about who I would think had done most harm to British democracy and why. I was tempted of course by Margaret Thatcher, but much as I hated the woman I don't think she harmed our democracy. So my three are Tony Blair for his actions in taking a Labour government into an illegal war, Nick Clegg for ruining the Lib Dems by taking them into coalition with the Tories and David Cameron for starting the whole EU debacle and then jumping ship.
Who are yours and why?

Blair(and his wife)
Corbyn
Johnson

Many of the people I’ve seen in photographs and films taken by the media are young. I’m afraid far too many young people couldn’t give a toss who’s running the country, looking at Soho and other places after the pubs reopened, what they care about is having the pubs open.
And they don’t give a toss about social distancing either!

What about you, GrandadBrian? What are your choices?

GranddadBrian Sat 22-Aug-20 14:55:48

I wondered if there is such a huge gap between older people’s and younger voters. After analysing these pages I realise there are incredible prejudices still in The mind of many older people. Many prejudicial stories which are not factual but really tabloid headlines. That many Oldies are not even concerned about the incompetence of Boris and many of his Minister, not even his lies. No wonder after the incompetence shown since March are young people shaking their heads in bewilderment.

Johnson because he is an awful human being, a liar, lazy and only out for himself and his cronies - way above anyone else. Cameron because he started this whole Brexit disaster and Corbyn because his useless extreme left policies stopped Labour having any chance of power.

Thank you Varian.

I believe that most of the former council houses sold under "right to buy" are now private rentals.

trisher Mon 17-Aug-20 18:26:27

I've always suspected that the sale of council houses was also designed to reduce the power of councils. Just think of the income they would be receiving if they held most of the rental sector and the power that would give them.

varian Mon 17-Aug-20 17:36:51

The councils were not allowed to invest the money in new social housing, even though the generous discounts meant that they had to sell three homes to build one.

janeainsworth Mon 17-Aug-20 17:34:51

Maizie I’ve always assumed that the councils received the money from the sales of housing, which they could have then reinvested.
But happy to be corrected if I’m mistaken.

TerriBull
Love, love, love the reasons you have given for your choices. I agree with every word you wrote.

varian Mon 17-Aug-20 17:17:54

Let us just remember which party stood unanimously against the Iraq war - the Liberal Democrats.

If Tony Blair had not got quite as many votes in 1997 (thanks to Rupert Murdoch), there might have been a Labour/LibDem coalition and the Iraq war could not have happened.

Millie22 Mon 17-Aug-20 17:14:18

Tony Blair
Tony Blair
Tony Blair
He is responsible for the deaths of so many of our brave service personnel.

timetogo2016 Mon 17-Aug-20 17:12:36

I agree trisher,i would add Neil Kinnock to the list if i could.

MaizieD Mon 17-Aug-20 17:05:35

The failure was that the housing stock wasn’t replaced and maintained at the same levels for subsequent generations who needed them.

Who was responsible for that 'failure', jane? hmm

NotTooOld Mon 17-Aug-20 17:00:02

Chris Grayling, failing Grayling - disaster wherever he is involved.
Tony Blair for the weapons of mass destruction lie.
Jeremy Corbyn - for not realising he was just not up to the job.
Diane Abbott for not doing her homework and staying on top of her brief. She let women down.
Oh, sorry - that is four.

janeainsworth Mon 17-Aug-20 16:49:41

Sorry I meant that the housing stock wasn’t maintained at the same levels by the councils.

janeainsworth Mon 17-Aug-20 16:47:41

Gill I worked in an area which was surrounded mainly by council houses. Many of the tenants were very pleased that, having paid rent for years, they finally had a chance to own their own home.
The failure was that the housing stock wasn’t replaced and maintained at the same levels for subsequent generations who needed them.

GillT57 Mon 17-Aug-20 14:42:36

I didn't like Thatcher because of many of her policies, especially the selling off of council properties and the ensuing housing crisis which is harming people's lives today, but.....I like to think she did have a strong sense of responsibility for the job and would be appalled at the liars, adulterers, pocket liners that are in the current Tory cabinet, so Mrs Thatcher goes on the reserve bench.

Blair has to be on the list due to the Iraq war. Regrettably he did many good things, and personally things were good for us during his terms, he sorted out a lot of things, but the Iraq war and the consequences are too awful to be put aside.

Johnson of course, because he is not up to the job. He is lazy, untrustworthy, a liar and all in all a vile human being.

Cameron because he was weak, ineffectual and not up to the job, he pandered to the erg group and we now where that has brought us to now, with Brexit looming while he swans about. He wasn't very bright, well educated and intelligent are not the same thing and he was a fine example of this.

Luckygirl Mon 17-Aug-20 14:28:15

quizqueen - it is not about not accepting the result of the referendum; it is about the reasons that it was used - not an attempt at democracy, but DC copping out of dealing with his party; and the bungling of the subsequent negotiations, which have been a farce.

Alima Mon 17-Aug-20 14:24:41

Woo hoo, TerriBull, love the reasons for choosing your winners. I think you could easily get a position as features editor/writer on the Standard on the strength of it!

TerriBull Mon 17-Aug-20 13:11:35

Tony Blair. For being George Bush's lapdog and taking us into that war under false pretences. Questions that arose around the sinister death of Dr David Kelly, for presiding over a government where social mobility went backwards

David Cameron, posh boy lightweight, never really had the necessary messianic qualities to be the true "heir to Blair" Always felt being PM was part of some tick box list he had compiled for himself. Master exponent of facile photo opportunities, hugging huskies/hoodies/Romany caravans, if it looked good hug it and then let the world know. All those fatuous vlogs from the Chez Cameron where he tried to win over the nation's women by posing in his kitchen making breakfast, well chucking some Cheerios in a bowl for his offspring...........no real effort required there Dave groaned the nation's women folk, breakfast is a fry up or in his world Kedgeree served from a silver platter, none of us were fooled. He never seemed to have any real convictions and then blew everything in thinking he would garner some sort of deal from the EU to sell to the British Public., failed miserably and at the end of the day never saw the writing on the wall! In the words of Danny Dyer, pissed off to the South of France to stick his trotters up and left his successors to get on with it!

Nick Clegg, for so many reasons, but possibly he exemplified that strata of London elite, terminally out of touch with the public, when asked what he thought the pension was he said "£30" a week, "yeah right Nick see how far that goes" Lets not forget he finally morphed into Judas when he pissed off to the US to take 30 pieces of silver to work for one of the Great Satan tax dodgers, can't remember which one, and he probably still didn't know what the State pension was when he left office.

Gordon Brown would be a worthy runner up though, did love him squirming through "Bigot Gate" what a wonderful revelation to find out what most of us already knew, what politicians really think of the electorate. I must say the poor woman who got propelled into the public eye in such a way was extremely magnanimous in having old rictus grin turn up on her doorstep for a cuppa, I'd have had to get in touch with my inner Lucrezia Borgia and nip off down the garden to snip off some Bella Donna or whatever it's called to steep the tea in, "Do have a hob nob and another cup of tea Gordon"

I'd also include "We're all in this together" Six Jobs Osborne" or is it 7 now and Peter "I'll have some Guacamole on the side" Mandelson. Never could quite work out the differences between those two both seemed to be part of the same milieu that inhabited a world of Davos summits and being entertained on dodgy oligarch's yachts.

Yes eat your hearts out Scottish GNs, our LONDON SEWERS are definitely a crap above the rest it has to be said, how lucky we are to be so affluent in our effluent!

paddyanne Mon 17-Aug-20 11:53:26

ANY tory PM you care to mention,Scotland hasn't voted for Tory government since before I was born ..in 1953 ,Labour is now dead here too.Think that might show that having parties based, registered and led froma different country is losing appeal for the people who live work and contribute here and find their contributions go towards BOjo's bridge and HS2 and all sorts of things that dont affect or improve life north of the border.like LONDON SEWERS!!! Now Bojo has decided to cover us in union flags as if that will make him popular ....l ol ..he hasn't a clue !

paddyanne Mon 17-Aug-20 11:48:16

Democracy quizqueen ? Is it democracy that a whole country ...and Scotland IS a country not a region...get a government that they haven't voted for on a regular basis ,is forced to do what the BIGGEST country in the so called union says and has our money taken from us and used for English projects? The SNP IS the democratically elected government of Scotland ..try to keep up.If they weren't wanted they wouldn't be voted for .Simple .
I 'm not religious but if I was I'd be thanking god for giving us a leader thats NOT Boris Johnson ....hopefully we'll be out of the DIDunited kingdom very soon

PetitFromage Mon 17-Aug-20 09:18:25

Johnson, Johnson and Johnson. Oh, and did I mention Johnson?
