The concerns expressed by recent “Panorama” programmes and Silver Voices regarding NHS care for the elderly raises very serious issues. It has been quite clear best treatment and care is not being made available to older patients based on age alone. There is however an example before us of what can be achieved with the appropriate care. HM the Queen 94 and her husband 99, I am sure no GP or NHS service would ever measure their healthcare worth based on age. It really is time to fight for an NHS that serves the needs of all patients. Many senior citizens will have paid into a healthcare/social system throughout a working life, and many still contributing via taxation; and discrimination on age infringes human rights and is also illegal. Make your voice heard on there behalf.

My DH has recently had a telephone conversation with his GP., Followed up by a face to face consultation because the Dr. felt he needed to see the injury. It all worked perfectly.

Back in the day, and I’m not the ancient we didn’t have many female Drs. at all. I am glad that we do have many now and I think that they have a right to a life other than work. Better that they work part time and stay in the profession than leave because the work/life balance is too stressful.

IMO, for what it’s worth, I think the NHS has been so successful that it’s given us permission not to look after ourselves.

larry and Pamela
Thank you for lovely posts outlining the kind of treatment most GPs provide. You’ve made me feel better.

Several of my carer friends quit their jobs because of the amount of time they had per resident. It was not enough to give even basic care let alone the fact that it was the only time an elderly person would see another person for days at a time. Its heartbreaking. Yet I still feel I don't want to burden my own children when I cannot look after myself.

Things like this should never be for private profit companies.

It saddens me to see that the intention to ask for support for the rights of all elderly and vulnerable patients to receive good quality NHS health care, has become a battle ground about failing GP services. It has been self evident during this pandemic that care homes were not protected as they should have been. And as a result many residents died without the benefit of pain relief or medical care. It is also self evident that the elderly and vulnerable will be the losers in a health care system designed purely for a technological age of which they have no understanding or part. If you have an interest in ensuring the whole of society is catered for in any newly evolving NHS, please consider adding your power to "Silver Voices" on behalf of those likely to be left behind. Thank you!

I retired from nursing four years ago. Although there were matrons, they weren’t like the matrons many years ago who ensured all the nurses knew her patients and the ward sister knew all the patients on her ward. The ‘modern’ matrons have a very different role and I got to the point when I just had to give up it all up. I was appalled at the quality of patient care

Don't understand why doctors and dentists aren't back at work. I've gone back after being furloughed. I really need to see a dentist and a doctor since lockdown, but dentists not seeing anyone unless you're in constant pain (abscess or bleeding). Doctors appointment on the telephone in 2 weeks to be assessed (I guess this will not be the doctor).
No wonder accident and emergency is so busy

........doctors and dentists aren’t back at work.......

Doctors have NEVER STOPPED WORKING throughout the Covid19 pandemic. The ignorance among many Gransnetters about doctors is truly astounding.

It must have been very nice sitting around doing nothing whilst being furloughed. The comment that doctors haven’t gone back to work since Covid is earth shattering in its ignorance! The only doctors that didn’t manage to work all the way through are those who DIED as a result of looking after Covid patients.
