I hope this is legible. I often find Jeremy Paxman pompous and overbearing, but he sums up our politicians in some wonderful turns of phrase!

MayBee70 Tue 18-Aug-20 22:47:29

On the subject of Paxman does anyone else find it really annoying that when the bell goes at the end of University Challenge he doesn’t tell you the answer to the last question. Happened again on Monday.

EllanVannin Tue 18-Aug-20 22:54:26

He's getting old and past his job.

MawB2 Tue 18-Aug-20 22:58:51

No he’s not! grin
He can show the younger journalists and commentators a thing or two.

Chewbacca Tue 18-Aug-20 23:02:41

I agree that, for the most part he's almost become a caricature of an irascible old man but he's still got a fire in his belly where highlighting political failures and hypocrisy is evident. And he's not far off the mark in his summation of the current incumbents.

merlotgran Tue 18-Aug-20 23:12:19

Love Paxo. I very rarely disagree with him.

Beechnut Wed 19-Aug-20 07:36:31

It’s so he can ask the question in another show MayBee70 ?

Esspee Wed 19-Aug-20 07:47:40

I agree MawB2. His descriptions of Priti, Gavin and Boris are spot on.

Lucca Wed 19-Aug-20 07:53:40

How is he past it ?

fevertree Wed 19-Aug-20 07:57:36

He always sounds as if he is straining his voice. It is very irritating.

So I think he is past it for that reason. He has used up his lifetime quota of talking.

Gingster Wed 19-Aug-20 08:03:41

So true!

Gajahgran Wed 19-Aug-20 09:15:59

Another left leaning commentator. Paxman way past his prime thinks he knows all the answers because he is used to having them written down in front of him!

growstuff Wed 19-Aug-20 09:22:22

How right wing are you, if you think Paxman is left-leaning? hmm

Chewbacca Wed 19-Aug-20 09:22:47

He has used up his lifetime quota of talking.

That could be applied to so many talking heads in the media.

MawB2 Wed 19-Aug-20 09:24:15

Growstuff I did wonder gringrin !

Lucca Wed 19-Aug-20 09:27:49

At least he’s literate, intelligent and competent. Why should his age have anything to with it.
Hardly left leaning either !! However what he does do is recognise a poor government when he’s see it regardless of his political views which I wish a lot more people would do instead of blindly backing Boris purely because he’s a Tory.

Witzend Wed 19-Aug-20 09:29:03

I always liked his style. He so rarely, if ever, let politicians get away with not answering the question - no matter how many times they tried to slither around it like an oiled snake.

If it takes an irascible type to do that, so be it.

TwiceAsNice Wed 19-Aug-20 09:35:47

I love Paxman . He is intelligent, literate and on the ball. He’s written several books and has always been a good interviewer. I also love University Challenge and never miss it.

On another point I am a Tory voter and am very disappointed in Boris . It annoys me to admit that the government has been lack lustre in a situation where they needed to be top
form

Evoha16 Wed 19-Aug-20 10:37:37

I hardly think that any ‘intelligent literate and on the ball’ person would use the word ’twerp’ to describe this government -

midgey Wed 19-Aug-20 10:42:40

Evoha16 I cannot think of a better word to describe this government. The whole lot are useless and have proved it on so may counts. I cannot imagine what will happen to the country in the next four years.

merlotgran Wed 19-Aug-20 10:43:12

If you google the meaning of 'twerp' you will find that all the alternatives have already been used to describe the government.

Blinko Wed 19-Aug-20 10:48:40

Totally agree with the OP. We couldn't have a worse lot in power than we now have. I despair for the next four years.

trisher Wed 19-Aug-20 10:55:17

I do sometimes find Paxman irritating but this piece is funny, but at the same time a bit scarey. Just think these people are running the country.

Grandmafrench Wed 19-Aug-20 10:59:10

Hello. I'm Paxo - I can assure all of you that I'm not past it !!

Parsley3 Wed 19-Aug-20 11:12:12

Calling Johnson a man for simpler times is spot on.
