Another attack on lawyers

In response to the Prime Minister's speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Amanda Pinto QC, Chair of the Bar, said:

“It is shocking and troubling that our own Prime Minister condones and extends attempts to politicise and attack lawyers for simply doing their job in the public interest. Lawyers – including those employed by the Government itself - are absolutely vital to the running of our grossly under-funded criminal justice system. Their professional duty is to their client and to the court, and not to play political games.

“The proper application of the laws of this country is fundamental to the justice system and it is a lawyer’s task to set out the proper arguments to enable that to happen. Even the Home Secretary does not suggest that lawyers are hamstringing the criminal justice system.”

Johnson's speech referred to "lefty human rights lawyers and other do-gooders" and follows the pattern of the shameful "Enemies of the People" headline directed at judges upholding the law.

He's right in a way, given the case I've been following.

“ lefty human rights lawyers and other do-gooders"
Seriously what kind of thing is that for a PM to say

Free speech ?

I would imagine that Johnson thinks that doing good is a slur.

There's a difference between "free speech" and being the PM. "lefty human rights lawyers and other do-gooders" -absolutely shocking thing to say.
If he gets his way, we'll be heading the way of the USA with Judges appointed on the basis of their political views.

Lawyers are not political - anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know what they are talking about.

Lawyers operate the law of the land legislated by parliament.

They cannot work outside of those parameters.

Whitewave2 - absolutely. Lawyers don't chose who to represent, cases are allocated, the lawyer examines the evidence and works out the best way to present the case for their client, no matter who the client is.

Liberty may be the organisation the PM has in his/Dom's sights. But I suspect its another attempt to appeal to the bigots who expected Brexit to stop 'illegal immigrants'
