The Queen’s Honours List

It was good to see so many ‘ordinary’ people in the Honours list today, those who have helped so many others during this Covid epidemic with no thought for themselves, all very worthy recipients. Let us hope that this is the first of many lists recognising such contributions to society.

However, on a personal level, I was delighted to see that at long last Tommy Steele has received a knighthood. As a teenager I was a massive fan, as was my grandmother!

Many people seem to think he was just another pop star, but now aged 83, he is also a sculptor whose works are to be seen in Liverpool and London. He is an author, and has conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra. I believe he has both produced and directed shows and I think I read recently that he has just recorded an audio book. No-one could ever describe him as a one trick pony!

I never knew all that about Tommy Steele Lexisgranny; so much talent I wasn't aware of. It's nice to hear that his work and contributions have finally been recognised, so I'm pleased he got his gong!

I was hoping to see Jonathan Van Tamm on the list but suspect he's blown it by saying what we all thought on TV re Cummings travels!

I think you are correct about Jonathan Van Tam, and I suspect he knew that when he spoke out.
Very interesting about Tommy Steele.

Empire medals keeping the class system alive .Give the Doctors and Nurses a decent wage its more use than a medal

I loved Tommy Steele in my teens. Remember 'The Six Five Special, steaming down the line...' On Children's Favourites, his 'Little White Bull' was a frequent request. I wasn't aware of his subsequent career, but I'm full of admiration. ❤️

I remember seeing Tommy Steele at the Empire theatre, Liverpool, when I was in my teens. He was one of my favourites at the time in the 1950's and I thought he was so clever back then. A very versatile and entertaining man.
His recognition has been a long time coming behind all the wannabees half of whom I'd never heard of. Well done to TS.

I think it would have been really lovely this time to have had an honours list totally devoted to people who had given services to Covid in a variety of ways. We could have created a special award without Empire in the title and have given everyone the same award/ medal without the distinctions of a member/order/dame/ commander etc. We could also have had ‘institutional/organisational’ medals/awards that were given to the whole organisation that had made a contribution rather than always picking out an individual.

I'm a bit puzzled by this Honours List. Why now?

We have New Year's Honours and Queen's Birthday Honours, and we had some not so long ago for god knows what reason when some very unsuitable people were made life peers, but what is the occasion for them now?

This was the delayed Q’s birthday honours list from June. The last one when Johnson’s brother et al were elevated was the Dissolution Honours List - do keep up ?

Lexisgranny Sat 10-Oct-20 19:32:25

I have to admit to having an almost life size cardboard cut out ofTommy Steele in my bedroom. annodomini I have a wonderful memory of my Grandmother (in her mid nineties) humming a range of TS hits, and Little White Bull was her favourite. It seemed so odd for someone who musical tastes had been always been at the other end of the musical spectrum.

I do agree however that the Honours list seems to reflect the current trend in Junior school Sports Days, to hand out badges like lollipops so that no-one feels left out.

There are lots of every day folks on the list, NHS workers, food bank organisers and local fund raisers.

Marcus Rashford ????

NotTooOld Sat 10-Oct-20 21:22:07

Yes, I agree, good for Marcus Rashford. He deserves his MBE.

Good to hear about Tommy Steele, too. Not sure about Mary Berry being made a dame. Hasn't she just been lucky in reviving her career late in life?

MaizieD Sat 10-Oct-20 21:54:57

Is Mary Berry any less deserving than a former Marxist IRA sympathiser, the PM's brother, a retired cricketer or the son of a former KGB agent?

Or, come to that, a former failed CEO of Talk Talk who is now making an utter horlicks of test and trace?

MissAdventure Sat 10-Oct-20 22:11:18

I think they should have made some sort of posthumous honour for the medics who lost their lives.

suziewoozie Sat 10-Oct-20 22:21:44

MissA Yes - that would have fitted to in with my idea of having a separate COVID award/medal ( like we do for service in particular conflicts ) and then there could have been a posthumous section. I just find it distasteful really that people who bake cakes/act/ present tv programmes are in the same list as real heroes with the former getting ‘higher’ awards.

maddyone Sat 10-Oct-20 23:53:18

I totally agree suzie.

Don’t suppose ‘Little White Bull’ would be in the charts nowadays.

‘All the black bulls called him a coward just ‘cos he was white.
Only black bulls go in the bull ring, only black bulls fight’.

It was so innocent back in the 50’s, Tommy.

Jay of Jay's Pub Quiz has been awarded an MBE. We've been doing his online quiz every week since lockdown and it's kept our family communicating. Well deserved. He set it up by accident by forgetting to set his privacy settings on a quiz and it's gone global.
