It makes me so sad when people buy the line that 'we can't afford' this or that, when this debacle has shown that there is (and always has been) money sloshing about that could have been used to pay for so many things that would have transformed lives.
Pre-school funding, abolishing student fees, better pensions all round and compensation for all the women who lost out, feeding hungry children, operations done on time, a decent social security safety net, dentistry on the NHS, free (or very cheap) prescriptions, local services that have been cut to the bone, decent public transport - the list goes on and on, but every time we have been told that these things aren't available because the UK has no money.
Whether or not everyone would prioritise everything on my list of things that we could have spent taxpayers' money on instead of giving it to government cronies, I doubt that many could reasonably argue that at least some of them have a far better case for being a better use of funds.
