What is it with Labour city mayors?

Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool (Old Swan area) for the last 10 years was arrested yesterday for alleged criminal activity.

Our very own ‘chancer’ Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester overplayed his hand against the Goverment recently and came off badly. He’s so unpopular round here.

And Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, who is only hanging on by his fingernails owing to the delayed election process there is an out of touch lefty who espouses any ‘good cause’ whilst admitting he is ‘not providing proper leadership’.

They are all pretty useless.
Irrelevant too I’d say.

Maybe that’s why Joe Anderson agreed so readily to what the government wanted (on Covid) so as not to shine further light on activities there, shocking isn’t it?

MawBe Sat 05-Dec-20 10:18:06

What is it about people in power, end of?
Sorry to hear Andy Burnham is unpopular, I thought that he had a bit of a cult following (those eyebrows!) along with Dishy Rishi and everybody’s Covid hero Jonathan Van Tam

It doesn't sound good about Joe Anderson. I thought he has been popular with the Government until this.
I've always heard Andy Burnham is popular. He comes across as trying to fight for the people he represents.
Sadiq Khan is doing the best he can in London. TFL is losing money due to people not travelling during the pandemic, not because of mismanagement. The private train companies have been bailed out but TFL is being used as a political football.

Before believing what she posted, MawBe, I'd ask Ug what tory source she's copied and pasted from.

MawBe Sat 05-Dec-20 10:31:23

I assume Urmstongran is reflecting local opinion MaizieD - why assume any reference to “Tory” media?
It is her local area after all.

growstuff Sat 05-Dec-20 10:33:07

My impression is also that Andy Burnham is popular.

Maybe the question should have been "What is wrong with Liverpool mayors?" Derek Hatton was also arrested.

Or maybe "What is wrong with Joe Anderson and Derek Hatton?"

Sadiq Khan has been given a hard time by the following of a spectacularly useless former London Mayor, who hasn't done badly for himself.

PS. Khan and Burnham are metro mayors, not city mayors like Anderson.

I doubt it. She hasn't even been in the area since the start of lockdown. My daughter and her friends have and speak very highly of Burnham and what he tried to do.

Ug - it's the Tories who increased the number of Metro and City mayors so it's the Tories who are responsible for having created most of these "irrelevant" roles.

I hope you've told them in no uncertain terms that we don't need these mayors and to get rid of them.

While we’re here, what about the 3 Tory Mayors convicted of sex offences in 2018?
Simon Thornton, Godalming.
David Boswell, Pembroke.
David Jackson, Horley.

Crimes are committed right across the political spectrum. The title of this thread is a poor attempt at belittling an entire political class.

Living in Greater Manchester I think Andy Burnham is very popular and fights hard for the residents which he is mandated to do.
He should have gone further in National politics.

Urmstongran Sat 05-Dec-20 11:22:32

Oh stop it MaizieD. I haven’t copied and pasted anything!
Aren’t we allowed to have a conversation on politics without your sniping?

Urmstongran Sat 05-Dec-20 11:25:04

I watched the SKY news last night about Joe Anderson and I remember SK making that comment in the summer in one of the newspapers I’d read. ? The Guardian.
No direct quotes.

trisher Sat 05-Dec-20 11:25:26

I woud imagine your views on Burnham depend upon which area of Greater Manchester you live in. It's the poorest he is fighting for so maybe the better off don't like him.
Apparently Joe Anderson's arrest is to do with developments and bribery. One thing I can say for the Tories they do that sort of thing so much better. They just don't get caught.

And Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, who is only hanging on by his fingernails owing to the delayed election process

Do you have a source for this claim - genuinely interested, as pre-Covid admittedly that's some time ago, he was well ahead of Shaun Bailey, who is a very weak candidate for the Tories, IMO

What a rude reaction growstuff !
“Who’s “ she” , the cat’s mother?” as my mum used to say.
The news about the Liverpool mayor has widely reported nationally for a start, and whether or not a Metro mayor is popular is going to be a matter of opinion.
Your daughter’s and friends’ opinion is theirs Urmstongran’s hers- both are equally valid.
Or is this a sideways snipe at someone who was initially “stuck” abroad and opted, not unreasonably to stay there?
This is childish and unworthy of you

Urmstongran Sat 05-Dec-20 11:35:45

Thank you Maw for that.
I’m used to the digs now. They used to hurt but I’ve toughened up a bit.

Yes you’re right growstuff I wasn’t over here at the start of lockdown but that wasn’t my point anyway. Besides which, most of my family & friends live with the Gtr. Manchester area and have kept me up to date with happenings. Plus, let’s be honest, Burnham was on tv quite a lot most mornings wasn’t he? You couldn’t miss him for a while even if you tried.

Comments directed to Urmstongran are unfounded and say more about the posters than their intended victim

she = Urmstongran

Sorry you found that rude.

I actually find it "rude" that somebody who has been out of the country since the beginning of lockdown has the nerve to comment on Andy Burnham.

Not only that, but she has maligned two metro mayors by associating them with Joe Anderson, who has been arrested.

Urmstongran My daughter has been in Greater Manchester throughout all the lockdowns. You haven't. Your "news" and views are second hand.

I didn't need to try. I don't watch TV.

Don't gaslight me MawBe. I know what's worthy of me and you have no right to judge.

Your views growstuff are secondhand also through your daughter and her friends or am I missing something here. No different from Urmstongran views obtained from her family and friends.
