Avian influenza H5N1 warning

There are outbreaks of avian flu in wild geese I believe. Received a message from a bird watching group I’m a member of.

Sadly, some turkeys have already been slaughtered.

This happened exactly a year ago in Norfolk.

They were probably disposed of.
As both my husband and the newspaper pointed out that they were safe for consumption it seems such a shame.
We are supporting food banks and the like, people are hungry and we are destroying good food,
I suppose the logistics were too difficult to manage.

You can't catch bird flu through eating fully cooked poultry or eggs, even in areas with an outbreak of bird flu.

No humans have been infected with H5N1, H7N9, H5N6 or H5N8 bird flu in the UK – this includes the type of H5N6 virus recently found in humans in China. Plans are in place to manage any suspected cases.

H5N8 bird flu has been found in some wild birds and poultry in the UK. H5N6 has also been found in some wild birds in the UK but is a different strain to that seen in China.

We’ve had it identified in Northumberland in two wild geese I’ve read.

This is why we gave up keeping chickens four years ago. They hated being penned up so when they died of old age we didn't replace them.
