I lived there as part of a mixed race family 30 years ago. I've let my green card expire. No desire to go back. Had some terribly racist encounters there.

Racism is alive and well just about everywhere, unfortunately. I find it hard to comprehend how people can behave like that, but you don’t have to look far for examples.

It's hard to see people stand by when this happens. I know they are probably scared but there are several onlookers. I think I'd have to at least say something even if I was afraid.

Being a bystander is collusion in my opinion.

But with unfettered carrying of arms in the US how would you know that someone wouldn't whip out a gun and shoot you if you tried to intervene?

I think a few forum members are American, and some have children living over there, and surely most of us are not so insular that we have no interest in countries other than our own.

Too true MaizieD. Easy to understand why, in a country that has such a love of guns that even children are encouraged to learn how to load and shoot them, people walk on by for their own safety.

Erm, I thought that there was enough going on in this country to bother about what happens in an enormous country that can see to itself ?

What about Australia where racial tensions are rife where it's more likely that an Aborigine is wrongly arrested or killed to save the skin of a white ? Where police are armed and heavy-handed----towards particular groups ?
