This guy is a wine importer. He prepared, in advance, as well as he possibly could for Brexit.

He's not a happy bunny

Over the past 15 days I have not only been running my company as normal but I have been faced with largest threat to its future since it began in 1992. This is #Brexit & here is my thread on just how bad things are getting. 1/26
Six months ago my business started to prepare for Brexit. We obtained the following licences and accreditations JUST to maintain the status quo. EORI number, RORO badge for Chief, GBRC number, GBWK number, we already had ARWS and DAN accounts. 2/26
All of this took nearly five months a lot of form filling but on the 9th December this was all in place. So I would say whilst we knew Brexit would be a car crash we did not know it was going to be a multiple pile up in the fog with fatalities. 3/26
On January 4th I returned to work being wise enough to have stockpiled just enough so that if we had a bumpy ride in January we would have enough stock to last until February. 4/26
I should add this took a considerable amount of cash flow and management to do this during a lockdown/ pandemic combined with Xmas sales. But we managed. 5/26
I should add this took a considerable amount of cash flow and management to do this during a lockdown/ pandemic combined with Xmas sales. But we managed. 5/26
On my Return in January I started to use Chief for the very first time. It was not possible to use this system prior to Brexit or necessary as it was very simple to move stock in the EU with minimal fuss and delay with the EMCS system. 6/26
It’s fair to say it worked like clockwork after 40 years of tweaks to get the system just right. But in Brexit Britain we are very much on our own & so this British system (CHIEF) has now got every product the U.K. consumes in its grasp. 7/26
However the problem with CHIEF is that it was built decades ago and was never designed to handle EU imports too! Why would leave a system (EMCS) that works for one that does not? 8/26
A CHIEF declaration (C88) has up to 65 boxes to complete. Some of these are very simple like excise number and parties involved on the import. So basic stuff. Others however are very vague codes. 9/26
CHIEF is there for the Government to collect tax, that is its primary purpose. It’s not there to aid businesses. It definitely hinders business. On this point no debate is required. Most of the other boxes are codes that have zero meaning .10/26
Now unbeknown to me until January all hauliers use secondary software to over write onto CHIEF because is so hard to use. There is currently a 4 month waiting list for new installations of this software which costs £2K all in. 11/26
I have been imputing directly to CHIEF which I should add costs £157 per month to be able to access. Yes thats right folks you have to pay to tell the government how much your going to pay them. The first Brexit dividend. 12/26
Now after 14 days I finally complete my first C88 declaration but noticed I was paying the 3rd countries tariff. Odd I thought to myself I am sure just three weeks ago the U.K. signed an FTA with the EU to make all goods tariff free. So I used my contacts to find out more. 13/26
Now you would think that government would want to make using CHIEF as easy as possible as now there are millions of businesses having to use it. 14/26
So you would think that a call centre would be a good idea right? No wrong, this is the ONLY HMRC system where there is no number to call. Just an email with a 5 day turn around. Remember that when government say they are doing all they can to help. 15/26
So with the knowledge that government are not interested in making Brexit easy for businesses and in many cases businesses are just trying to survive, we have ploughed on regardless. 16/26
Again you would think if there is a FTA, CHIEF would apply it to all imports from that area/ country right? Wrong you have to claim it. Unbelievable! 17/26
Claiming a tariff free status was yesterday’s game with CHIEF. To be fair deep in the CHIEF files I found the notes to apply the codes to the system required (U 110 followed by AP for example) but problem is after triple checking, CHIEF has not been updated properly. 18/26
So once again I can’t import wine via my own means until I wait for CHIEF staff( normally five working days) for them to advise how to correct the problem and complete the declaration correctly tariff free. 19/26
So what does this all mean for the consumers? Well to supply the U.K. the exporter need to get a Rex document to prove the origin of their stock to the U.K. government (again, unbelievable). 20/26
Then with all the additional costs in Paperwork, time wasted, government fees to tell the government how much your paying them and delays in the supply chain it’s obvious price are upward bound. 21/26
So this is why I have been saying wine per bottle on retail will increase by at least £1 per bottle for mass market products, for niche small batch wines your looking at £1.50 or even £2.00 on the bottle prices. There’s another of those Brexit dividends. 22/26
This government have cocked up Brexit from day one. But I am now 100% sure that choice will reduce dramatically, price will increase dramatically, delays with increase dramatically and the U.K. wide depression is inevitable, and still the government couldn’t give a toss. 23/26
It’s why I will leave this country next year once my kids have finished there education. I am lucky and have a second nationality within the EU thanks to my father. 24/26
But for those that can’t leave I understand why you are angry and with what I can see your about have a lot more taken away from you than just freedom of movement. 25/26
The Tory party is no longer the Tory party. It is UKIP that has assumed control of the Tory party. They goal is clear, to commit economic vandalism and social vandalism on the U.K. whilst ensuring they get considerably wealthier. That is very sad for what was a great country.

END

How horrible for him and his business

Lucca Sat 16-Jan-21 18:03:23

“ This government have cocked up...”. I’d say that was one of the most commonly heard expressions in the last year.

Grandmabatty Sat 16-Jan-21 18:10:04

Fishing industry in Scotland is screwed.

An account of one man’s experience, frustrating though must be for him and probably some others until things settle down.

How about celebrating some GOOD NEWS ?

Today 3.5 million people in this country have already had their covid vaccination. Days ago our total was more than the whole of the EU countries combined!

Why not concentrate on the good, encouraging news rather than trawling through the internet to find something negative.

It can’t be doing you all any good, it really can’t.

Is that because of brexit then? Or just because Of separate orders?

I’d love to read good brexit news if you have some

What's that got to do with Brexit? Apart from being a distraction?

And why the gaslighting about what's good for people! People who voted to leave claim they knew what they were doing and, therefore, knew they weren't doing many people any good.

I didn't actually have to 'trawl through the internet'. It came to meet me. There's a lot more like this...

All agog to hear some 'good, encouraging news'. Do tell us...

Someone else never got to tell us about the 'new, exciting opportunities' Brexit offers; perhaps you can fill in the gaps, JE

EllanVannin Sat 16-Jan-21 20:15:37

There is no good news where Brexit is concerned which is why, once again, there was no forethought in 2016 of what a shambles it could turn out to be.
Why don't politicians ever look ahead ?

Lots f usinesses being decimated or destroyed with Brexit ,Bojo's answer in WM ..wasn't an answer at all it was just another attack on the democratically elected leader of the SNP who asked what he was going to do about the tens of thousands of pinds of seafood rotting on the quay.Of course JRM says they are HAPPIER FISH ..so thats OK then .Tell that to the families who wont be able to afford their bills!

Next time you eat fish, don't forget to ask if the fish was happy before it died.

So Operation Fear has become Operation Real. I too would be pleased to hear some positive Brexit news. Does anyone have any? I've looked and looked and can't find any.

As for positive Covid news don't let the excitement of vaccination hide the fact that 1295 people died of Covid on 16th January and that is still spreading and people are still dying.

I've just trawled the internet looking for positive Brexit news.

I found one piece. According to Rees Mogg the fish in our waters are happier because they're now British fish. Happy fish. Well that is good news.

geekesse Sat 16-Jan-21 20:53:29

JenniferEccles, you said ‘ Today 3.5 million people in this country have already had their covid vaccination.’

Not quite. The majority of them have had one dose of a two-dose vaccination schedule. Pfizer say that their vaccine has only been tested for effectiveness after two doses, three weeks apart, and advise against any longer time between shots. The Oxford AstraZeneca allows for up to a 12 week gap, but there is no certainty that it will give any lasting protection without a timely second dose.

In other words, it’s great PR to say that 3.5m injections have been given, but whether that translates into any meaningful immunity is doubtful.

Dinahmo Sat 16-Jan-21 21:12:10

Do we know whether they were vaccinations actually stuck in peoples arms or were they "offered" ? Earlier in the week Matt Hancock switched mid interview from "people having" to "people being offered"

I saw an interesting series of tweets yesterday. It went like this:

If you understand Brexit, you almost certainly can't understand why others don't understand Brexit.
It's a classic Catch-22 situation.
Simply put: they will NEVER have seen the sorts of information sources you have. So they literally don't know what they don't know.
Are they ill-informed? Yes, if we measure against reality.
Yet they could have consumed a vast amount of "information" from the tabloids, Farage, Brexiters, right-wing TV/radio personalities etc., and practically drowned in tweets and posts from like-minded folk on social media.
That's one of the main reasons why Leavers get annoyed if you call them ignorant. Many put in some effort.

(The other, of course, being that NOBODY likes being insulted.)

It's like training for a marathon when it turns out you were really up for rhythmic gymnastics.
Info bubbles are everywhere.
The only way to break out of them is to force your way out.

And the only reason to break out of them is if you know you're trapped in one in the first place. Which you're unlikely to if you're stuck inside it.
The information Leavers were fed in huge amounts was wrong, but it was consistently wrong. Key players all sang from the same satanic hymnsheet.

So it is too easy and too condescending to paint them as disinterested, or to claim "they should have known because it was obvious".
Be honest...

How often do you read the Express? The Daily Mail? The Sun? Do you make a point to regularly follow what someone like Farage is saying, in detail?

Maybe you monitor them all the time. But that makes you the exception, even among Remainers.

Now flip it around.

That's why the "Project Fear" label was so damaging and effective.

If every information source you're used to is telling you a single consistent message ("Them lot are just scaremongering") how do you know - I mean, actually KNOW - that's not the case?

Honest answer: you don't.

The single biggest guilty party is the BBC, if only because they tower over all others in terms of breadth of media coverage and audience reach.

Their insistence that all Brexit stories must have two "sides" nurtured the myth that it was all just opinion anyway.

Now, maybe, somewhere, there is a bubble full of Brexit Good News but we're just not in it...

MayBee70 Sat 16-Jan-21 21:21:36

Didn’t someone from the BBC say the other day that they didn’t expose Johnson’s lies because it undermined people’s trust in politicians?

MaizieD Sat 16-Jan-21 21:29:02

OMG, Maybee. That was a while ago, Thanks for reminding me. Of all the gobsmacking things I have heard over the past year or so that has to qualify as an absolute knockout!

It was Peter Oborne who reported that it had been said to him. However, the BBC denied it...

Dinahmo Sat 16-Jan-21 21:41:11

The BBC have a fact checker on Politics Live and I have often heard him point out that something Johnson said was wrong. I don't think that he used the word "lies" however.

Dinahmo Sat 16-Jan-21 21:44:13

Maizie Thank you for your two long posts. Both made interesting reading. I'm sure that the wine merchant's comments were correct so I don't understand how some people posting on GN have found completing the paperwork to be simple and straightforward.

DD (a research biochemist) is at work tonight filling in the forms she needs to export some seeds to the EU. First off the government website sent the code for her to log on to the wrong person. Then it let her log on but told her her current permission level doesn't let her access the system. Then it decided she could use it but she couldn't find the forms!

She has to fill in two forms, but one of them is in two parts so she is charged for three forms. Then there is a charge for the site visit, a charge for the lab tests and a charge to issue the certificate. Last year it cost them an envelope and a stamp!

I have a weekly delivery from Sainsbury.

I have never had difficulty in getting seasonable vegetables, but have noticed that week after week I am unable to get fresh produce of the variety that I ordered.

So the items so far are.

Swede
Leeks
Cauliflower

Such common items but so annoying, when I’ve bought the other ingredients for a recipe.
Even the frozen cauliflower is sold out.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 21-Jan-21 08:20:42

Not sure where you are WW but we went to our local farm shop yesterday and purchased cauliflower, swede and leeks (favourites here) , also had cauliflower and leeks in last home delivery.

MawBe Thu 21-Jan-21 08:21:28

Must be bad luck - I had an Ocado delivery yesterday evening, with all three, the swede (or as I would say “neep ”) all ready to have with my McSween haggis on Burns Night!

Urmstongran Thu 21-Jan-21 08:24:30

We got a beautiful cauliflower yesterday in Sainsbury’s to eat with our roast lamb. Veg aisles were fully stocked too - plenty of choice!
