They don’t help themselves do they?

I can hardly believe I’m going to post this but does anyone else find it hard to believe that Harry and Andrew who actually saw active service for Queen and country are to wear suits for the funeral rather than uniform? I understand why this decision has been made and I think it stinks quite frankly - designed to humlitate. I don’t know why they’re not wearing sackcloth and ashes actually - petty, vindictive, what a lovely family they are.

Oh, please, suziewoozie. This is not a State Funeral.

I think that the RF are trying to make it low key, as Prince Philip wanted and are being careful not to breach covid regulations. There is absolutely no reason why Harry and Andrew should wear uniforms at what is essentially, as far as they can make it, a private family funeral (which they can't avoid being made public).

What is bugging me is Bloody Boris claiming that he was invited but stood down to make space for a family member. I'm sure that is yet another of his barefaced lies. I would think that the RF must be deeply relieved that covid regs made it impossible to invite him...

Sorry you’ve missed my point - uniforms are being worn by others apparently so not low key. I agree about Johnson lying again - it’s his default position so always a safe position to take.

MaizieD Mon 12-Apr-21 11:37:46

Sorry to have missed your point. I confess I have taken no interest at all in the details of the funeral so not aware that others might be uniformed . I think it's a bit stupid if any of them are intending to wear uniforms as it doesn't seem to me that it should be that sort of affair.

Elegran Mon 12-Apr-21 11:43:52

Well, if they don't have the military honours, they don't have any right to wear the uniforms. It isn't imposed on them specially to humiliate on this occasion, it is part of their overall position.

If they DID wear them, then it would set a precedent for anyone else to wear full uniform whether they had any right to it or not. It would become Ruritanian fancy dress, to be worn by every Tom Dick or Harry who wanted to look macho and sexy on a public occasion, and lose all significance. It would also lose all the point and power of stripping an errant soldier of his rank.

Alegrias1 Mon 12-Apr-21 11:49:40

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I don't believe former or retired service people are allowed to wear their uniforms any more. The ones who still have military appointments, can wear their uniforms.

They might wear their medals?

Lillie Mon 12-Apr-21 11:51:29

I think they can still wear their medals with their suits?

Oldwoman70 Mon 12-Apr-21 12:01:42

A quick Google search reveals:

Full Uniform (which includes headdress and cap badges), may be worn on specified official occasions by ex-servicemen, providing the letter 'R' depicting 'Retired' is worn, is provided at individual expense, and agreed in advance,on request, by the relevant MOD department.

Also the Queen can give permission for uniform to be worn

Aveline Mon 12-Apr-21 12:03:10

Will the funeral be televised? I hope not. Mainly because I dont want the poor Queen and close family having to put a brave face on as they know that every glance will be analysed and lip reading experts will be on stand by.

Peasblossom Mon 12-Apr-21 12:04:22

It has nothing to do with spite or humiliation, but is the correct protocol for the wearing of military uniform. It would apply to ex-service man attending a funeral. Medals and bars can be worn.

It was the protocol followed for my ex-father-in-laws funeral.

It only appears differently to those who want to see it that way, for reasons reasons of their own. Perhaps petty and vindictive ones??

Anniebach Mon 12-Apr-21 12:07:58

Andrew and Harry do not have any connections to any regiment now.

EllanVannin Mon 12-Apr-21 12:10:40

Does it matter what they wear so long as they're there ? It wouldn't matter to me if I was their mother.

Smileless2012 Mon 12-Apr-21 12:10:57

As far as I'm aware you're right Alegrias. They will be able to wear their medals as any other former or retired service personnel.

It has nothing to do with seeking to humiliate them suziewoozie. It may be that if they were to be in uniform, going against protocol that those who retain the right to wear their uniforms would be offensive.

You say you understand yet start this thread anywayconfused.

I'm all for 'Pomp and Circumstance' but then it's not up to the public is it.? The wishes of the deceased and family must surely come first.

Looking this up, it seems nowhere near this straightforward. From what I’ve read, they could wear them with the Queen’s permission. Happy for a link - I can’t find just one that sums it up.

Understanding why a decision is made does not equal approving of it or that it’s not up for discussion does it?

Well they have life long connections to the units they actually served in

PRINCE HARRY is reportedly set to wear a suit to Prince Philip's funeral after recently being stripped of his honorary military positions for quitting his royal duties.

You have evidence for this?

Smileless2012 Mon 12-Apr-21 12:20:26

If you understand why the decision was made, why then accuse the RF of making the decision to humiliate them?

suziewoozie Mon 12-Apr-21 12:21:17

Sorry Old I missed your post. Yes you seem to have found the same source as me about with the Queen’s permission. Thanks. In that case I stand by what I first posted - it’s mean spirited not to let them as they actually were involved in active service - like PP

If you understand why the decision was made, why then accuse the RF of making the decision to humiliate them?

Because they could allow them to wear them

Just a lifetime of experience ?

Anniebach Mon 12-Apr-21 12:23:57

Are they not allowed or have they chosen not to.

Aveline Mon 12-Apr-21 12:29:28

And your lifetime if experience trumps that of other people? It's a mean-spirited guess.
