GB News will attempt to shake up the broadcasting landscape when the news network launches its TV channel in early June.

The news service, spearheaded by veteran broadcaster Andrew Neil, has announced plans to go live on Sunday June 13.

In a tweet, the channel said it would launch at 8pm with a special programme, 'Welcome to GB News'.

I can’t wait!

Excellent post Alegrias
We are firmly in 'Pick a Side', no critical thinking required territory

So will this programme contain all the intellectual dishonesty we usually see from the hard-right?

Will there be the standard self-serving and covering the propaganda with the fast-fudging we see so often from this country's small group of extremists? What proportion of whataboutery, straw men and dead cats will we see or will they just not allow any intellectual honesty? I would also expect the kind of competitive debating that nearly killed democracy in the US. After all, it's all about the "winner" isn't it? The audience of such a programme doesn't expect a debate of different ideas to lead to understanding if not agreement. Goodness me no. That would mean no winner!

And someone must always win. Will they be voted off the programme if they don't I wonder. Let no one admit they may be wrong - or worse still that is not their area of knowledge or, the worst sin of all - wear the wrong clothes. They will surely be kicked out without a thought.

No, those who want to watch can look forward to cheering the dodging of the actual topic, the sneaking round the truth, the unaccountability of opinion, the personal attack to distract and the sudden ending because "we have run out of time". Since when did time run out?

I think there are a few on this forum who have been honing the craft of the dodgy debate for some time - perhaps they can get a job with this company - what was it called again? No, seriously, don't tell me. I cannot think I will have any need to know, thankfully.

The Coast Guy is a dick

Probably because he says he is Scottish yet proud to be British too Aleggrias? As in, being part of a bigger family. Whereas you are polar opposite and want independence, so not surprising you don’t like him.

Alegrias1 Mon 14-Jun-21 08:58:50

No, he really is just a dick.

Saw him speaking at a book festival a few years ago about his latest book. Thought to myself, "He's a dick."

I'm getting quite embarrassed at my own use of language now....grin

Sorry, forgot to add that he told the Sunday Herald that the lockdowns were the biggest mistake in world history. Not a great supporter of people being paid to stay at home and not work (what the rest of us call "furlough").

See, a d***

BlueBelle Mon 14-Jun-21 09:10:50

Farage a breathe of fresh air you ve hit new lows umstrong he smells but it ain’t fresh air

Talullah Mon 14-Jun-21 09:17:50

It's tripe.

Urmstongran Mon 14-Jun-21 09:53:16

the lockdowns were the biggest mistake in world history

He said last night the first short lockdown was appropriate. We had no vaccine and the fear at the time was overwhelming the NHS. No, not to much. He was concerned about the effect on people’s well being, freedoms and mental health. Sensible chap.

Urmstongran Mon 14-Jun-21 09:55:56

We wouldn’t have got Brexit without Farage. He also knows much about the mindset of the EU BlueBell more than you or I. I like to listen to him but I respect and understand that you don’t.

The biggest mistake in world history

Not appeasing the Nazis, not Suez, not the Scramble for Africa or invading Afghanistan, no. The man's an eejit. Take a look at his twitter, its a gem. He re-tweets George Galloway!

The biggest mistake in world history
Australia- complete lock down-910 deaths
UK- Late and inadequate lock downs- 128 thousand deaths

He rarely put in an appearance at EU meetings so how does that make him more knowledgeable about it than the rest of us?

Bigger than the Holocaust? Or maybe he thinks that didn’t happen.

varian Mon 14-Jun-21 10:41:07

UG is right for once when she says we wouldn't have got brexit without Farage.

It is also true that we wouldn't have got brexit without the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation relentlessly promoting Farage.

He appeared on Question Time no less than 29 times in the years before the fraudulent referendum of 2016 and he always got a good response from the QT audience who were carefully selected by former UKIP member Alison Fuller Pedley.

vegansrock Mon 14-Jun-21 10:54:18

Andrew Neil’s registered address is in France. Just saying. If you are interested in news of East Midlands airport, Teeside roads, Alan Sugar’s knee operation this is obviously the channel for you. Yawn.

henetha Mon 14-Jun-21 10:59:05

I settled down to watch Dan Wooton, who I rather like, at 9pm last evening and fell sound asleep for almost an hour. So when I went to bed at 11pm I couldn't sleep, so am feeling very cross this morning.

NannyC2 Mon 14-Jun-21 11:41:37

Great, another channel at last and opportunity for debate which we haven't had.
I have not watched any of the old media, particularly the BBC news. My husband and I watch UK Column news who are more factual.

BlueBelle Mon 14-Jun-21 11:43:33

Sorry if this is rude but I believe anyone who thinks Farage is knowledgable and fairminded is deluded
We would have unfortunately got Brexit done without him and it will become clear in time as being the biggest mistake Britain has ever made

Alegrias1 Mon 14-Jun-21 11:44:32

Well I expect UK Column makes GB News look quite left wing and balanced.

suttonJ Mon 14-Jun-21 11:51:23

UG…isn’t that what balance is all about?
I don’t understand your hilarity.
In ‘balance’ terms, I see this as a lurch towards a Fox News style venture. But (wearing ‘balanced’ hat), I accept I have to put up with it.
All part of life’s rich tapestry. But glad I am free to choose the Beeb.

I agree that Farage is not knowledgeable

I agree that Farage is not fairminded

I agree that brexit is the biggest mistake we have ever made

But I disagree that brexit would have inevitably happened without Farage

Bigger than the Holocaust? Or maybe he thinks that didn’t happen

There are plenty of Holocaust deniers and I’ve noted anti semitism on this forum before. Hey ho as a Jew I’m resigned to it. It is interesting though how so many members of this forum describe any view that differs from theirs as far right. You have no idea and it’s so lazy.

varian Mon 14-Jun-21 12:18:56

I think most of us understand that the horrors of the Holocaust are at the extreme end of rightwing politics.

We all see other opinions in relation to our own. There are members of the Labour Party who seem to regard Keir Starmer as "far right" which is abject nonsense.

However I think there is a real concern about the recent rise of right wing populism in many countries in the world because we have seen what that can lead to.

GillT57 Mon 14-Jun-21 12:42:49

I didn't watch the opening episode of GB news, not a big fan of Andrew Neil although I do admit he tackles politicians rather more robustly than many other interviewers which is good to see. So, are the GB team going to get anyone of interest or importance on there? Cummings, Schapps, Patel? I would like to see any of those given a grilling. However, anything where the guest list has Alan Sugar, he of the abrasive, backstabbing programme The Apprentice, or any of its contestants, or Farage, is likely to not be on my list.

Alegrias1 Mon 14-Jun-21 13:31:56

I watched a bit of Andrew Neil's opening statement (I'm a glutton for punishment) In it he talked about being the voice of those who have been side-lined, ignored etc.

Given that they are avowedly right wing, that we have a right wing government in charge and the right wing Brexit project is chugging on, who exactly are all these ignored people?

It sounds to me very much like the kind of propaganda that made people in the first half of the 20th century think that they were the victims, that "they" were out to get them.
