Did you watch his interview with Piers Morgan?
What did you think?

blondenana Tue 01-Jun-21 22:48:06

Yes I did.at least I tried but son rang me for ages,so.missed some of it
I like Keir Starmer

Urmstongran Tue 01-Jun-21 22:54:37

No.
I wouldn’t vote for him so I didn’t see the point. A bit of an irrelevance to me.

Like programmes about the Royal Family (I’m never going to meet any of them) or gardening programmes (I don’t have one). Or baking (I just dont).
?

Ellan Tue 01-Jun-21 23:01:31

Ah, nowt like keeping an open mind urms

MayBee70 Tue 01-Jun-21 23:03:31

Well, it was very similar to his Desert Island Discs which moved me to tears. But I am biased in that I rate Keir very highly. I’ll be interested to read what other people think.

MayBee70 Tue 01-Jun-21 23:04:51

Oh, and members of my family have met him and have also been very impressed. This has been in a business setting.

Ellan Tue 01-Jun-21 23:10:58

I also found his story moving Maybe70

mokryna Tue 01-Jun-21 23:24:11

Don’t usually watch this program but pleased I did as I found it very interesting.

Lilypops Tue 01-Jun-21 23:27:01

I like him. He came over as very caring, humble , and a devoted family man, stays true to his values, he had a hard time with his parents especially his Mother who had bad health for years.
I think he is very grounded and with his career as a barrister which makes him see both sides, Now he needs to prove himself as a worthy labour leader ,

Grany Wed 02-Jun-21 00:24:26

Boring.

MayBee70 Wed 02-Jun-21 00:33:49

Oh dear. No affairs, no abortions, never been sacked. How awful. He really must up his game mustn’t he....sad

Galaxy Wed 02-Jun-21 07:45:25

I think he is a decent man. I dont know if that is enough in current times.

lemongrove Wed 02-Jun-21 09:30:57

I echo what Galaxy has said.
A decent man, but that doesn’t always translate to a good leader or good PM.
He needs time to prove that, and tbh he does have time.

henetha Wed 02-Jun-21 09:35:04

I recorded it. I'll watch it later.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Jun-21 09:38:48

What a comment on our society, when people wonder if a man with high integrity, competence and the ability to make difficult decisions in the teeth of opposition is not considered right.

Instead we have someone who fails at every level, except the ability to waffle, play to the gallery and lean the way those with the loudest voice say.

Iam64 Wed 02-Jun-21 09:38:52

I’m planning to watch on catch up.
I saw Keir Starmer at the leadership hustings. He was the stand out candidate. As well as answering questions clearly, he came over as intelligent, emotionally as well as academically. His comments about his family were memorable.
I hope the Morgan interview is watched by a big audience

Galaxy Wed 02-Jun-21 09:47:52

Oh no I think he would be a good PM , it's just I think we are at a stage that doesnt value the strengths he has.

Urmstongran Wed 02-Jun-21 09:56:59

Well Starmer supported Corbyn. Who supported the Russians over Novichok. The IRA over British soldiers. In fact, just about any anti British movement going. Plus he didn’t recognise we had voted for Brexit and tried his best for a second referendum.

Yes he seems a good chap. But that’s not enough for me to be interested in him. There’s a lot of decent individuals about but I’m not interested in their personal life stories either.

Actually wasn’t he DPP during the Rochdale (and other towns) taxi driver grooming gangs scandal? That was pretty shocking.

Devorgilla Wed 02-Jun-21 09:57:51

I watched it too and found it very moving and a great insight into the man. I think we will see a Labour leader emerging, with valid Labour policies. I have heard him speak before at a fund raising dinner and voted for him as leader. Politics is not normal in this country at the moment but it is starting to open up again and Keir will be out there campaigning and inspiring us. I think a lot of the 'Red Wall' voters will recognise his childhood experience in their own, or their parents' life. His father's approach to life certainly resonated with me from fathers of my friends who never, or rarely, told them they loved them but did so by the way they provided for them. A 'get on and do' attitude, which I also saw with the single mums whose children I taught.

JaneJudge Wed 02-Jun-21 10:04:48

We watched it and I personally thought it was depressing that people want to vote for someone they like or is deemed popular as that appears the obvious motivation for the interview. He seems a nice enough bloke but I don't feel I need to know what he did at university apart from his qualifications.

Do stop parroting right wing propaganda, Ug.
In fact Starmer worked to rectify mistakes made by the DPP to try to ensure that it didn't happen again.

Also with the Savile inquiry.

Try fact rather than fiction.

^ but I don't feel I need to know what he did at university apart from his qualifications.^

From eulogies on Gnet about Johnson's intellectual abilities (2:1 from Oxford) it seems that many voters do care, JaneJudge.

EllanVannin Wed 02-Jun-21 10:22:06

Not impressed I'm afraid.
When he was director of public prosecutions he let down many by not prosecuting those responsible for the Rochdale grooming and also John Worboys for the further sexual assaults that were known about. He was an absolute failure in this position that was supposed to protect the public.
How he became leader of the Labour Party I'll never know.
He even helped Saville avoid prosecution when he served with the DPP.

Sorry folks-----he doesn't get my vote !

Read about the Rochdale grooming gangs and form your own opinion.

Do you never read other posts, EV. Have a look at the links on my post at 10.13 and please stop repeating rubbish...

Yes, I know - I just personally find it depressing that he has had to do this. 'People' care more about liking him than what he represents and stands for. I remember in the Hartlepool elections seeing a previous Labour voter (a vicar) saying she was going to vote Labour as she didn't know who Kier was or what his voice sounded like or what he stood for, which is why I think this would have motivated him to this interview. I am quite able to switch my tv on at midday on a Wednesday and watch my blood pressure rise and I can read but there are plenty of political programs on tv. I just wondered why people wouldn't know? Sorry I do realise this is a bit of a ramble blush
