RNLI and Farage

I am finding it difficult to get my brain around the concept, that there are people in this country who would rather let a world wide respected maritime organisation see people drown than save them.

I just hope that Farage criticising them for doing their job ensures that they have the best year yet from donations.

They are an amazing organisation, and let's face it the volunteers are doing something much more worthwhile than Farage. I think their response to this has been spot on. I donated straight away smile.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 29-Jul-21 09:54:10

I’ve actually just read that there has been a massive surge in donations???.

Blossoming Thu 29-Jul-21 09:57:09

They receive no public funding so they can’t be made to go against their principles by threats of withdrawal. Farage is a deeply unpleasant person.

And remember, not all lifeboats are RNLI run. The one on our beach is privately run by volunteers so I buy cards and toys from them as well as donating.
Great people doing a great job!

MoorlandMooner Thu 29-Jul-21 09:58:48

It's interesting to see which companies choose to advertise on GB news whilst Farage is spouting his twisted nonsense opinions. If support these views do we support them?

MoorlandMooner Thu 29-Jul-21 10:00:44

Apologies. Should read 'if we continue to support these companies are we supporting Farage's views?'

Ellianne Thu 29-Jul-21 10:00:44

Stupid Farage. Lifeboats rescue whoever, wherever, whenever.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 29-Jul-21 10:02:08

The RNLI does sterling work on the Norfolk coast near me. Recently went out to rescue an exhausted dog which had got out of its depth, which I thought was wonderful. Very brave and selfless people, so many of whom have died trying to save others.

Callistemon Thu 29-Jul-21 10:06:56

People I know here work hard to raise funds for the RNLI even though we aren't that near the coast - many of them are in their 80s but still enthusiastically fundraising.

There can't be any who wouldn't support them but now we've found another one one.
As I said previously, if I post what I think should happen to them my post would be deleted.

Let's hope Farage digs deep into his pockets for a donation to the RNLI by way of an apology.

MayBee70 Thu 29-Jul-21 10:07:42

It just goes to show how out of touch Farage is when he doesn’t realise how loved and respected the RNLI are in this country.

Lucca Thu 29-Jul-21 11:13:33

Against my better judgement I’ve just watched the clip of farage ranting on Gb news. (He said frankly four or five times by the way!) He even brought a dig at Harry and Meghan wondering if the RNLI were using the same PR firm…
Odious man.

Teacheranne Thu 29-Jul-21 11:23:42

I only give money to two charities at my door, the RNLI and in Christian Aid Week because of personal connections. I donate to others through direct debits or after one off appeals. The RNLI is one of the most worthwhile organisations I know. I would be appalled if they did not respond to help anyone in danger on water.

Forage needs to take a pop at the French for the way they deal with migrants in boats.

Lucca Thu 29-Jul-21 11:25:32

“ Forage needs to take a pop at the French for the way they deal with migrants in boats.”. Oh he does that, obviously.

25Avalon Thu 29-Jul-21 11:38:15

Like him or not Farage has improved the viewing figures for GBNews overtaking Sky.

Wasn’t there some criticism a couple of years ago that the RNLI had sacked staff here but were funding ventures in other countries. I seem to remember people cancelling their donations.

The lifeboat did go into French waters to rescue the people on the boat. Why aren’t the French doing more to stop this, and why are the traffickers getting away with it? The police I.e. you and me the tax payer have bought loads of little boats to stop the traffickers from buying them, in this country might I add, to stop them profiteering from migrants. We need to stop migrants from illegally leaving France in the first place, but we can’t blame the RNLI for rescuing people in distress.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 29-Jul-21 11:49:08

Johnson has given the French £50million to help control our borders????.

Alegrias1 Thu 29-Jul-21 12:14:36

One of my Facebook friends thinks we should just requisition all the boats on the French coast to stop the migrants using them. Its like we've gone down a bizarre rabbit hole.

3 cheers for the RNLI. ???

JaneJudge Thu 29-Jul-21 12:18:22

I know this is quite unfeeling of me...but can Nigel swim?

MayBee70 Thu 29-Jul-21 12:36:43

Well, he’s full of hot air so would probably float….

HolySox Thu 29-Jul-21 12:48:22

Maybe Farage has a point...

God bless the RNLI for saving people whatever but unfortunately unscrupulous people may be taking advantage of them, essentially putting more lives in danger!

Seems the French should be doing more to protect their people.

GillT57 Thu 29-Jul-21 12:49:56

Well as a result of Farage and the moronic people who support him, I have just sent the RNLI a donation. I must check again which companies are advertising on GB news as I will be buying anything from them until they stop.

Dinahmo Thu 29-Jul-21 13:01:24

I have posted this elsewhere on here but for those that haven't read it here is the UNHCR report on asylum in the UK

www.unhcr.org/uk/asylum-in-the-uk.html

As regards deaths, 1400 were reported in the Mediterranean in 2020 and 6 reported to have died and 3 missing in the English Channel in 2020. This shows what good work the RNLI are doing but there are also Italian boats in the Med doing search and rescue.

The fact is most refugees are entering into Europe via N Africa or Greece (currently the most beleagured) and finding their way into northern Europe.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 29-Jul-21 14:10:34

Just as a bit of fact. The UN rules that refugeesDO NOT have to stay in the first country they come to.

It is a GLOBAL RESPONSIBILTY.

Chardy Thu 29-Jul-21 14:22:14

Some who doesn't normally send more than a couple of Christmas cards says they'll be sending many RNLI ones this year!

Alegrias1 Thu 29-Jul-21 14:32:57

I've just watched his rant, at least I watched 2 minutes. What on earth was he thinking? And it all comes down to money, in his mind, those poor businessmen on the South Coast who keep being called out to save lives, how must their businesses be suffering?

I can't believe anyone falls for this rubbish, surely. If they do, what kind of people are they?

Too many question marks, I know...
