Don’t underestimate this u-turn

Johnson is, as reported in the FT yesterday a.m. going to issue “temporary” visas for lorry drivers from Europe.

The media will play this down, but the implication of this humiliation was not lost on the cabinet who were totally split on this decision as they understood the optics of this u-turn and how it will play out in the U.K.

They know that leaving the single market has never been voted on by the British public, and a return would undoubtedly be welcomed by the vast majority. Leaving the single market never made any economic sense as can be seen by the chaos continuing to spread throughout the economy.

Holding the line was extremely important to the Brexiters and this crack is very unwelcome indeed, who argued for continued chaos rather than do something they swore would never happen again.

Rely on migrant Labour.

They were wrong and are wrong on so much more.

You have to deal with things as they evolve, you cannot pre judge every situation, so many promises made are found to have weak links somewhere, you have to adapt.

Josianne Sat 25-Sep-21 07:10:23

Yes, wrong maybe, but they have to start making amends somewhere. A step in the right direction at least. I agree Allsorts.

Millions of people were aware that limiting freedom of movement would result in a shortage of people to do essential jobs.

If we all knew, why didn't they?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 25-Sep-21 07:48:44

Of course one wonders if after the disgraceful behaviour of the Home Office the migrants will say “on your bike”

Josianne Sat 25-Sep-21 07:53:08

I often think migrants doing these jobs must privately feel pretty puzzled why the country can't find enough workers of their own. To me the emphasis needs to switch.

The best compromise would be for us to remain outside of the EU club, but re-enter the single market and Customs Union.

That would take care of all the chaos including staff shortages, stock crises, price rises, help business etc.

The ERG and their ilk will do all in their power, which I imagine is considerable, to stop anything like this happening. They will blame it all in the pandemic and refuse to accept that Brexit was always a disaster waiting to happen. Johnson will mumble and grumble and ultimately refuse to do anything concrete, because his position would be at risk.

The Eastern European workers that I know well enough to have proper conversations with (all between 30 and roughly 55) say the British are lazy. One of them wished they could be lazy too as they felt guilty if they didn't give 100% and said that sometimes they feel really tired. One said "hard work is a badge of honour".

They all seem to be very diligent workers. These are the people who have been doing the jobs we don't want to.

I wonder if we were ever thought of as hard working? If so, what happened.

If only!

Have you read the book co-wrote by Raab, and Patel?

You’d like it.

“Cast your mind back to the run up to last Christmas. Remember all those European drivers who were kept here in their cabs without food, water or toilets by the UK authorities. Some never made it home for Christmas. If you were one of those drivers, would you be rushing back here?”

Twitter.

I didn't vote to leave the EU (I didn't vote to stay, either, as I could see pros on cons for both) and I didn't vote to join in the first place.

I know that much of the process hasn't been handled well but I, for one, have no desire to rejoin a group where, I feel, we've never been welcome and where the 'one size fits all' system of regulations simply doesn't fit all.

There were always going to be teething problems with the leaving process, Covid hasn't helped, but it does seem there was a distinct lack of foresight.

Whoops: pros and cons

Not sure what to think about this:

gringrin???

I'm afraid reading a book by Patel is not on my to-do list!

The media will play this down

What evidence, ahead of the event that this will happen?

Surely you should have an open mind and judge events as they come. You also need to consider that others may not see this event as being as humiliating or as significant as you do.

I am not offering any opinion on this subject at all at the moment.

Lilypops Sat 25-Sep-21 08:41:09

White wave. Yes I remember that fiasco last Christmas. Disgraceful. Those poor drivers were treated very badly by the authorities. I am sure they won’t be rushing to take those jobs again. Who would. What a crazy world we are living in ,
I went to get petrol yesterday. The queues were everywhere, I will not queue , I am not stockpiling. The half tank will just have to do , I can walk or get the bus. At least I don’t need it to get to work or take kids to school like some do ,

MaizieD Sat 25-Sep-21 08:44:55

where, I feel, we've never been welcome and where the 'one size fits all' system of regulations simply doesn't fit all.

There are an awful lot of struggling, failing or failed EU focussed businesses as a result of this national lunacy. I think they'd consider your 'feelz' to be rather less important than earning a living and giving employment to others.

(Your assertions are untrue, anyway)

Alegrias1 Sat 25-Sep-21 08:49:22

We'll be told its not a u-turn, that this is an example of us being able to target immigration to suit our requirements at any time, that this is exactly what "the people" voted for, and it wouldn't have happened without Covid, wasn't that unlucky?

And the credulous Eurosceptics will believe it hmm

Septimia Sat 25-Sep-21 08:53:14

MaizieD, have you never wondered about the Common Agricultural Policy? How can you have one system when the climate, soil conditions, farming structure and crops etc. vary so widely across the EU?

As for earning a living, leaving aside the problems of training HGV drivers, there are job vacancies but also people who would rather not take them because they involve hard work.

Ah, the lazy Brit trope.

Is that you Dominic?

maddyone Sat 25-Sep-21 09:04:51

What I'd like to know is why aren't there enough people in Britain to do all the jobs? It's a genuine question, not a political point by the way. I voted remain, I never had any problems with European people coming here. They offered a lot of skills and definitely worked hard.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 25-Sep-21 09:06:04

Someone living in Germany has said that the chaos has made headline news in the German television etc. They have no such chaos.

The only factor they do not have in common is Brexit.

So the logical conclusion is that Brexit is unfolding exactly as predicted.
