Misogyny

Dominic Raab is unbelievable. He doesn’t seem to understand what misogyny means! As a person educated at Oxbridge I would expect him to have some understanding of the English language. It makes me wonder why these elite schools and universities actually teach.

Urgh Early, urgh! sad

trisher Wed 06-Oct-21 18:38:10

It's obvious that Dominic is where he is because our PM needed someone thicker and more inclined to gaffes than himself in cabinet. He couldn't have another Rishi behind him could he?

varian Wed 06-Oct-21 18:49:57

Johnson is the arch-charlatan. People like Raab are the second rate followers.

Scones Wed 06-Oct-21 19:55:42

Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence (Oxford) Master of Laws degree (Cambridge)

Either the subject of misogyny didn't come up once or Mr Raab wasn't listening.

If you read some of his articles about how men get a raw deal from the cradle to the grave you can understand how he might be tone deaf any time anyone mentions the misogyny word.

JaneJudge Wed 06-Oct-21 20:10:34

it sounds like had a terribly raw deal, poor man

Galaxy Wed 06-Oct-21 20:21:50

I think it's even worse. It's not that he doesnt understand the word it's that his automatic reaction to the word is but what about the men.

No chance of him knowing what misandry is then!

Where is our GN expert on misandry when we need him?

Galaxy Wed 06-Oct-21 20:27:39

Banned. Thank God.

Galaxy Wed 06-Oct-21 20:27:56

Allegedly.

Scones Wed 06-Oct-21 20:32:42

This is the measure of Dominic Raab.

The Telegraph. 2011

Dominic Raab criticised equalities chiefs for ignoring “flagrant discrimination” against male workers, claiming that men were now getting a “raw deal” in many areas of life.

The 36-year-old MP for Esher and Walton made his remarks in an article on the Government’s plan to extend paternity leave for new fathers, saying that this was an area in which the last, Labour government had let men down.

He suggested that, like the feminists who burned their bras in the 1970s, men should start “burning their briefs” to draw attention to discrimination against men.

In an article for the PoliticsHome website, he called for more family-friendly policies rather than those to promote female workers, saying: "While we have some of the toughest anti-discrimination laws in the world, we are blind to some of the most flagrant discrimination – against men.

"From the cradle to the grave, men are getting a raw deal. Men work longer hours, die earlier, but retire later than women.

I thought you meant Dominic Raab when I first read that.

No such luck?

Maybe Laurence Fox could drive him out into the middle of nowhere forgetting there was a petrol shortage or something

It makes me wonder why these elite schools and universities actually teach.

Mainly, how to perpetuate unearned privilege.

You mean the scientists, medical professions, engineers, yes all those privileged people. Or is it just some politicians you take aim at.

Strange, I know people in all of those categories and none of them went to elite institutions. AND they all managed to vote for Labour in the last election.

Strikes me, GG13, that the SOLE reason for those educational establishments is to perpetuate unearned privilege.

Jaxjacky Wed 06-Oct-21 21:30:43

I’ll admit I wasn’t aware of the word misandry until I read it on here some months ago, I’m very aware of the actuality, similarly misogyny.
I was quite disappointed in myself for not knowing the word as I considered myself pretty aware and rounded, but useful to know, I didn’t go to university. smile

"It makes me wonder why these elite schools and universities actually teach." Hopefully, ayse, such establishments teach their students to read over what they have written before clicking 'POST MESSAGE'; or did you really mean "why" rather than "what"? And before anybody else piles in with the usual rants against private schools, may I point out that Dominic Raab attended a publicly-funded grammar school.

There is no need to be rude! I had to go out to provide childcare so ran out of time.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask that those who have had the privilege of going to elite universities should understand the meaning of words that they use.

Extremely rude, seeing that you corrected that error in the very next post. grin

Perhaps people should read all the posts before dashing off snide messages...

I am prepared to suck the sludgy remains out of my petrol tank into a can and bike it round to Fox so that this can happen. I believe that symptoms of a RaabidFox include mental confusion.

Words fail me.

Words- or Raab’s understanding of them- certainly failed him on this occasion gringrin

Some of Johnson's views about women:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/oct/06/tottymeter-and-girly-swots-how-johnson-shows-women-respect

Scones Thu 07-Oct-21 09:29:03

If we think the things Johnson says about women are shocking we're going to be pretty appalled when we read about the ways he has treated women in his private life!

Johnson's refusal to make misogyny a hate crime reminded me of Queen Victoria thinking lesbianism wasn't real.
If I don't see it it doesn't exist.

The reason they don't see it is that they were raised and live in a world where misogyny is endemic and has benefitted them.

Deedaa Thu 07-Oct-21 09:57:27

An important thing to learn if you are going to do any sort of public speaking is only to use words if you are certain of their meaning!

I would argur with him anyway about classing misogyny as just an insult. It can be manifested in much nastier ways.

Callistemon Thu 07-Oct-21 09:59:33

I don’t think it’s too much to ask that those who have had the privilege of going to elite universities should understand the meaning of words that they use.

Perhaps misandry is a word which is a recent invention by men for men to use when they are accused of being misogynistic.
Perhaps the word didn't exist when Raab was at that elite university.
"Anything you can do, I can do better
I can do anything better than you"

In fact, perhaps it was a recent Gransnet invention!

(No, I don't need an explanation of the etymology of ^misandry ?)

winterwhite Thu 07-Oct-21 11:53:28

I admit I didn't hear it but I think he just tripped over his words.
Far far more serious things to worry about emerged at that conference.
