One of the most chilling pieces of news I have read, on so many levels

Despite making a statement that the Taliban has banned public execution until a higher court's order, in a shocking turn of events, it was learnt that the Taliban millitants allegedly beheaded an athlete of the Afghan junior women's national volleyball team. According to a report by Independent Persian, the Taliban slaughtered Mahjubin Hakimi, a member of the Afghan women's national volleyball team who played in the youth age group in Kabul. One of the coaches of the Afghan women's national volleyball team confirmed that the athlete had been killed but said that no one other than the athlete's family knew the exact time and manner of the incident. Mahjabin played for the Kabul Municipality Volleyball Club before the collapse of the previous Afghan government and was one of the club's most successful players. A few days ago, pictures of Hakimi's severed head circulated on social media which was the prime evidence of her killing. The coach further said that only two of the team's players was able to escape from the country before the Taliban ushered control in August. Mahjabin Hakimi was among the many other unfortunate women sportspersons who were left behind

Namsnanny Thu 21-Oct-21 14:52:06

Sorry posted too soon.
......because no one else can.

Kalu Thu 21-Oct-21 14:53:40

What a deplorable act. ?. What her parents are suffering with this knowledge unimaginable. Poor, poor girl.

Aveline Thu 21-Oct-21 14:54:05

shock that's so awful. Women's and girls worst fears illustrated. The Taleban are truly evil.

WHY?
They're not saying she was beheaded because she was in the team so I wonder if she'd infringed some other petty rule?
Whatever the reason its barbaric.

No other "crime" I'm afraid.
For a woman to play a sport is against the fundamentalist "teachings" of the Taliban.
The threat of execution merely for being sportswomen was why the Afghan National Women's team sought sanctuary in the West finding it in Portugal.

Blossoming Thu 21-Oct-21 15:41:35

This is appalling news unsurprising.

Daisymae Thu 21-Oct-21 15:53:48

That's absolutely horrific. That poor girl, now all the others in similar situations must be living in terror.

Callistemon Thu 21-Oct-21 16:21:38

This is just dreadful news.
Barbaric, medieval, bloodthirsty men now rule.

I weep for the women and girls of Afghanistan.

How could we have left them to suffer like this? Whatever we may have thought of our presence there, things are far worse now and will get even more terrifying.

?

PollyTickle Thu 21-Oct-21 16:38:29

Barbaric act. A tragedy for that whole country. Can we in the west really stand by and let this happen. Can we?

I find it so incredibly sad that the Taliban commit their atrocities in the name of their version of God. The God I know would never condone their cruelties and barbarism. I know there are a lot of atheists on Gransnet, who will mock me for my beliefs, but I truly feel that the Taliban are carrying out the work of the devil even if they're not consciously aware of that.

Poor girl. Her poor family. And how much it must be a hell on earth for all the women who had satisfying careers and now have to hide at home covered up in black from head to toe 365 days a year. Can you imagine the mental health problems you'd face being forced to go from being a neuro surgeon one day to a mere possession of a man the next? (just an example)

LullyDully Thu 21-Oct-21 17:35:36

I also think most right minded Muslims would not believe that God would condone this .What a wicked, bigoted bunch these Taliban are.

LullyDully Thu 21-Oct-21 17:39:35

I suppose it may be a bit of propaganda....just a thought.

Jabberwok Thu 21-Oct-21 17:43:12

Well I certainly wouldn't be mocking you poshpaws . I am, I'm afraid, a somewhat lapsed High Anglican, a "Doubting Thomas" if you like! but the Taliban version of God bears absolutely no resemblance to any God that I did, and still do up to a point , acknowledge. I just can't believe the mentality and extreme cruelty of these appalling people. The devils work indeed.

TerriBull Thu 21-Oct-21 17:47:16

Such a shocking story sad those poor women and girls their suffering is unimaginable. All the progress in the field of women's rights, just swept away in days.

Urmstongran Thu 21-Oct-21 17:47:39

Barbaric act. Medieval punishment meted out by men.

I just wish the mullahs would speak up over here and condemn these acts. Impressionable young men become radicalised and their spiritual leaders need to step up and condemn these atrocities. They are too quiet for my liking.

lemongrove Thu 21-Oct-21 17:54:54

If true it’s unspeakable.
What a nightmare it’s suddenly become for women ( and some men) in Afghanistan.

tickingbird Thu 21-Oct-21 18:00:56

I seem to recall an oh so woke and caring member of GN - a regular poster - claiming this new Taliban should be afforded some respect when the withdrawal was taking place. Sickening.

Complicit by their silence…

God help them.

There's a God in all this carnage???!!!

Jabberwok Thu 21-Oct-21 18:15:38

Yes Urmstongran , how silent these Mullahs are! Complicit, the very word! Believing in God is a tough challenge and that's the truth.
