More Brexit lunacy

£490 million wasted spent on changing the colour of our passports. Which we could have done at any time in the last 30 years. Burgundy wasn't obligatory; not every EU country has a burgundy passport.

How many more £millions is this futile Brexit exercise going to cost the UK?

Somewhat ironic that the new blue is very similar to the colour of the EU flag...

jura2 Fri 22-Dec-17 14:22:05

Yiiikes - and what is worse- is that Brexiters think it is wonderful and that it is so worthwhile to sabotage and ruin our country for this ....

Beggars belief.

Christinefrance Fri 22-Dec-17 14:30:48

I think the new colour will only be introduced as old passports expire so no excessive cost involved . Don't think the different colour will sabotage the country. I am not a 'Brexiter' so no axe to grind.

jura2 Fri 22-Dec-17 14:41:08

Of course Christine, it is NOT the colour of the passport that will sabotage or scupper the country ...

MaizieD Fri 22-Dec-17 14:56:54

It seems the £490 million has already been spent, Christine

British passports to go back to 'iconic' blue following £490million redesign after Brexit, ministers confirm

Jalima1108 Fri 22-Dec-17 15:02:40

Well, mine runs out next year so I presume I will have a red one, valid for 10 years?

Jalima1108 Fri 22-Dec-17 15:03:58

Why should it cost that much? confused
Surely they haven't got that many covers in stock? How much does a cover cost?

Jalima1108 Fri 22-Dec-17 15:07:41

From your link MaizieD:
Bergundy passports have been used since 1988
why didn't they just write red if they couldn't spell burgundy? grin

MaizieD Fri 22-Dec-17 15:39:05

grin

MaizieD Fri 22-Dec-17 15:45:50

Oh look. They're probably not even going to be made in the UK shock

Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis cannot promise that new blue passport will be made in UK @BBCr4today though the security bits he says are all added in UK

durhamjen Fri 22-Dec-17 15:56:52

The S*n called it a "stunning victory".
Over what?

MaizieD Fri 22-Dec-17 18:29:28

Over the EU, presumably.

Who couldn't actually give a monkeys what colour our passports are...

suzied Fri 22-Dec-17 18:34:36

This is such b*llcks. It won’t be the same as the old one anyway , it will be same size etc as current one. Croatia (Eu member) has blue passport. Nigel Farage wetting himself as it’s the first victory etc. My application for Irish passport will be in soon, along with thousands of other Brits. Plenty of actual important isssues to get worried about.

MamaCaz Fri 22-Dec-17 18:36:22

That's me, Maizie grin

Luckygirl Fri 22-Dec-17 18:41:10

Redesigns are all the rage. Our LA, who cannot afford proper care of the elderly, r3egularly rebrands itself - such utter rubbish.

Can't see why it was necessary to change the passports in the first place when we joined the EU.

maryeliza54 Fri 22-Dec-17 18:49:10

We didn’t have to change the colour back then but we had to have a passport that was compatible across the various security machines etc. Passports are much more difficult to forge now ( obviously not impossible)and so have been evolving anyway and would have even if we hadn’t joined the EU.

MamaCaz Fri 22-Dec-17 19:02:07

I get a bit annoyed sometimes about the dismissive 'first world problem' comments that keep cropping up on lots of threads but really, when it comes to the colour of our passports, I am tempted to say it myself!

jura2 Fri 22-Dec-17 19:07:31

oh yes

maryeliza54 Fri 22-Dec-17 20:18:13

People who think the colour of your passport matters tells you everything you need to know about Brexiteers

whitewave Fri 22-Dec-17 20:20:17

We didn’t ever need to change the passport covers, nothing said we should. What nonsense it all is.

Primrose65 Fri 22-Dec-17 20:29:47

But the £490 million is the value of the contract to design and print all the passports for 11.5 years. At 6 million passports a year, that's just over £7 per passport.

If that's outrageous and you have the capability to create 6 million passports a year, perhaps you should start a company and respond to the tender next time.

I think it's a pretty reasonable cost.

whitewave Fri 22-Dec-17 20:34:59

Does anyone think that one day they will wake up and all this utter lunacy will fade into a horrible memory? I do as every day brings something even more ridiculous.

durhamjen Fri 22-Dec-17 20:46:42

Primrose won't.

Primrose65 Fri 22-Dec-17 20:49:57

I think the utter lunacy is people getting so carried away with Brexit bashing they think it costs nearly half a billion to redesign a passport cover.

lemongrove Fri 22-Dec-17 21:01:44

We only need to change our passports as they expire, so it will happen slowly, and at no extra cost for us.
May as well have a different colour if we need to have new passports, dark blue is as good as anything.
