What do you think about Boris Johnson's pronouncements regarding the investigations into historical sexual abuse?
Does the attempted clarification of facts to establish the guilt or otherwise regarding a long dead politician or celebrity need to be pursued, as there can be no trial or any meaningful result for the abused, or should we be using that money to help fight knife crime and protect people today?

yggdrasil Thu 14-Mar-19 12:06:05

Rosina:^ or any meaningful result for the abused,^

You can't know that. Just having it acknowledged could help. The effects of abuse can last a lifetime

Anniebach Thu 14-Mar-19 12:09:19

Haven’t read the statement from Boris

I don’t agree with the dead being judged for crimes , everyone must be allowed to defend themselves, the dead cannot

trisher Thu 14-Mar-19 12:12:55

I don't think it was just the celebrity investigations Boris was criticising. He said "One comment I would make is that I think an awful lot of the money, an awful lot of police time, now goes into these historic offences and all this malarkey - £60m I saw was being spaffed up the wall on some investigation into historic child abuse and all this kind of thing
I watched the revelations about the abuse at Medomsley young offenders institution. The stories were horrendous and I can't see how anyone could deny the boys who were abused the right to see prosecutions and acknowledgement of their suffering. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-47258310
It may also be that the prosecutions will prevent any others from imagining they are free to do as they wish because they have power over others.
Mind you as far as Boris goes perhaps his attitude is the result of his education- private boys school????

Luckygirl Thu 14-Mar-19 12:13:11

It would be nice if he used some statesman-like language. "Spaffed up a wall" hardly qualifies.

Parsley3 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:28:54

Apparently the word 'spaffed' is a slang term with a sexual meaning. Surely a well educated person like Boris would know that it was inappropriate to be so crass.
With regards to spending money to investigate historical crimes, some countries do have a time bar and it might be worth introducing that here.

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:44:44

He used the words ‘malarchy’ and ‘spaffed up the wall’ which means ejaculating up the wall. In the context of child abuse all the words used an utter disgrace and another clear signal if one were needed that this man is totally unfit for any office including that of MP. I won’t join in what should be a serious discussion when it was ‘inspired’ by these comments made as they were by a thoughtless, egotistical, self serving, entitled, well documented liar.

Nicenanny3 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:45:33

I agree with Boris the money could be better spent fighting knife crime.

Framilode Thu 14-Mar-19 12:47:39

Well Boris is certainly an expert on spaffing.

Kerenhappuch Thu 14-Mar-19 12:49:19

I think the phrase 'spaffed up a wall' represents his education and class. It was ill chosen, but presumably this is the way he talks in private among his peers.

He was hardly a model of financial prudence when he had charge of the Mayor's budget, buying useless water cannon and spending out huge amounts of money on the Garden Bridge vanity project. Trying to clarify past events for victims is a much better use of money in my opinion.

Anniebach Thu 14-Mar-19 12:55:34

This isn’t about Boris and his education

Should millions be spent on allegations against the dead ?

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:55:52

And he was being interviewed on national radio which is proof positive of how self absorbed and entitled he is - no respect for anyone and free to say what he wants when he wants.

Lily65 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:57:29

I can't believe he uttered those words......That's terrible.

Lily65 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:58:48

Thankfully I am not a victim of sexual abuse. I imagine people must want answers/closure/ to be heard. I think all those dead or alive should be investigated.

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 13:00:18

* ab* it’s evetything to do with BJ and his class and education. He said it for cheap political advantage and anyone who believes otherwise is deluded. We shouldn’t dignify his filthy use of language with serious discussion. I can just imagine your reaction if JC had used that language in that context - but BJ is a Tory and thus beyond reproach for you I guess

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 13:01:57

And ab FYI ‘historic’ does not necessarily equal ‘dead’

nanasam Thu 14-Mar-19 13:02:43

Oh, Boris, you really should put your brain in gear before opening your mouth shock

Anniebach Thu 14-Mar-19 13:06:09

Then why take part in a thread about comments made by
Someone of class! And educationmaryeliza . And snipes about my political views is so playground.

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 13:07:11

But so accurate

Anniebach Thu 14-Mar-19 13:15:27

No, the very opposite

crystaltipps Thu 14-Mar-19 13:15:56

I agree if this had been a Labour politician making such a crass comment there would be more criticism - remember how outraged some people were when JC called May a “stupid woman”. Yes it’s horrible, inappropriate language, victims of child abuse in the past should be able to have their experiences listened to and the perpetrators brought to justice, if possible. Should people not have spoken up about Jimmy Saville? Surely such knowledge helps us prevent future victims. It shouldn’t be either /or - we should put adequate resources into crime prevention.

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Mar-19 13:24:19

There are three distinct issues here - a national figure using language like that in public on nationwide radio, secondly using it in the context of child sexual abuse and thirdly the issue he pretended to care about/ use of resources. He couldn’t give a flying fig about abused children or appropriate use of resources - he’s a man child who’ s incapablr of realising that his hopes of leadership have been - well- one could insert his phrase here

TerriBull Thu 14-Mar-19 13:27:47

"Should people not have spoken up about Jimmy Saville" I agree crystaltipps allegedly a lot knew what he was up
but either willingly or were coerced into turning a blind eye due to his charity work, a tacit nod seemingly as if that somehow mitigated his wrong doings.

Allegedly David Steel knew what Cyril Smith was up to but didn't suspend him shock

TerriBull Thu 14-Mar-19 13:28:22

up to

trisher Thu 14-Mar-19 13:28:37

I didn't know what "spaffed" meant. He's just slipped lower in my estimation.
Anniebach if someone has suffered abuse as a child but only speaks out in adulthood it is very possible that their abuser will be elderly and may die during the investigation. Are those people not entitled to know that the abuse has at least been properly investigated?
