Why Barnard Castle

copied and pasted but please read In 2012 GlaxoSmithKline were fined $3 billion for fraud, overcharging and making false claims about medicines in the USA. In 2016, GlaxoSmithKline were fined £37.6 million in the UK for bribing companies not to produce generic copies of their out of patent drugs, thus overcharging the NHS.

Despite the fines, these frauds were still massively profitable for GlaxoSmithKline. A perfunctory search on the company brings up similar frauds and fines it perpetrated in South Africa and India. All this within the last decade. I cannot find any information that anyone was jailed, or even sacked, for these criminal activities. It is absolutely astonishing that such an habitually criminal enterprise carries on serenely in the UK. And what is particularly interesting today is that it carries on its crooked activity from its massive manufacturing and research base in Barnard Castle, County Durham.

On 12 April Dominic Cummings was seen in Castle Barnard during lockdown. Two days later, GlaxoSmithKline of Barnard Castle signed an agreement to develop and manufacture a Covid-19 vaccine with Sanofi of France.

Of course, that could be coincidence. As a child I lived in nearby Peterlee and I know families may go to Barnard Castle just for relaxation. Even when that is illegal. But GlaxoSmithKline Barnard Castle has been working 24/7 during the coronavirus crisis including the weekends. It was working.

The government’s extraordinary refusal to confirm or deny Cummings visit to Barnard Castle appears to make little sense if he just went there for a walk.

But surely if he was discussing Covid-19 vaccine business on behalf of the government, that would answer all the critics of his trip, would it not? They would want to trumpet it from the hills? I mean to believe otherwise, you would have to propound a crazed conspiracy theory. You would have to believe that criminal activity may be occurring again involving GlaxoSmithKline of the kind which might lead to fines of 37.6 million pounds for overcharging the NHS, or of three billion dollars for fraudulent medical claims in the USA. Nobody sane believes that kind of thing, do they?

I really do make an effort not to believe conspiracy theories, but the direction this country has been heading over the last few years, I don't think anything much would surprise me.

paddyanne Sun 24-May-20 23:30:34

seems a huge coincidence ...

paddyanne Sun 24-May-20 23:31:44

seems quite a coincidence ,maybe lockdown is causing my mind to go into overdrive,,,

MaizieD Sun 24-May-20 23:51:29

He was reported as being seen with his wife and child. But I suppose they could be regarded as 'cover'?

MaizieD Sun 24-May-20 23:55:22

Actually, it perhaps depends on where he was seen? Smith, Glaxo Kline site is a bit out of the centre and not in a place where one would go for a walk.. Certainly not 'beside the Tees' where one person reported seeing them.

Archaeology professor says she has seen him more than once in Barnard Castle ,no mention of his wife or child ,she says the whole town knew he was back and forward .It just seems a bit convenient that do,Wonder if Bojo is in for a cut of the profit?dgy dealing were happening there and now he pops up

mary51 Mon 25-May-20 06:58:04

This sounds like another crazy conspiracy story. I couldn't give it wouln't give it credence for one minute!

mary51 Mon 25-May-20 06:59:26

That should be 'wouldn't'

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-May-20 07:02:57

I wouldn’t go with this simply because if the government are dealing with Glaxo they would not make personal visits, especially not a spad. It doesn’t work like that.

Ginny42 Mon 25-May-20 07:06:38

Who knows how any of this 'works' any longer? They are making and breaking all the rules.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-May-20 07:09:31

True.

ApparentlyJohnson is welcoming refugees from Hong Kong to Britain. Nor sure how Patel will cope with that

Why does the Cummings story matter? And what does it obscure? The real story is the huge transfer of government assets to private companies that he is overseeing under cover of a pandemic while restructuring the Cabinet Office into his & @michaelgove's private fiefdom

Does this tie in?

furret who knows? Who knows the truth these days. Buggered if I know.

Maggiemaybe Mon 25-May-20 08:05:03

It sounds a bit of a stretch that if someone were furtively visiting the facility they’d be walking round the area risking being seen before or after the event. Straight in, straight out from the car with the beanie pulled well down, surely?

As WWM2 says, this isn’t how things are done anyway. And isn’t the GSK HQ in London?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-May-20 08:08:48

Yes it’s west of London. My DD works for them.

dragonfly46 Mon 25-May-20 08:24:10

I am not sure we can believe unsubstantiated reports that he was seen on a number of occasions in the area. There are a lot of men with bald heads around.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-May-20 08:26:26

I think the police have in fact substantiated some of the reports dragon

growstuff Mon 25-May-20 08:35:24

GSK also has a site in Ware, Hertfordshire. Some senior jobs were moved to Barnard Castle a few years ago. The Ware site remains one of the major manufacturers of asthma inhalers in the world.

Sir Andrew Witty was once the CEO and a director of GSK.

Not sure if that has anything to do with anything, but quite interesting.

Daisymae Mon 25-May-20 08:36:05

Actually nothing would surprise me.

dragonfly46 Mon 25-May-20 08:37:34

Ww2 the police have only said he was at the house not the various sittings around the county.

growstuff Mon 25-May-20 08:38:46

It's smoke and mirrors on an unprecedented scale.

sodapop Mon 25-May-20 08:43:02

Interesting hypothesis Paddyanne I await further information on this,

growstuff Mon 25-May-20 08:50:45

My personal feeling is that it's a red herring. GSK/Sanofi is one of AstraZeneca's rivals in the race to develop a vaccine. If any of the pharma companies can come up with something, there'll be big money involved. Meanwhile, their share prices are on the rise.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 25-May-20 08:51:10

No dragonfly it has been confirmed by the police that his car was seen in Barnard Castle
