It does seem that a Trumps re-election isn’t going to be a shoo-in, and that will muck up the U.K. plans for a deal with the USA.

Border plans will also effectively cut Northern Ireland off from the mainland.

We had no business to be part of a vote to leave the EU. It's screamingly obvious that this country can't function without the backing of Europe and all that it stands for.
We're a multicultural society so what difference does it make to have the foreign backing of those countries that are a part of the EU ?

This pandemic has shown proof that we NEED a United Europe in every way.
It's going to create more mayhem than any pandemic and I couldn't blame other countries if they're going to make things awkward for this country----I hope they do ! The backlash will be something that we'll rightly deserve.

It's the EU who have built up a lot of deprived areas in this country and have brought about employment so who's going to do that now ? With what this pandemic is costing the country there'll be nothing left in the kitty to further any more progress. The worst thing that we could have done was to leave the EU, it'll be put paid to any trading that we've known.

ev yes I think that is right, and C19 and the experience of Brexit has made the EU more determined in its collective endeavour to cooperate as a team of nations.

Of course there will be 6 months where existing rules will apply, we will all be able to bring booze and cigarettes for personal use as we do now. No doubt we will want to take advantage of that concession before it gets stopped, but it’s not smuggling.

Commercial goods will go through the existing process, so I don’t see why smuggling would be more or less of a problem, except for Ireland.

Just how they are going to stop Northern Irish residents bringing illegal goods across the Irish Sea has not yet been agreed. As there will be no land border with the south a sensible solution would be, “you cannot take advantage of any concessions at home but you can’t bring it across the Irish Sea”.

That would suit the Irish, north and south, commercial goods get declared, mostly. Personal use carte blanche as it is now, the best of both worlds.

In my previous life I had a lot of dealings with smuggling and border issues.

Truss is right. It is a charter for smugglers.

It does not need to be a Charter for Smugglers but checks will be needed. The border crossings between Switzerland and the EU work smoothly, sometimes you get stopped sometimes you don’t, (we did). Commercial goods go through separate channel’s and get inspected. Once the rules are established it will be routine but not everyone will like it that’s for sure.

What Truss is saying is that there isn't enough time to work out any systems. International laws need to be respected if the UK wants anybody to buy from us. If nothing's in place by December, nobody in any country will buy anything manufactured in the UK. It really isn't just about smuggling a few hundred cigarettes and a couple of bottles of whisky.

When do the personal allowances come back into play - Jan 2021 or July? I assume the limits will be similar to how they were before we joined the EU.

There were personal limits long after we joined the EU/Common Market. I can't remember exactly when they were lifted. Was it 1992?

Genuine duty free goods were actually cheaper than some of the items bought with lower foreign taxes.

I really do not understand this, but remember that the powers that be to join in a procurement schemme for PPE at the start of the pandemic .

I fear that covid19 will be used as the excuse for the economic disaster that is looming. Nobody predicted covid19, but many predicted the problems with Brexit and they were shouted off the stage. Meanwhile, I have read today that there are talks of trade deals with Turkey which may well involve freedom of entry to Turkish citizens........did I dream it or was this one of Farage's scare mongering stories about 3m Turks rampaging into the UK? I keep hoping that I will do a 'Bobby Ewing' and wake up in the shower one day to find that the past four years have been a very bad dream.
