Lots of discussion recently about racism in Britain and racial profiling. Interesting article that describes it as a part of life for some!

I wonder how many GNetters would describe themselves as BAME. I am not one, but I think it would be valuable to have their input on this.

I am aware you were talking about People who are black, that is obvious!!!! Clearly the points being made in the clearly expressed article are being ignored.
.

My point was it remains a generalisation ..turned round, the same could be said of white people ...except ofcourse all the statistics show that it is black people that this particular type of incident happens to based on their colour, not white people.

It is still a shocking generalisation!!

I won't join in either a pointless argument or the rudeness of "Duh" though.

rafichagran Tue 04-Aug-20 19:06:28

Good grief Ellanvanning you post is disgraceful, my long term partner is West Indian and if anyone referred to him as a Black I would have something to say about it.

I honestly feel based on how similar threads have gone, but some people really think that it’s either made up, or Black people whining to get “better” treatment than white people

biba70 Tue 04-Aug-20 19:28:59

have you seen the leaked footage from the policeman's own camera on Floyd's arrest? Truly shocking -he was terrified, begged for his life and no aggressive behaviour on his part.

BlueBelle Tue 04-Aug-20 19:29:36

My word ellenvallin well that shows you up what a nasty post shall I tell you what started it all well 400 years ago when people were ripped from their own country to make white men rich and has never ever gone away
You really need to think before you speak

Riverwalk Tue 04-Aug-20 19:29:57

Every black

blacks

white people

SueDonim Tue 04-Aug-20 19:47:06

The linked article in the OP is so sad. He has little hope of change. sad

My breath is taken away by Ellanvannin’s post. How crass to talk about ‘every black‘ as though speaking of a dog. And to imply that only ‘lovely’ blacks are acceptable. This may be news to some, but humans comes in all varieties, good, bad and indifferent. We should not hold some to different standards just because of their skin colour.

EllanVannin Tue 04-Aug-20 19:59:40

How sad that you all purposely misconstrue my post. If you had an ounce of sense you'd realise what I meant !!

To say nothing what I think of you lot !!

I am BAME. Racism has affected my life, from being only one of two mixed race children in 1950s otherwise all white schools, to different treatment in shops. I am not a very confident person, and some people's reactions to me have further eroded my confidence. I have experienced quite a few incidents, some major but mostly minor. I am able to discern how racist someone is as soon as I meet them - there are no need for words. It is the frosty tone of voice, the cold look, the dismissive attitude. It irritates me when white people accuse bame people of exaggerating, or 'playing the race card' as generally, this doesn't happen. A white person, by definition, can't experience the racism directed at a black person. Someone will jump in here and tell me that racism exists in the white community too - travellers, Eastern Europeans etc, and of course I accept that. It will be the same experiences as I have had. The 'black lives matter' trend is helping to nudge things in the right direction, but my own opinion is that you can change how people choose to express themselves, it try to keep their racist views hidden, but unfortunately you can't change people's internal thoughts. That will take generations, if it happens at all. I know that sounds pessimistic, but I am a realist.

MawB he was a lovely North West broadcaster who died on Saturday. I had no idea he was ill and neither did a lot of other people, but he carried on broadcasting. I thought he was on holiday as he'd been off air for a couple of weeks, until it was all on my local news yesterday that he'd died in Bury Hospice.

MaizieD Tue 04-Aug-20 20:12:38

Tony Morris was a north west TV presenter. Those of us who don't live in the NW are hardly likely to have known much (or anything) about him, EV, nor who Rowetta Satchell is.

EllanVannin Tue 04-Aug-20 20:14:12

The world would be a beautiful place with more like him, but sadly it's lost a gentleman who was the world to his wife and daughters.
If only more were like him !!

Madgran77 Tue 04-Aug-20 20:14:55

rafichagran Quite right too!

Summerlove I agree!

Bluebelle Exactly!

Sue Donin You are so right about different standards!

It is sad! I think he expresses the problem very clearly, eloquently and intelligently!
It seems to me that the issue in this article is related to racial profiling ...ie. assumptions (often subconscious) made on the basis of a persons colour ... so querying the first class ticket in this article. The black businesswoman who is assumeed to be the cleaner! The question mark on a black person being the genuine owner of a fancy car, also in this article. This sort of stuff is a way of life for some. .Cleaners are an important part of the workforce but the point is when an assumption is made that a black woman has to be the cleaner then that is sub conscious racial profiling. Just as the first class ticket checking is! Unconscious bias is another name for it.

I had never heard of him.

Fenella12 thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences. I hope that George Ffloyd's legacy is that change comes. Difficult conversations need to be had and we all need to call out racism in all cases. Change can't happen while we pass by on the other side.
EllanVannin you claim to be misunderstand, perhaps on such a sensitive subject you could take more care and consider how easy it is to hurt others.

I remember reading about this instance which, like so many others, beggars belief.
Edward Enninful, the first Black editor-in-chief of the British edition of fashion magazine Vogue, has said he has been subjected to racial profiling more than once. The most recent instance was in July at Vogue owner Conde Nast’s London offices, when a security guard told him he had to use the loading bay to enter the building.

“As a Black man it’s not the first time I’ve been profiled, and it certainly won’t be the last,” Enninful told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “It wasn’t an isolated incident.”

“Had I been younger I would have been so upset,” Enninful added. “I wouldn’t be able to say anything, but now I can talk about it. I’ve got the platform to speak about it and I don’t want this to happen to the next generation.”
This sort of thing should not be happening.
