If Trump loses we must not assume that it is back to the old politics

At the moment it looks like Trump is going to lose badly - in fact it is a possible blood bath, but I hardly dare hope for such an outcome.

Johnson is going to look very lonely in his populist tower and certainly behind the curve, with centre-ism once more in the ascendancy.

But what those of the centre must not do is assume that we can once more settle into the type of politics we had before the populists in the U.K. and USA took power with their promise of getting rid of elitism and giving the workers what they want. All a mirage if course, but never the less political parties must be absolutely clear that they ignore that section of the voting public at their peril because that is what got us Trump and Johnson and Brexit in the first place.

The Democrats seem to be saying the right things and undoubtedly the centre-ists in the Tory party and Labour are beginning to understand this. A Democratic win will boost the centre-ist cause in the U.K.

I can only hope that the forecast of a Democratic win is right.

Remember the forecasts last time they were spectacularly wrong on a Clinton win. One can only hope they are correct.

Think Trump knows he is the less popular which is why he is apparently trying to get the scientists to release untested vaccines for the general public!!! Can't think of anything complimentary to say about that man!!

Fingers crossed you are right WWM2, I hardly dare hope it is the case. I have a friend in Minnesota, which is a Democratic state, and she is convinced he will win a second term. He still has a lot of supporters and she says some people will vote for him but not admit it when polled because they think Biden is too old and unsuitable. Much like the fact that many people over here voted Conservative because they didn’t want Corbyn to be PM.

The problem for predictions ( well one of them) is their electoral college system. HC won 3m more of the popular votes. Therefore the only polls worth following are those in the swing states - and as has been said, they might hide ‘shy Tumpers’

suziewoozie Sat 17-Oct-20 15:49:13

Or Trumpers even ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 17-Oct-20 15:59:50

Yes I know suzi but I am hoping that this time around the polls have taken that into account.

I have also read that the Democrat lead is such that even taking such vagaries their lead is such that at the moment Trump doesn’t stand a snowballs chance in hell,

Mamardoit Sat 17-Oct-20 16:28:40

Well lots of people voted for Mrs T They shouted from the roof tops in 1979 but by 1987 they were not so vocal. She got in though. People don't tell the truth if they think others will judge them.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 17-Oct-20 17:19:55

12 points difference nationally.

Biden leads in 10 of the 11 swing states

GillT57 Sat 17-Oct-20 17:40:33

Oh I really really hope that Trump suffers a humiliating defeat and clears out of the White House taking his freeloading family with him. I don't think Biden is a particularily strong opponent though, and I do wonder why the Democrats couldn't field a stronger one. It is striking how ill educated a lot of the US electorate are on politics though; I know that we only see a selected vox pop, but when you see people genuinly afraid of a democratic win, whispering the word socialist as if it is satanism, and certain that if Trump loses then USA will end up like Venezuela, it is obvious that the old 'reds under the beds' fears of the McCarthy era are still there. There doesn't seem to be any comprehension that there is a middle ground.

It looks like Trump is going to struggle, but don’t write him off yet, if Biden does win don’t expect any great change in their relationship with UK or EU.

There are several areas of disagreement with the US these will remain whoever wins

varian Mon 19-Oct-20 18:19:13

I think if Biden wins, which I hope will happen, it will probably weaken the USA/UK relationship as Biden will be shrewd enough to prioritise a good relationship with the much large population bloc in the 27 countries of the European Union, rather than with a shrinking little isolated country run by the only remaining tinpot populist in the Western world.

WWM2 Sadly, just read this morning that Trumps has "roared back" (the article's wording) in Florida and has narrowed the gap in three more swing states. My stomach is in a constant roil these days. I cannot wait for this election to be over and hope and pray that this awful president is consigned to the dust heap of history.

I still think he will get a second term.
?

Urmstongran Why does that make you smile? Would you explain your reasons for wanting Trump to be there for another 4 years, please.

She only does it to annoy because she knows it teases (from Alice in Wonderland)
Urmston is perhaps playing Alice?

If true, it’s pathetic

I do not believe there is going to be any easy way of getting him out of the White House. He’s either going to win, or he’s going to lose and fight it strongly. I feel we are stuck with him for a good long time

I really don't think any of us, mostly UK Grannies, but interested in politics, can predict anything about this American election.

Callistemon Wed 21-Oct-20 18:42:48

I'm predicting nothing because I invariably get it wrong.

Although - if I say I'm sure Trump will get a second term, does that help?

I think everyone including most Americans can’t predict what is going to happen.
