Why? Now, I’m not in the habit of meeting bishops or arch bishops on a regular basis but I have met him and he is the loveliest person you could ever meet. Didn’t know that bishops etc were automatically offered peerages anyway but why the snub? Mind you, he probably wouldn’t want it anyway but that’s not the point. I suppose he’s upset someone at some point. Cummings perhaps.....

Perhaps he actually cares about people who are not rich. Maybe he made a tiny ctiticism of this Government.

Whereas the contribution to be made by Johnson’s brother .....

Jane10 Sun 18-Oct-20 13:03:56

Bercow too. Although he was desperately uncool about it.

And yet and yet Ian Botham....

I wonder why Richard Curtis has not had an honour for his work with Children in Need. Maybe he has turned it down.

I meant Comic Relief!

I suppose that lots and lots of people do good things to help others. Some are more high profile than others. It's often a matter of who you know...

RC has had the MBE and CBE.

Arch Bishops are automatically offered a seat in the Lords.
It is so wrong that Arch Bishop Sentamu was not given the
offer to take a seat

EllanVannin Sun 18-Oct-20 13:26:21

I'm not in favour of anyone being in the House of Lords. It's archaic and a waste of money. About time it was dropped.

Esspee Sun 18-Oct-20 13:33:55

I agree with EllanVallin wholeheartedly.

suziewoozie Sun 18-Oct-20 13:42:25

I agree as well with EV but whilst we’ve got it, we need people like JS to counterbalance so many others.

The government has broken with a tradition by not offering a peerage to John Semantu to reduce the numbers in the HoL it is said. Therefore, we will see if any future Archbishop will be offered one on retirement.
This peerage business is a farce.

Ilovecheese Sun 18-Oct-20 14:13:12

The Conservative David Davis has said this should be put right immediately

suziewoozie Sun 18-Oct-20 14:17:13

‘The government has broken with a tradition by not offering a peerage to John Semantu to reduce the numbers in the HoL it is said. ‘

Well ‘it’ is a damn liar isn’t ‘it’?

‘The government has broken with a tradition by not offering a peerage to John Semantu to reduce the numbers in the HoL it is said. ‘

What a load of piffle.

Whose decision was this?

allium Sun 18-Oct-20 14:52:15

If they give it to all the others why not this guy? Although think the House of Lords archaic rubbish best done away with ??

Whitewavemark2 Sun 18-Oct-20 15:16:37

Does the Queen not have a say in this as head of CoE etc?

Parsley3 Sun 18-Oct-20 16:50:19

Callistemon

^‘The government has broken with a tradition by not offering a peerage to John Semantu to reduce the numbers in the HoL it is said^. ‘

What a load of piffle.

Whose decision was this?

According to the Guardian, ‘a spokesman ‘ said the decision was to keep down the numbers. Not one of the new peerages was awarded to a non white recipient.

Callistemon Sun 18-Oct-20 16:52:50

Just what I said!
the decision was to keep down the numbers.
A load of piffle.

I am trying to be polite.

suziewoozie Sun 18-Oct-20 16:52:52

‘Not one of the new peerages was awarded to a non white recipient.’

Well well well

EllanVannin Sun 18-Oct-20 16:58:28

I don't care if it's the Pope, there's no place for this sort of palava in the 21st century !

suziewoozie Sun 18-Oct-20 17:02:58

But EV that’s not the point - the point is we have it and Downing Street as ever are lying about why JS wasn’t ennobled. He crossed DC - end of.

From the Yorkshire Post

Fully supportive of Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s furlough scheme, and financial help for businesses, he is, nevertheless, concerned by a breakdown of trust following the controversial trip that the PM’s senior aide Dominic Cummings made to Durham during the lockdown.

“What Yorkshire has taught me is people are generally on your side. But if you’re in leadership, respect always has to be earned. You can’t demand it of anybody,” he said. “If I was him (Cummings), I would have said sorry. And no regrets? That’s arrogance.”
