His statement:

My statement following the publication of the EHRC report:
“Antisemitism is absolutely abhorrent, wrong and responsible for some of humanity’s greatest crimes. As Leader of the Labour Party I was always determined to eliminate all forms of racism and root out the cancer of antisemitism. I have campaigned in support of Jewish people and communities my entire life and I will continue to do so.

“The EHRC’s report shows that when I became Labour leader in 2015, the Party’s processes for handling complaints were not fit for purpose. Reform was then stalled by an obstructive party bureaucracy. But from 2018, Jennie Formby and a new NEC that supported my leadership made substantial improvements, making it much easier and swifter to remove antisemites. My team acted to speed up, not hinder the process.

“Anyone claiming there is no antisemitism in the Labour Party is wrong. Of course there is, as there is throughout society, and sometimes it is voiced by people who think of themselves as on the left.

“Jewish members of our party and the wider community were right to expect us to deal with it, and I regret that it took longer to deliver that change than it should.
“One antisemite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media. That combination hurt Jewish people and must never be repeated.

“My sincere hope is that relations with Jewish communities can be rebuilt and those fears overcome. While I do not accept all of its findings, I trust its recommendations will be swiftly implemented to help move on from this period.”

I despair of a partythat could suspend a man who has never been and can never be accused of being anti-semitic. He has a right to his opinion and I do wonder why one of the findings in the report has not been made more public concluded factional hostility towards former leader Jeremy Corbyn amongst ex-senior officials contributed to "a litany of mistakes" that hindered the effective handling of antisemitism allegations
It is very difficult to be effective about something when there are people working aginst you in the organisation. There are others far more responsible for what happened who should be removed and legal action taken against them.

I wasnt sure Starmer would have it in him but apparently he does.

They just want him out. He was under attack while leader, and only the strength of grassroots support protected him.

All for a bloke that has more integrity than almost all other politicians combined.

He should probably retire. Once under no control of any organisation, he could go back to real protest without fear of the axe hanging over his head.

As a Labour Party member, I have gone on a long journey with regards to this issue.

I grew up from childhood as part of the LP family and always knew it as an open inclusive institution.

When this issue first broke, I simply couldn’t believe it as I have never ever (still havent) experienced anti-Semitic instances. However as time went on I simply couldn’t ignore the growing evidence and came to the conclusion about 2 years ago that it was too overwhelming to ignore.

Corbyn is responsible as leader and he should have offered his resignation regardless of any other issue.

Galaxy the problem is Starmer is likely to find himself leading a party with no members and no grassroots support. Which will be difficult.

Jeremy Corbyn has been suspended because:

"In light of comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour Party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. (A spokesman for the Labour Party said today).

Now Corbyn is no longer an issue I think the important thing is to build on Starmers start to changing the culture in the LP.

He is certainly proving himself as a strong leader, acting swiftly to suspend Corbyn after his remarks this morning.

Same old arguments of course, from both groups. I heard Corbyn's statement. Starmer had no choice but to suspend him as Corbyn continues to deny and minimise, in the face of an independent review.
I heard Angela Raynor interviewed on radio 4 lunch time. She was excellent imo.

It's a very dangerous time for him trisher I agree, I have been slightly worried that he didnt have the killer instinct so to speak but thankfully he has. I was particularly moved by his personal apology to Luciana Berger, her treatment made me utterly ashamed to be part of the labour party.

The claim that the scale of the problem was exaggerated has been picked up by the media – I’m hearing it on the BBC as I type this – and it will be interesting to see the accusers squirm as they try to justify their behaviour.
