Ham fisted Brexit

Dutch TV news has aired footage of customs officers confiscating ham sandwiches from drivers arriving by ferry from the UK under post-Brexit rules banning personal imports of meat and dairy products into the EU.

Officials wearing high-visibility jackets are shown explaining to startled car and lorry drivers at the Hook of Holland ferry terminal that since Brexit, “you are no longer allowed to bring certain foods to Europe, like meat, fruit, vegetables, fish, that kind of stuff.”

To a bemused driver with several sandwiches wrapped in tin foil who asked if he could maybe surrender the meat and keep just the bread, one customs officer replied: “No, everything will be confiscated. Welcome to Brexit, sir, I’m sorry.”

When you traveled to some other countries (non EU), pre Brexit, food was not allowed to be taken in. I believe it is the same rule coming to UK from some countries. It is what happens when you choose not to be in the club.

Always best to check before you travel, even if it's to a country you've been too before. Rules and regulations change even without Brexit.

Interesting that is is not U.K. Customs officials.
If this is the best petty EU bureaucracy can come up with I might be glad we have dissociated ourselves from them.

Sounds reasonable to me, there are many countries that don't allow food to be taken through customs. Not sure what point you're trying to make, or is this just another Brexit bashing thread?

Travelling round Australia with children many years ago we had all our fruit confiscated as we crossed from one state to another.

There has been plenty of warning about the likes of ham and cheese not being allowed to enter the EU

Why don't people read up about things?

They could have taken up to 20kg of fresh fish or lobster

Or Marmite

No idea why these people were unaware of the rules.

And of course once in France or wherever they could tuck into to something there

My sister, who runs a business and needs to import from Germany, says her suppliers in the EU appear to have to pay both EU and U.K. VAT, such is the confusion over the red tape.

Brexit? Wasn't that last year? Think we'll iron it all out in about five years whether we like it or not.

Dinahmo Mon 11-Jan-21 18:08:37

Of course it's Brexit bashing. We need to bash away as much as possible.

NotSpaghetti Mon 11-Jan-21 18:29:46

I also had fruit confiscated once. I was allowed it on the flight to America but not into the country.
We saw the notices at the gateway so sat and ate quite a lot of it! My young daughter found it quite funny that we could take it in to the country but "only if it's in our tummies".

In one. Yawn.
Time to get real.

You can't take any food stuffs at all into Australia, they confiscate all of it and fine you if you do it again. When crossing borders, you need to educate yourself on what you can and cannot do, ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jan-21 19:28:36

I think that goes for America too Chewbacca.
We are a third world entity now so we need to bone up on the new regulations.
We’ll get the hang of it.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jan-21 19:30:45

Actually it’s reported that the Dutch officials smirked (caught on camera) saying ‘welcome to your Brexit sir’.

Just what we need to inflame a situation.

MawBe Mon 11-Jan-21 20:13:15

It annoys people?

Don’t need Brexit to do that hmmhmm

Thank you Urmstongran. I thought the topic was nonsensical too.

My bloke once smuggled haggis into China. Bloody idiot. If he'd got caught... We had it for Christmas lunch.

vegansrock Mon 11-Jan-21 21:32:58

We are definitely becoming a “ third world country” urmstongran.
Yes it’s a petty issue since it hasn’t been any problem for years, But hey that’s what some people voted for.

vegansrock Mon 11-Jan-21 21:33:42

Let’s pretend it’s a huge benefit.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jan-21 22:00:01

No, let’s not vegansrock. It’s just the new way. We will get up to speed soon enough.
