26 arrests last night, flares being let off and general chaos in the West End. Only it didn't seem so long ago that she was asking people from England not to travel to Scotland.

They were discouraged from travelling but you can’t fix stupid.

In answer to the OP YES

Maybe those on a flight from Edinburgh, drunk and refusing to wear masks should have been turfed off the plane.

NICOLA STURGEON and Sadiq Khan have issued a joint plea calling for football fans without tickets not to travel to London for the England against Scotland match in the Euros.

TerriBull Sat 19-Jun-21 08:03:11

..........and definitely no social distancing or masks. I saw a tweet from Nicola congratulating the team on their nil nil draw, but no comment on the behaviour of the fans given that we are not out of the woods as far as this pandemic is concerned. She was quite vociferous in expressing a view a while back that she didn't want people from England travelling up to Scotland unnecessarily. I can't help thinking if loads of English fans turned up en masse and were behaving like this in the centre of Edinburgh and Glasgow she'd have something to say.

Hear, hear!
The behaviour of some groups of people both angers and saddens me. I think others have said here and elsewhere what I feel about football fans en masse so I won’t repeat it as it is too depressing but I am pretty sickened this morning.

Alegrias1 Sat 19-Jun-21 08:09:33

Should she? Well she did.

She told them not to travel. She told the to obey the rules. She told them to respect our hosts. She condemned the anti-English chants. They did none of those things. They're idiots. I'm ashamed of them.

She has focussed on results of the match and not given the idiots any more airtime. I think you're just trying to stir up trouble TerriBull.

TerriBull Sat 19-Jun-21 08:15:22

No I'm not Algerias, you can think that if you like, personally I have no time for football fans who behave like this I don't care where they come from, English fans have disgraced themselves many a time abroad.

She may well have asked those without tickets not to go, fat lot of notice they took and yes she has taken aim at the English per se many times over.

Alegrias1 Sat 19-Jun-21 08:25:45

Any comment then about the English fans chanting "We hate the Scots", starting a fight? I hope Boris Johnson will be condemning that. (Actually of course, I don't care if he does or not. They're idiots too.)

Are we complaining about football fans or Nicola? Or is it just a nice excuse to have another go at her?

Lin52 Sat 19-Jun-21 08:35:40

Yes, more should have been done by Sturgeon, and Khan, but her hypocrisy, stopping cruise ships from docking in Scotland, banning English people from Scotland because of the variants, yet letting 20.000, Scots descend on London, behaviour of drunken football fans, of any country, is deplorable, and time will tell if the London hotspot for the Delta variant will make its way to Scotland, guess that’ll be England’s fault though. Football is allowed to be king, to the detriment of the thousands of people who have been trying to keep safe, both here and in Scotland.

I sometimes think we live in a different Scotland from you Alegrias. The Scots fans' behaviour was execrable. This was entirely predictable and every effort should have been made to prevent their travelling.
So I'm complaining about Nicola who sat on a fence and barely bleated about the travelling fans and the fans themselves who behaved abominably.
All for a goalless draw which will somehow have transmuted to a marvellous victory up here.

LauraNorder Sat 19-Jun-21 09:03:48

Let’s not have a Scotland v England slanging match.
Let’s not confuse the majority of football fans, who enjoy the game with their family and friends with the rabble rousing yobs of all nations hell bent on causing mayhem.
I agree with Esspee, you can’t fix stupid.

As I have posted on the other football thread. The Euros should not have been held this year but as they are, then you will get crowds of ticketless supporters travelling to the venues. England v Scotland games have a long history and fans want to be there, with or without a ticket. Nicola Surgeon may just as well saved her breath. I love football, by the way.

I've posted already about the shocking behaviour of the visiting fans so I'm not going to comment again.

So let's go with Nicola and her mythical fence. She's told the fans repeatedly not to travel unless they have a ticket, and its been reported on all the news channels, but anyone who avoids her televised briefings because they are just "propaganda" would have missed that. I'm wondering how they could have been prevented from travelling. We've just had months of travel restrictions, so I guess we know how to do it. No trains from Scotland to London? No flights? Anybody who owns a See You Jimmy hat has to stay indoors for a month? Then this forum would have been full of people complaining about how heavy handed the measures were, how out of proportion.

And if you don't understand the significance of a team from a small country who hasn't been in a football competition for quarter of a century holding a team like England to a 0:0 draw, then we do live in a different Scotland. Maybe even on a different planet.

Did all the English fan at the match come from London or did a lot of them travel from different parts of England, just wondering.

Oldwoman70 Sat 19-Jun-21 09:55:48

Not a fan of football (or NS), but really the blame lies with those who travelled when they didn't have tickets (whether from Scotland or parts of England). The bad behaviour is solely the responsibility of the people involved. I don't see what NS, Khan or anyone else could have done - except maybe close borders, motorways and train stations and perhaps bring in the army!

Parsley3 Sat 19-Jun-21 10:25:01

She did. A controversial fan zone has been set up in a Glasgow Park to enable fans to gather to watch the games with some sort of control. However, since we still have free will nothing and nobody could stop people from travelling to London.

Callistemon Sat 19-Jun-21 11:08:34

Yes, under the current circumstances.

There are always those who spoil it for the majority.

Australia seems to have managed to stop people from travelling from one state to another.

NS is banning people travelling to Manchester from Scotland on Monday!

Maybe she thought the PM in London could control things in London without her help. If she could ban people from travelling to Scotland couldn't he do the same.

dragonfly46 Sat 19-Jun-21 11:37:24

Alegrias if she did not think she could stop the fans travelling to London how is she going to prevent Scots from travelling to Manchester on Monday?

May7 Sat 19-Jun-21 11:39:48

Alegrias1 See you Jimmy hat
love it grin

Scots have been banned from travelling to Manchester despite the fact that Manchester has a comparable level of Covid to that of Dundee. The non essential travel ban has been set out in the Health Protection Covid Restrictions Regulations. This is extremely baffling because although it’s the law how are people actually going to be prevented from going . Why did Nicola Sturgeon not put this law into force for the football fans ? Because she knows it’s too difficult enforce? Didn’t want to upset them ?
