How would you get MPs to focus on their jobs not sex?

Given there are currently 56 accusations of various assault by and against members of parliament, the Tories do seem to be leading the field in salacious revaluations. Today’s headlines highlight a Tory accused of using a date rape drug on 4 MPs, resulting in one waking up to find his nipples being licked! I know we are all waiting to see what diversionary tactics the PM will use to divert us from the Sue Grey report but this is a bit extreme! What remedies would you recommend to get MPs to focus on their job and not their own predilections! (No pun intended)

Unfortunately, with the current crop of self-serving, #mefirst, politicians I don't think you can stop them. They're only out for themselves, not to serve. No better natures to appeal to.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 22-May-22 08:51:44

It starts at the top.

Given Johnson’s history - no chance.

MawtheMerrier Sun 22-May-22 08:54:00

Wish I knew! Wish I understood the attraction they seem to have for some women too, I mean David Mellor? John Major? Bill Clinton? Boris?
It must be the pheromones exuded by power or else their high levels of testosterone are part of what drives a politician. (But still Jihn Major? confusedconfused )

DiamondLily Sun 22-May-22 09:09:15

I can't imagine how gruesome it must be to share a bed with Boris Johnson...?

OakDryad Sun 22-May-22 09:22:26

This from a 2004 article in The Independent:

In the First World War, frontline troops who were away from their loved ones for long periods famously had bromide put into their tea to reduce the distraction of their sexual drive. But yesterday it was suggested that such measures might be taken a lot further – to Mars, in fact.

Dr Rachel Armstrong, speaking yesterday at a British Interplanetary Society symposium on the Human Future and Space, said the US space agency NASA was considering how to deal with the natural urges of astronauts travelling on long journeys such as a three-year trip to Mars, where the six-strong crew would be likely to include two women.

OakDryad Maybe they should include sex with each other as part of their duties. It would solve that problem and keep them all happy.

I personally couldn’t care less how many affairs MP’s have ( unless they’re the minister for ‘don’t have affairs’ haha )
If it’s all consensual and over 18 who cares?
You can be squeaky clean and a crap MP.

Blossoming Sun 22-May-22 10:27:19

My first thought was castration but that seems a little harsh, so I’d go for banning alcohol from the premises and putting bromide in the tea/coffee.

Luckygirl3 Sun 22-May-22 10:28:54

I've got a very nice new set of secateurs.......

timetogo2016 Sun 22-May-22 10:29:55

Castration could be an option.

I agree - but we are not talking affairs here or consensual sexual activity - we are talking sexual harassment and, in at least one instance, a rape accusation. I do mind if our elected representatives are engaging in this sort of behaviour.

Blossoming Sun 22-May-22 10:31:22

Kandinsky it’s not the affairs per se. What they do in their own time and away from their offices is up to them, Snogging in the corridors of power and according their lovers preferential treatment is a different matter.

Kandinsky Sun 22-May-22 10:32:01

Yes of course - that’s different.

Do you really mean that Kandinsky? I think if people behave incontinently in their private lives it’s a certainty that they do in their public lives too.

Kandinsky Sun 22-May-22 10:32:52

That reply was to the above 2 posts.

No not at all.
The best heart surgeon in the world can be having an affair but he’s still a brilliant surgeon.
I have friends who are married to police officers - nearly all of them are having ( or have had ) affairs. Same as when I worked in banking/ offices.
It’s human nature. It doesn’t mean you’re bad at your job.

Kandinsky Sun 22-May-22 10:38:50

Teaching is also pretty bad for affairs ( again, from personal experience )

So basically - anywhere where you get lots of people working together.
It will never stop.

OakDryad Sun 22-May-22 10:39:50

It is a matter of concern what public servants are doing outside as well as inside Parliament as it goes to trust and security. Profumo? Thorpe?

Agree, so many public servants are not squeeky clean... Are you including all the current Women MP's as well?

MaizieD Sun 22-May-22 10:50:59

We're not, in general, talking about 'affairs' here, are we? Those are consensual.

We're talking about sexual harassment, rape, and, in the latest case, drugging people for non consensual sex. This is abuse of power and downright nastiness.

Off with their balls...

Kandinsky Sun 22-May-22 10:53:10

Jeremy Thorpe was having extra marital gay sex in less enlightened times. They booted him out purely for the embarrassment factor.

Profumo - wasn’t that the 60’s?
Literally decades ago.

MaizieD Sun 22-May-22 11:02:22

Jeremy Thorpe was booted out for plotting to have his 'lover' killed.

Profumo was sleeping with a girl who was also sleeping with with a Soviet attache, which could have posed a security risk.

OakDryad Sun 22-May-22 11:04:15

You miss my point Kandinsky. Profumo's affair was a matter of national security because Keeler was also involved with Soviet Yevgeny Ivanov. Thorpe's affair involved a murder plot to try to get rid of his discarded lover Scott. These events may be long ago but do you not understand how Parliament works? Very little escapes the whips about what MPS do inside and outside of Parliament and their peccadillos are used to control divisions. Successive whips will likely have know about the behaviour of the Tory MP arrested last week long before it ever became public knowledge.

I was just going on the thread title which is asking how to get MP’s to focus on their job not sex. I didn’t read the full opening post.
The thread title is very misleading.

Anyway,
Off to enjoy the sun. ☀️
Have a lovely day smile
