A much needed celebration

Today Burford came together to celebrate Levellers Day. They marched, sang and listened to accounts of protest and activism.

Isn't a pity we don't celebrate the lives of people who fought for our democracy much more.

Very interesting article Glorianny. To my shame I didn't know much at all about the Levellers.

Thank you for sharing that.

Yes, we should celebrate good decent people more than we do.

It's funny isn't it volver that history in schools includes wars, battles, monarchs, and much stuff which really doesn't matter, and so little about the ways and the people who fought for freedom. Particularly the civil war stuff when we got rid of the monarchy and had a Commonwealth. You'd almost think it was deliberate and they didn't want you getting ideas.
I must admit I hadn't heard of the Levellers until the 90s when there was a band by that name my children liked. They were sort of folk-rock and sang political songs like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai65solIkIY and I wondered where the name had come from.

In my dreams this is what is meant by 'levelling up'.

It's easy to make glamorous romantic epics about battles and heroics . Plain obscure poor people who are the mainstay of democracy are not usually good material for local merrymaking once a year when the town celebrates itself.

One way to accomplish the celebration of ordinary decent people is to pick one of them out and make a hero of him or her.

I agree so much has been lost - the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the Jarrow Crusade to name just two movements everyone should know and honour. I, too, hadn't heard of the Levellers so thanks for posting Glorianny.

I’m pretty sure I learnt about the Levellers in school. I guess it was school, at any rate, because I can’t remember not knowing about them. There the folk band The Levellers and there used to be a magazine called the Leveller, which I remember buying at our newsagents.

I’m kind of surprised they’ve dropped out of memory, really, but it’s good to see them commemorated. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Leveller

How Lovely, Glorianna. So wonderful that some memories who fought such long and painful battles for us (the 'little people') are kept.
(Must admit did not go into this thread, as I was assuming it was about the up and coming 'celebrations' of having our unequal, forehead tugging, hat doffing, kneeling and curtyseing to unelected head of state!!)

I am so looking forward to going to the 2022 Tolpuddle celebrations in July. Been cancelled for the past two years and I have so missed it

Not just a lovely celebration of the past.

From the article :

"The theme at this year’s event was defending democracy and protest, as it took place amid a raft of authoritarian legislation from the Tories, including the new Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Act, the Elections Act, legislation to counter state threats — including an overhaul of the Official Secrets Act — and a Boundary Commission review of how Westminster constituencies are defined."

Oh I never thought of that! I'm trying so hard to ignore all THAT stuff, and it seems to be working!
